There is a French language thread about this interview with the well-known indy, Amélie Gray. But I think that there will be enough interest in this interview among English speakers that I am providing a good translation and starting an English language discussion about it.

Thanks to Amélie for doing this interview. It's interesting and enlightening.

Interview with an Escort, Part I

The world of prostitution is often misunderstood by the general public and misrepresented by the media. But who better than a professional to talk about it? Amelie Grey has agreed to grant an exclusive interview to Double Dose. As an independent girl, her daily life seems far removed from the image of the prostitute who has succumbed to drugs and become addicted to them.

First, is there a difference between a whore, a prostitute and an escort?

No, there is none. It's like saying "pussy" and "vagina". In Montreal, the figure of the street prostitute does not exist. In 2015, if you want an escort you find her on the Internet. Then, to use different terms, let’s say say that you start out as a prostitute, then you become an escort and finally a courtesan. The use of different terminology is more a matter of salesmanship than anything else.

Before doing what you’re doing today, what job did you have?

I worked in the video game industry where I was making less than $ 30,000 per year for an average of 60 hours of work per week. This is when I experienced my first episode of burnout. I moved to another video game company, where I worked for 8 months. At that time, I was in a polyamorous relationship with my ex-fiancé and the first woman with whom I had fallen in love. They left me but stayed together at the time when I began this other job and that's where I experienced my second episode of burnout.

After this second burnout experience, I became a Quality Assurance manager for another company. I was trapped in a vicious circle, going six months without working and piling up debts. Whenever I went back to working, it was for a better paying job, but also more stressful. The problem was not my skills, but my mental condition; I had no time to really rest.

And that is when you turned to prostitution?

Yes, I have always made a joke saying that in life I was good at two things: rolling joints and give blowjobs. It stayed in my mind as a joke, but, at some point, when you find yourself living at your mother’s home and being
$ 50,000 in debt, you begin to think seriously about this possibility.

I honestly do not think that there are girls who decide to be an escort for reasons other than financial need. Later you can realize that the job has a lot of things that you love about it and that you had misconceptions about the industry, but you do not start for other reasons than financial reasons. This is a very difficult barrier to cross, but once you pass it, you realize that it is not so terrible.

The idea of getting paid (for sex) is difficult. There is also an issue of self-esteem that goes with it.

How did you get started in the beginning?

I did not know anyone in the business. I did my research on the Internet. I found MERB: the Montreal Escort Review Board. Moreover, it is on this site that I am considered one of the best escorts in town.

How have your friends and family viewed your change in profession?

My mother knew about it from the beginning. She was open-minded and just told me to protect myself and be safe. Moreover, she saw how I blossomed thereafter. For my father, it was more difficult because I unconciously kept my distance from him. After letting him know about it, he accepted my profession. There are also advantages; I can afford to take him to hockey games or on a vacation.

As for my friends, I made a great discovery: people who love you, really love you. Some of them took it badly, but I did not count them as real friends. Initially I took it it badly that some of my acquaintances were trying to sleep with me after learning my profession. Now I tell them it is $ 250 / hour.

Have you had a boyfriend while you were an escort?

I had a boyfriend, it lasted for a year. Basically, he was a customer, which I really did not think would happen. We met at the party of a mutual friend, but he was already one of my regulars. I told him that if he crossed this line, he would no longer have the right to book me. He continued to make appointments with other girls and that created problems: he booked the girls in my agency, some of whom are my friends. He was talking about me to other girls who, when I met them the first time, they told me: "Hey I slept with your boyfriend! " It became a little weird. He then started dating one of the girls in my group.

I’ve been single for a year. I often deal with strange forms of rejection. If I say what I do in life, a guy rejects me, while wanting to fuck me anyway. It's like, "you're disgusting, but I must try." Suddenly anything I had to say and that made me interesting wasn’t relevant. And also whether I wanted or not I already experience a lot of sex in my life, so the need is not really there.

Now if I have sex, it’s either for money or because I have real feelings for someone. But to be honest, I would really like to meet someone and be part of a couple. I'm proud of what I do and I can not be with someone who finds it disgusting. But it can happen--my partner has a boyfriend.

Bump. Thanks for the translation.

Interesting article, moreso the photos of the coffee table... But for anyone curious about the other end of the hobby, haven't books like the Mayflower Madam and Secret Diary of a Call Girl covered this subject already extensively? Same old content keeps getting recycled and "re-discovered." I'm bored. :p

Wait so my actual life story is boring repeated shit to you? Alright...
Im trying to show my true face, imperfections and coffee table included.
The sad fact is people still think of this profession in stereotypes and its up to us to show it differently.

