No one’s mentioned “The Girlfriend Experience, the TV show, now in its second season.” OK, not a movie, but it’s far, far better, imho, than the Soderbergh-directed film of the same title with Sasha Grey from 2009.
I can’t believe it hasn’t generated more discussion. It really seems to get the double life of an escort—and in a non-gratuitous way. She's played, most icily, by Riley Keough, who I think won an Emmy for her performance, as a steely, unknowable (even to herself) law student working as an intern at some corporate firm, while servicing, as a high-end escort, a number of tech billionaires, one of whom becomes a little too obsessed with her.
Highly-recommended. Beautifully shot, scored and directed. Indeed, I can’t think of a contemporary film that’s better about the subject, especially in the Keough character's cold, soul-destroying and barely-manageable distance between her two selves.
