TAMPA — If George Steinbrenner were alive and still running the Yankees, they’d be looking for new trainers and team doctors -- even after a bunch of them were fired last winter.

You can almost hear Steinbrenner bellowing: “Can anyone diagnose a (bleeping) injury around here?”

Three of the Yankees biggest -- and highest-paid stars -- outfielder Aaron Judge and pitchers James Paxton and Luis Severino have been sidelined in spring training with injuries they suffered last season.

Doctor J could’ve kept the Yankees healthier.

Judge, the latest star sidelined in this massive screwup, has a stress fracture to his first right rib that he suffered while diving for a ball in September. The Yankees will reassess Judge after two weeks, they said Friday -- as if Judge, after failing to heal over the past six months will miraculous mend in two weeks. Opening Day is less than three weeks away.

And think about what we just said: Judge had a broken bone in his body and Yankees doctors couldn’t find it -- even after Judge told team trainers he heard a “crack” and a “pop" last Sept. 18, when he tried to rob the Angels’ Albert Pujols of a single.

Give the Yankees credit for making Judge get an MRI, which revealed no damage.

But remember: He heard a “crack" and a "pop.”

I wonder When Judge will be back in the Everyday Lineup?

He is supposed to get another CT scan in 2 weeks because the last one showed his rib is healing. If he does not need surgery probably mid April, if he needs surgery probably mid June

BTW the Yankees medical and strength and training staff from last season was dismissed at the end of the year. It does seem like some of these injuries should have been more pro-actively dealt with at the end of last season, notably Severino's and Judge's injuries.

Major League Baseball announced Thursday it was suspending spring training and that the start of the regular season would be delayed by at least two weeks because of the coronavirus pandemic.

The Red Sox sent a statement regarding the decision and also provided information for fans who have purchased tickets.

“The health and safety of our fans, players, and employees is of paramount importance. We thank them for their patience and support during this unprecedented time. We support Major League Baseball’s decision to suspend Spring Training games and to delay the start of the 2020 regular season. Effective immediately, all Fenway Park and JetBlue Park tours and events are suspended until further notice. We hope our fans and everyone across the country remain safe as we all work together through this challenging time,” the statement said.

Spring training season ticket holders will receive a credit for unplayed games that can be used for next year’s spring training

Fans who purchased individual game tickets directly from the team via phone or online will be issued a refund to the account used for purchase....

Major League Baseball, like many sports leagues around the world, has been shut down indefinitely because of the growing threat that is the novel coronavirus (COVID-19). Spring Training has been suspended and Opening Day will be pushed back at least two weeks, though that remains subject to change.
On Friday, MLB and the MLBPA informed teams that players have three options during the shutdown: stay at their team's spring training facility, return to their offseason homes, or return to their team's home city. For many players, returning home means going to Arizona. Fifteen teams hold spring training in Phoenix and many players put down permanent roots in the area.
To help pass the time during the shutdown, Cincinnati Reds pitchers Trevor Bauer and David Carpenter are organizing a sandlot-style baseball game in Phoenix. Carpenter reached out to Bauer on Twitter and that got the ball rolling....

No date, time, or location has been announced, possibly because MLB and the MLBPA may try to shut the game down, but Bauer says the sandlot game is happening. It will be broadcast on his website, Momentum, and everyone will wear microphones during the game as well. Bauer said being mic'ed up is "mandatory." That's always fun, and players will presumably be unfiltered now......

MLB teams and players are stepping up to assist stadium employees that are not able to work during the season's delay.

The league announced on Thursday that the remaining Spring Training games were canceled and the start of the regular season is delayed at least two weeks due to the coronavirus outbreak. The move came alongside suspensions and cancelations among all major sports.

In the face of the pandemic, teams and athletes have pledged money to help compensate the non-salaried employees that will not be able to earn a paycheck during the delays. Mavericks owner Mark Cuban was the first to say he would help, and the Cavaliers' Kevin Love soon followed with a $100,000 donation.

MLB teams and players have joined the NBA in the initiative. Here's a look at how they're helping to compensate arena employees:

Astros: Houston outfielder George Springer is donating $100,000 to employees at Minute Maid Park who have been impacted by game cancelations, according to Fox 26's Mark Berman. Third baseman Alex Bregman is also donating 1,000 quarantine food kits to children in Houston. Each kit provides 28 free lunches per student.

Reds: Cincinnati pitcher Trevor Bauer started a fundraiser to assist game day staff with a goal of $1 million. He is also organizing a "sandlot"-style pickup game in Arizona with MLB and MiLB players to provide an escape for fans.

Tigers: Ilitch Holdings announced on Friday that Detroit is setting up a $1 million fund to cover a month's wages for part-time and event staff, including those impacted by the canceled Spring Training games.

