From an other thread :

I LOL every time i see the term hobbying being used, i guess at times i have probably used it although not often. It is a way of sugar coating what we are really doing and that is paying for sex with a bunch of young ladies that we would have no shot with in the real world. No one in there right mind could think that this is a hobby.

I am not an english specialist but the wikipedia definition of the word hobby seems neutral :

« An activity done regularly in one's leisure time for pleasure. »

Three elements in the definition :

1 in one’s leisure time. That is clearly the case when seeing sex workers ;

2 done regularly. There is space for interpretation here but obviously the more you do it the more the activity is important in your leisure time ;

3 for pleasure. That is the tricky part. Sex is for pleasure indeed. But it fulfills a physical and psychological need. The first time I saw a MP, I must admit it was to fulfill a need more than to the simple pleasure. I was out of a separation and had not had a physical contact with a woman for three mounths. It was a great experience and it took pressure off for a while. To be honest, it was more a necessity than a pleasure seeking hobby. That experience apart, almost every time I saw a sex worker was solely for the pleasure and to get rid of the complexity of meeting girls only for sex.

JJ, in the last 7 years I had sex with sex workers, more with fuck friends and a few with women I fell in love with. Seeing sex workers is certainly a hobby for me, just like meeting friends I made through this hobby.

I get what Jeff Jones is saying, and actually the first time i heard the word hobby used in association with the sex biz, i :confused: and lol as well. Same goes for "SP"..... I recently heard a ad on the radio for a pc company and they mentioned a service provider in the ad and i sarcastically was thinking "Great, where does she work?!" :lol: (she had an awfully weird name for a SP also) :D

I guess this is really a "hobby" per se, but not in the usual sense of the word. It is a word used to justify the actions of what the reality of this business is more than anything, but to each his own. If you wanna call it a "real hobby" then do so. With that, Happy Hobbying!

I agree with gugu. For me this is definately a legit hobby. I have no problem saying outloud I pay money for sex with prostitutes. I have no hidden shame or embarrassment about that. Most men with any money do this. Handsome movie stars and sports figures, powerful political and business figures mostly do this at times. They can get almost any girl they want in a traditional fashion. The lack of hassles, openness and skillset of seeing SPs can be really appealing. In the real world, between men and women, a subtler but not all that different money for services arrangement goes on everywhere. In marriages and relationships of all types. AND IT'S A LOT MORE EXPENSIVE!

Some guys like to take it a step further and see SPs as an actual hobby, as per the definition in gugu's post. It spreads a lot wider than the actual sex. I not only enjoy seeing the girls, but like to research them, I like trying to pick out the good ones, look far and wide for gems, rank a TDL in my mind, try out different styles and discover new tastes (older, young, heavier, smaller, different looks and ethnicities, more sensual, more PSE etc.). The actual sessions are just a single aspect of the hobby as I see it. It's almost like collecting hockey cards. It's really fun, to go over everyone's stats and know everything about each player. and have favorites, and try to get that prized rookie card etc. Then comes the experience itself, the tasting, the savouring, the feeling, the enjoying, the development of preferences and tastes. Like a wine connoisseur. It's not masking the hobby as a reason to get drunk. It's a legit pastime, that brings fun and enjoyment.

You only live once folks. Sex and women (or men) is one of the great enjoyments in life. IMO, it's a waste to only experience one or two women in a lifetime. As we know, the vast majority of those that get married young and stick with one partner, have fun for a few years and then the joy and excitement of sex dies down forever. The hobby of following and frequenting prostitutes keeps this great pleasure alive and well forever. It also does so with minimal hassle, minimal problems, minimal hurt feelings and really minimal cost if you think about how expensive and time consuming it would be, in real life, to try to be a playboy and bed women Casanova style.

I also agree with gugu. The Urban Dictionary has several variations of the definition of hobbyist (http://www.urbandictionary.com/define.php?term=hobbyist), which basically say the same thing:

1. Hobbyist
Someone who has a hobby of visiting with most (or all) of the local escorts in a given city or local. Quite akin to a gambling addiction in terms of amount of money spent.

2. Hobbyist
An active customer of prostitutes and escorts who shares information with similar customers, typically on some type of online forum.

3. Hobbyist
A man who patronizes prostitutes.

4. Hobbyist
Someone who has a hobby, regardless of what the hobby may be; takes it way too seriously by spending too much money and time on it, and makes fun of newbies

I see it more as therapy :rolleyes:

Examples:

Suffering from stress of the modern life? => SP therapy

Have you been unlucky with the girls for 3 weeks in a row and feeling your morale low? => SP therapy

Wants to punch the face of you boss for giving that promotion to that ass kisser? => SP therapy

You wife cheated you with your best friend, your business partner stole money from you, your son is in jail from trafficking heroine? => SP therapy at least 3 times a week! :D

Other Languages

Interesting test would be examining how the phrase and derivatives translates into other languages.

Hobby = passe-temps ou loisirs

Hobbyist = ?

Hobbying = ?

We can easily translate hobbyist by the following French word: amateur.
We could also use the term « passioné » to convey the same meaning.

