vermont/new york back roads. Can you cross here without even going through the border stops. Of course this would be "illegal" but do they patrol those many back roads into rural quebec?

I have heard stories of people crossing when these back roads offices are closed. In some cases I believe it is possible to drive around the barriers. HOWEVER, I am told that there is electronic surveillance, and that the Quebec Police (or RCMP??) are notified that a car has crossed. Obviously it's very easy to intercept the car on these roads.

While it would be unpleasant to be rejected at the border, my intuition would be that you would be in for a world of grief if you had some kind of police record...ANY kind...and got caught crossing the border over some back road. I would not be surprised if you were actually arrested rather than just turned around and sent back.

As for your question, Curious, they ask you if you have ever been before a judge. I'm afraid that seems to cover your friend's case. She might have to come clean and hope for the best, because the appearance in court will be in the system.

I have a friend who is thinking about making a trip to Canada this year. A few years ago she was arrested for DWI, but the charges were dropped after she completed a drinking and driving education program. She never went to trial and has no conviction record. Is she still required to get a special waiver to enter Canada?

On the State Department Web site, it mentions "convictions" but not arrests without conviction.

Curious,

First of all the chances that she will be detained for interrogation by Customs, which is the only setting in which the questions Bumfie and I have discussed would be asked, is about 1 in 10 to 1 in 15 based on my personal experience. I think detainments are done randomly and without cause.

Assuming that she gets detained, she likely will be asked about DUI arrests and she better say YES and disclose it because they will find her arrest. Arrest records are easily obtained at a number of different websites. They will have access to those records so she better not try to lie.

As to whether or not the arrest, without a conviction, is ground for turning her back if she doesn't have a waiver, my guess is NO, but she may be at the mercy of the Canadian customs official's discretion. That discretion, on a bad day, could be ruthlessly exercised. Or maybe she will meet a sympathetic customs guard who, like Dee, believes in the innate goodness of his fellow man, and he will trust her to not drink, drive and kill someone in Canada. If I were your friend, I would call the Canadian consulate and ask for advice.

A few years ago, the cops showed up at my house.....

They came back the next day, arrested me for suspicion of accessory to murder, and after a plea-bargain I wound up serving 10 years in jail.

Just kidding folks! :D

Bumfie,

I have a clean record but a few years ago when I got detained, I had this customs dude hounding me about DUI arrests. I told him "no" like 3 times, and he said to me, "I am going to check on the computer and if it comes back with a DUI arrest, I am not going to be happy." I told him, "you can search all day dude, you aren't going to find anything."

This happended to me the one time I was randomly detained. I have a clean record as well. They were looking to push my buttons, asked me about 5 times if I had a DWI and threatened that they better not go through all of this and find it out later. I just remained calm and polite about the whole thing. They go after you like that to rattle your cage and hope you will say something you will regret.

could someone please list the 3 crossing points between champlain and highgate. Is one of them the 225 north highway into quebec. when is this "legal" office open. thanks. isn't there a strip club off that highway. www.bardiane2k.com. I think you take the 225 north and 202 east to get there. I would hope there is a crossing point at the 225.