A New York Yankees minor league player has tested positive for coronavirus, becoming the first known baseball player affected by the outbreak, the team confirmed.

The player, who did not spend any time on the major league side of the Yankees' spring-training facility in Tampa, Florida, was isolated Friday after he developed a fever.

"On Friday morning, the minor-leaguer presented with symptoms for the very first time," said Yankees GM Brian Cashman during a conference call Sunday. "Friday morning, he woke up and presented with symptoms of fever and fatigue, and he called it in. He did not report to the facility. Turning the time back, Thursday night, he didn't go out. He ordered for pizza delivery to his room, and that was it. Symptom-free up until Friday morning when he woke up. And so, they reacted to his temperature and tested him for influenza and tested him for strep. They both came back negative."

On Sunday morning, Yankees player development director Kevin Reese texted minor league players informing them of the positive test, according to a copy of the text obtained by ESPN's Kiley McDaniel. The text said the player is recovering well and that the organization is in contact with department of health officials to figure out the next steps.....

Contribution aims to offset food insecurity issues amid COVID-19 pandemic

The coronavirus pandemic has created a threat of a different sort: Hunger. With public schools closing across the country and people isolating themselves at home, those in need have increased difficulty getting food.

As announced on Monday, Major League Baseball and the MLB Players Association have teamed up to help ease that burden with a combined $1 million donation that will be split evenly between Feeding America (FeedingAmerica.org) and Meals on Wheels America (MealsonWheelsAmerica.org).

“In these difficult times of navigating this pandemic, it is important that we come together as a society to help the most vulnerable members of our communities,” Commissioner Rob Manfred said in a release. “As an institution, Baseball is extending our commitment to addressing childhood hunger and food availability issues during this crisis. We are grateful for the partnership with our players on this critical issue, which has the potential to deeply affect children and seniors.”

Feeding America will distribute funds to local member food banks in high-need areas across the United States to help feed children and families impacted by school closures and other disruptions.

Meals on Wheels will use the funds to boost organizational capacity of its network to provide in-home meals to senior citizens in need.....

Unlike football, basketball, hockey and even soccer, there is not that much physical contact between the players. The players will need to have another spring training and that should start soon.

I see it happening if they're willing to play in empty stadiums. There's no way people will be allowed in a stadium close to one another as long as the infection rate is down to zero and this won't happen until we see a vaccine, which won't happen for at least another year and likely more.

Al Kaline is one of a handful of players that never wore a Minor League uniform and never wore the uniform of any other team but the Detroit Tigers. in 1953, Kaline went right from High School ball to the Major Leagues. The Detroit Tigers were obligated to carry Al Kaline on the MLB roster for two years because they signed him to a bonus of $35,000 This was a deterrent to paying high bounesis. Kaline's first at bat was a few days after his high school graduation ceremony. The plan may have been to carry him on the roster for two years and then send him to the minors in 1955. Instead, Kaline won the starting job in RF in 1954 and then won the MLB batting title a year later in 1955.

He was an outstanding fielder with a HOF glove and bat. as a rookie, in one game vs the White Sox, Kaline threw out a runner in 3 consecutive innings: home, third, and second. He finished with 3,007 hits and 399 HRs. As a kid my dad took me to a Tiger's game where they gave out a Kaline 3000 hit commemorative poster. That poster hung from my door bedroom door until I moved out of the house.

That was Hank's best quote ever. Sadly he was more into horses than baseball. He quietly relinquished control of the Yankees team to his much younger, smarter and more soft spoken brother Hal in 2008 and really had not been involved with the Yankees since then, and devoted his efforts to his horses.

Hal Steinbrenner has been making all the Yankees business decisions since 2008, with input from a cadre of advisors and most notably Brian Cashman, who is the best GM in baseball and the main reason why the Yankees have the team they have right now. Under the Hal-Cashman regime, the Yankees have done a better job picking their spots on free agent contracts. Cashman's forte is the scrap heap low dollar pickup - he excels at this and gets little credit for it.

Shortened season may create opportunities for more teams. This could be one of the most unusual baseball seasons as many different changes are being discussed to not just regular season play but also the playoffs.

Some of these aren’t going to be easy to pull off.

This covers some of the rule changes- all games will have DH, no mound visits, no spitting of seeds or tobacco, no 1st and 3rd base coaches, no instant replay. Obviously, the Canadian border will have to be reopened for the Blue Jays to participate in any games and if not, the games will have to proceed without their involvement. Since they aren't really a threat to win anything I do not see that as an impediment. Although another option if border is closed is to let them alternate home games or series with Detroit in the Tigers' ballpark. Those 2 teams will likely play each other a lot anyway in the realigned central division.

The games will be strange with no fans, and with the players wearing masks as well as caps, but I am looking forward to some version of baseball.