Granted, it's not the first time that an escort has outed herself to the world, but it's still very unusual for a girl to reveal herself in the manner that Amélie has.

Also, remember that the intended audience is not those of us who are already familiar with the world of escorts. We don't really learn much from an interview like this one. But as the first sentence states: "The world of prostitution is often misunderstood by the general public and misrepresented by the media." In her own small way, Amélie is bravely fighting against the prejudices and misconceptions of the general public and the media towards prostitutes and their clients. I think that when an escort does something like this, we should take note of it and applaud her for doing so.

Just let it roll off of you, Amelie. There will always be critics and there is nothing you can do about it. Thank you for putting yourself out there!

Sorry sorry sorry Amelie. That came out wrong. If that was the way you read my post, it wasn't my intention at all to say your life story is boring. It was more about the point / purpose of the article. Maybe Canada is very sensitive to this now, with C-36, so the public is thirsty for this 'new' knowledge. But Americans and Brits have been living with the threat of LE over us forever. Articles and books numerous have been written on the subject. But the public will be the public. The average is the average. You're not going to change what they think. Abortion vs pro-life, Republicans vs Democrats. This is not a novel argument or moral. That was my point.

As for revealing your identity, that's your choice. Though, I'm not quite sure how that enhances the story. It would've made its point just as well, if you stayed anonymous, i.e. blurred your face.

That's your own choice, for the notoriety or martyrdom. I personally don't find value in that, and I prefer SPs who would want to keep themselves anonymous. To be frank, why would you want to be an SP forever, and carry this public baggage with you? But that's my opinion, and my opinion only, shining white knights come spear me... and likely another topic for another thread...

My face is on my website...
I never said showing my face was the point here, I said the REAL me... but I wouldnt expect you to the know the difference.

Fact is, a friend asked me if he could interview me and I agreed... nothing more, nothing less.
I'm not trying to change the world, I just wanted to answer his questions honestly without embelishment.
If he felt like writing this article it is his prerogative.

Also I'm perfectly able to be my own shining white knight...
I consider this my career and I have no intention of leaving any time soon, people I care about already know this.
Not every girl can say the same, and therefore not every girl can answer questions openly, I just wanted to do my part for our community, SPs, and clients.

From a girls perspective thank you for sharing. I've tried dating while working and its extremely difficult. I've also tried coming out to friends with good and bad results. I've also felt myself grow distant from my family in trying to hide what I earn and wanting to avoid financial talks with them. I do wish I had the courage to tell them as you did.
It was clear your answers were well thought out and you clarified what the real hardest parts of escorting really is, which is living with the stigma in relation to love, family and frienship. ( all without sounding cheesy like I am now lol )
I've taken a course on sex work and society and your answers were well thought out and very on point. I really enjoyed it.

Hi Jade, it's true that it must be difficult to have a boyfriend while doing this job. Personally even if I am in this hobby and have meet a few very intelligent and fun girl in the past two years that if met in other place I would definitely want as a girlfriend. I don't think I could be in a relation with an sp, I might not be open minded enough. I hope I'll have the chance to meet you again soon I had a great time speaking with you at the last party can't wait to do it again.

For my self I first started in this hobby after seeing the interview that Lorence Venne and Marylie Savoie made in 2013 (I think) it really change my perception on the escorting. After my divorced I really wanted to see Lorence, that I found really attractive and intelligent and I wanted to see how it really was and I had a really good experience and that's what started me in this hobby.

I don't know if I am lucky but in this hobby 90% of the girls I have met where really bright and intelligent that's make it difficult to stop. So thanks to all the fine lady's I have me in the last two year. Now I will have to see Amelie in the futur.

Same here Christ2121, 100% of the women I have met are strong, intelligent independent women

Really great & honest interview Amélie, I look forward to reading the second part.
I love the picture of the coffee table it almost shows just as much of who you are (in a good way) as the article.

And thank you for the translation CaptRenault

Thank you for providing your honest perspective Amélie. It is a real antidote to the kind of thinking that spurred the new legislation, but without sugar-coating.

I must say that is a very nice apartment. Reminds me of mine when I lived in Montreal. The hardwood floors and those windows. Sigh.

But those cigarettes. Yikes!

Amelie's situation is very common with SPs. She is just very honest and open about it. From the article Amelie knows where she and everyone stands.

And for that if I get to ever meet her she better allow me to cover her from head to toe with peanut butter while she donkey punches me.

Great article. I had the opportunity to meet Amelie at the MTLGFE GT last year, and heard in person parts of her life story depicted in this interview. She's definitely quite intelligent and personable.
