I have a question about the mods. When a member becomes a mod does he/she have to stop posting under their former identity or can they still take part in discussions?

Techman,

Unfortunately, I can't answer that question. I committed myself to being a moderator, and to me being fair and objective is my primary goal in all moderation actions.

The operative phrase should be won't.You can but decided not to.By logical extension then you are posting otherwise if you weren't then stating so would not be an issue.Your credibility has taken a major hit from the start.

Techman,

Moderators do not have to stop posting under their previous identity. However,I believe it would be incorrect to participate in discussions in threads one moderates, and we therefore avoid that as much as possible.

Guess work

Ok let's all welcome Mod5 and let him do his job. Who cares what handle he had before, knowing it will only take away from the real discussions; THE THREADS !!! If we have a problem with his decisions, We will speak out about it. Case closed.

Terb

There are some disadvantages to the discussions on TERB. On TERB, name-calling, insults, profanity, personal attacks, and mean-spirtedness all seem to be allowed. While some may feel that this allows for more open, honest, candid discussion, it can leave you with a bad taste sometimes.

I completely agree!!

That's one of the reasons I like MERB so much more than The Erotic Review (TER).

Merb moving forward.

I used to read Merb long before I joined and started posting. The reason I hesitated to actively participate was because of the rude exchanges I saw between members that seemed to go on and on. Not only was it childish it was unflattering to the reputation of the board as a well. Certain members had very bad habits of making derogatory remarks about other peoples opinions and the logic of the day consisted of a great deal of ridiculous assumptions between the rival members who would go back and forth each upping the stakes with more and more insulting names and insinuations in each post. There were certain posters who I absolutely did not want anything to do with because I had seen for myself that most conversations with them were fruitless and frustrating. I don't have any desire to have an ongoing battle of keystrokes with someone thousands of miles away who I don't even know but some people can't let things slide or even just agree to disagree. No, some people have to insult you to feel better about themselves.

Slowly things started to change. Mods started actively intervening in nasty exchanges by reminding participants of rules and consequences and banned repeat offenders. I still see it every now and then but my hats off to Mod 2 and Mod 4 for laying down the gauntlet and making Merb a civil place to discuss anything and everything. I really admired Mod 2 when he gave Fred his resignation because of a violation which he felt a supporting member was being allowed to get away with. He said he would rather quit than pretend that the rules apply to everyone equally. That showed personal pride in his integrity. When Merb members came out in force to back up Mod 2, Fred chose to back up Mod 2's position. To make people want to join and participate they must be made to feel "safe" in the sense that they are a part of a community where cyber-bully's are not tolerated. Mods are doing a great job.

Nothing like a frosty beverage after a "dust-up!"

PS Abe ...the odd bit of venting is healthy . It lowers the blood pressure ...or so I'm told. It's typical male behaviour to have a bit of a "dust-up" and then go have a beverage together immediately after.

I agree and have partaken of the "typical male behavior" on occasion myself. The type of posts I was talking about were more than venting however. They were insulting, disrespectful, malicious, and unnecessary. Just absolutely uncivil, and for some posters, much more than occasional, rather a pattern, which was why the Mods' intervened and did some house cleaning.

Bonjour à tous,
MOD 6 est un mode francophone sans agenda politique. Je vais surtout surveillé les annonces en français puisque ce site est de plus en plus francophone. Merci pour vos bienvenus et on se verra sûrement dans entre les annonces.

Hey! You haven't been around much since the new mods came on board. I was worried that you had some sort of allergy to new mods :p

Being a MOD has nothing to do with how long one has been around. In my none MOD opinion, it has more to do with if one has enough intelligence, being able to stick with the rules, no favourtism to anyone and being discreet.

As I have been asked in PMs by a few members, let me clarify some of my views regarding the responsibilities of the moderators:

- Read the board on a regular basis (at least daily).
- Read each and every thread in the forum(s) you moderates.
- Act upon factual information, not on suspicions (unless you make it clear in your communications)
- Be objective. No favoritism toward anyone, for any reason.
- Use common sense when the board's rules don't apply.
- Be ready to back your actions with proof, or at least be able to explain them if challenged about the underlying reasons.
- Respond to ALL PMs in a timely manner.
- USE COMMON SENSE.

Also, being a senior poster helps, but the key in being a good moderator is to have a good head on your shoulders, and not being afraid to do the right thing. MERB is not a "country club", it's a community service. As such, my view is that all posts should remain polite, respectful, interesting to read, truthful, and free of shills or useless comments as much as possible.

An excellent post from a decade ago. Of course we all know that we live in an imperfect world.

I'm glad the board will be moderated and welcome Mod 5 to his new position. To have the board go freestyle I would certainly quit posting and or visiting. There is a lot of backbiting that goes on and someone needs to deal with it. Yes, shills are also a problem. This is a job with responsibility and requiring integrity, I hope anyone that is given the right to moderate brings both to their new responsibility.