The Spanish term aficionado can also be used as an equivalent term.

Hobbying: I would suggest the following verb: se détendre. Here it's funny because if your hobby is sex with SPs than in order to « se détendre » you need to tendre (i.e. bander)something.

How do you stop the hobby? Or at least slow down? What does it take ? Run out of money or run out of sperm? I don't think its a hobby anymore more like an addiction! Just this past week I've seen 8 escorts, 1 every day & 2 on Wednesday morning & evening ( I coulnd't come anymore that night) next day I had to see my ATF just to make sure I was alright & everything was working properly. I think its an addiction because I can't stop. maybe if I get a heartattack or if I left Montreal, its just too easy here. Sex is constantly on my mind, is that normal? Ask any SP.

Hobbies become an addiction for many people who spend all their time and money on it, just like Block's hit man John Keller spending all his hard earned money on stamps.

BTW, I think the word hobby is accepted in french with the same meaning as in english.

I think 8 a week is too much Dreamer. If you are doing this most weeks, then maybe your hobby has crossed that line to addiction. You have to be careful with this hobby. A general rule of thumb about addiction is do you suffer significant negative consequences in other aspects of your life because of the hobby? If yes and you still keep doing what you are doing, then there is a problem.

For me it's not a hobby, the same way a devout man would not consider going to church a hobby. You make a donation and they give your soul a good buff and shine and then you’re all at peace with the world.

Etymology speaking "hobby" derives from the term "hobyn" which in turn designates a "pony or a small horse" and by extension a child's toy riding horse. From this last meaning (toy riding horse) - which appeared in the mid XVIth century - we can derive the modern notion of "hobby", i.e. "an activity that doesn't go anywhere" (like riding a child's toy horse = you remain restless, you mimicking riding a real horse).

Here's a quotation from Wikipedia:

Hobbies are practiced for interest and enjoyment, rather than financial reward. Examples include collecting, creative and artistic pursuits, making, tinkering, sports and adult education. Engaging in a hobby can lead to acquiring substantial skill, knowledge and experience. However, personal fulfillment is the aim.

If we accept this definition then it is debatable if seeing escorts or having sex with SP can really be a hobby becauseit's an open question to determine how that activity can lead to the acquisition of substantial skill, knowledge or experience. What skills can we gain from hobbying? To be a better lover? To learn new sexual techniques? What kind of knowledge can we get from this activity? To know who are the reliable bookers/pimps in Montreal? The best agencies? The best forum? To know who are the most reliable posters? (there's a thread in this forum devoted to this matter).
And finally, what kind of experience do you acquire while hobbying? To know more about women? To know more about yourself?

All thing considered I can conclude - bona fide - that seeing escorts is probably not a hobby because the things (knowledge, experience, skills) you can acquired from that are mere trifle, a waste of time and money (but it is fun however...)

It qualify as a hobby as long it is fun and ,as for any activities,doesn't take more energy ,time and money that you can afford...if it affects the way you function in your everyday life, including but not only your work , it is not healthy anymore and one should take a pause and reconsider ...My take on life and any activity is to aim at a balance...anything that takes over is too much,be it food,alcool,work or sex...

Protagoras,

« Loisir » the french equivalent, comes from latin licere (that is permited) and its meaning before the 18 century was close to freedom and “oisiveté”, idle. Its sense evolved to « distraction», entertainment. (from wiki)

Of course the answer to the question largely depends on the definition we use.

Maybe acquiring some level of knowledge, experience and skill is what differentiate a hobby from simple entertainment. If so, for example, going to cinema may be a hobby if you consider it as an art and it if you make the effort of developing a reflection or knowledge about it. It would be simple entertainment if all you do is go there to passively feel the sensation it provides. Same for travelling. Visiting only all included and hanging around the beach would be entertaining while visiting the countries to get in contact with their culture would be a hobby. But then, the difference is largely normative, just like considering what you get from hobbying, or bowling, as mere trifle.

I've changed my mind. Although I certainly don't consider seeing escorts a Hobby, once we start discussing and exchanging reviews then its true that the whole thing is more like a serious hobby. So I guess I am a hobbit!

Anybody who wants to believe that this is a hobby then all the power to you, i certainly won't be able to change your mind if you are able to sugarcoat things to the extent that you really believe that. However there is nothing wrong with sex for money as long as it is between two consenting adults but i choose to see it for what it is and unlike the rest of you lucky hobbyists i am justajohn:)

Hello all

That's a pretty good and accurate view. A hobby is something that creates a passion and brings enjoyment without interfering with the real needs and goals in life.

I'm not sure what the name of what we are doing matters much anyway. "Hobby" is just a feel good euphemism. LilyForYou pointed to the complications. If this activity is just for fun then it's a "hobby". When it becomes too diversionary or absorbing and problematic, as it has for so many, then it's a problem.

And I would like to add that "too much" is really personnal,one's normality is another one excess...if you have the means and energy to meet 8 times a week:good for you ,I just envy your stamina ...and wallet loll ...if not you passed the line and are not in hobbyland anymore...
