But Montreal is a different story. The province of Quebec has the status of 'distinct society' and i do understand why many french-speaking Quebecers may want to separate from Canada one day and form their own country. Actually, i once read a poll which showed that a majority of french-speaking Quebecers felt a closer allegiance to France than they did to Canada. But that's another story. Quebec is a distinct society and unlike any other Canadian province. The large majority of french-canadians live in Quebec and make up 90% of its population. What i'm saying is that Claude Giroux (born in Ontario) belongs on the habs more than Torrey Mitchell (born near Montreal) does. It's a french thing, not a province thing.

Finally someone that realize that we should use our uniqueness in america to load our team with French player! It's not political, it's a french thing! So true!

Cheers,

I know enough about the issues and feelings of Les Québécois. We're still only talking about a hockey team, not an assault on French identity. I don't need Bobby Orr or David Ortiz or Tom Brady or Bill Russell to be a statement of who I am any more than they need that from the fans. Pick players to win, not because you're having an identity issue/crisis. If any nationality needs an "ethnically pure" (I guess that's what you call it) sports team to justify themselves it's a sad statement on their self-esteem and fragility.

I watched parts of last night's game and concluded that once again, the habs were lucky to win that game. Even pro-habs pundits alluded to the same thing. The should have lost to Toronto were it not for Carey Price's heroics. Same story against Vancouver. They got destroyed by Columbus with Price resting. And last night, Price did play but did allow 4 goals. Had it been Al Montoya between the pipes, Philly would likely have scored 10 goals.

Every year over the past 4-5 years it's been the same story: Carey Price, the one-man team. And then when he gets injured, the team loses its focus and chokes. You simply can't get badly outplayed on a regular basis and expect to win consistently. There'll come a day when Carey Price will get older and his skills will erode. You won't be able to count on Carey Price to save your bacon game after game.

All true. As a Habs fan I agree. That said, New Jersey won 2 cup with just an all star goalie (Brodeur) and 1 all star defencer (Neidermeyer). The rest of the team were grinders. ;)

True. But that was like 15 years ago. Hockey's changed since then.

p.s. Plus they had one of the top playoff performers of all-time, Claude Lemieux. There are no Claude Lemieux's on today's habs team.

OK, lets have a hockey pool. 10 participants - winner takes all. Everybody who wants to participate puts in a $100. We draft players. Everybody can draft any player (russian, swedish, finnish, french or english speaking) who is on a current NHL roster. Jalimon can only pick from a list of (remaining) French speaking only NHL, CHL, AHL players.

Still wanna play?

Your logic may be honorable for Quebec but do you think that this team will have success?

If Jalimon had exclusive first call on all French players he would have a very tough team, but picking only French players available according the balanced NHL rules it will end up like being the victims of a yearly slaughter fest. He'll have the same honor of going down like the 300 Spartans at Thermopylae.

Haven't you already sent your message?

I don't need to send a message, WE as a group need to send a message. Remember, HABS profit, go into a NHL profit sharing pool. So every time you spend money on the HABS, an American team, and Gerry Betteman makes money. When he sees that money pool drying up.... they will learn right quick to give better to better players to Canada.

This is sort of true, all the pundits, have said that the habs, are basically gone from shit to mediocre.

I just watched an interview with Alex Radulov on CBC. I was surprised at how fluent he is with the english language, although i'm quite aware he did live in Nashville a few years ago.

Radulov was a good pick-up by the habs. He has been a good-luck charm for Alex Galchenyuk. But he only has two goals and will need to score more if he wants that big contract for next season or so.

I was weary his off-ice problems may come back, but he's now married with a young child so his party life may be a thing of the past. His wife is beautiful, by the way.

What "group"? Five or six guys from an obscure hooker board? Do you really think anyone will notice if the five or six guys here stop going to the games? And of the guys who hang around on the merb sports section, one is from Toronto, another from Boston, a third from Connecticut, and another guy who's usually out west. I'm from Montreal, but I never go to the games anyway. That pretty much just leaves you.

Maybe a boycott of the "Chez Paree" stripclub. They advertise on Montreal's TSN radio station, which is dedicated to talking about the habs during the hockey season. :D

Hello merbies,
I have been reading this board for a while and this thread and the NHL in particular, I think I have an open mind and am not a completly deluted homer, even if I do live in this city and have been a fan of les Habitants for close to fifty years, but even if this a Montreal board, I still find more negative comments than positive about the Habs.
I read so many posts on how great the Leafs or the Rangers, Jets, etc, are doing, yet the Montreal Canadiens are leading the NHL as I write this....
Maybe it's because mainly out of towners contribute in this board, still I don't think there is a Habs thread on TERB.
Can someone explain this phenomenon to me?

tiga, i've went over this thread and i've concluded that it's mostly habs fans saying negative things about the habs.

Look behind you.
The Habs could win 30 games straight and once they lose three in a row the media and fans would be all over them. Tough city to play sports in.

I think if you are #1 in February you will be in the playoffs, if you get bumped out first round being #1 it sucks but that is sports. Look at all the sure picks on any sport, upsets galore. It is only a game.

Great leadership, high skill and motivation, building a team with chemistry is not affected by a boycott. In any sport teams who can't sell tickets don't suddenly or eventually find all the necessary qualities that make championships. No boycott is going to make one of the 3 best teams in the NHL into a champion caliber team if they aren't already....and it sure won't affect who wins the Cup!

I totally agree with STN. That's the business of sports. It's only a game, but many people forget that it's a business first. Were there no money to be made in pro sports, there would be no NHL, no NBA, no NFL, etc.
