Mes chères études-French movie about a struggling student who resolve to prostitution. This was quite a hard movie to watch :("

"He calls me Ashley."

"Shall I be Chelsea?"

"You can be whoever you want to be."

No one’s mentioned “The Girlfriend Experience, the TV show, now in its second season.” OK, not a movie, but it’s far, far better, imho, than the Soderbergh-directed film of the same title with Sasha Grey from 2009.

I can’t believe it hasn’t generated more discussion. It really seems to get the double life of an escort—and in a non-gratuitous way. She's played, most icily, by Riley Keough, who I think won an Emmy for her performance, as a steely, unknowable (even to herself) law student working as an intern at some corporate firm, while servicing, as a high-end escort, a number of tech billionaires, one of whom becomes a little too obsessed with her.

Highly-recommended. Beautifully shot, scored and directed. Indeed, I can’t think of a contemporary film that’s better about the subject, especially in the Keough character's cold, soul-destroying and barely-manageable distance between her two selves.

Haven't seen any of season 2 yet; but it has a different storyline:

I have not seen 2009 GFE movie or the TV series but I have to say that season 1 looks pretty interesting. Season 2 not so much..

Montréal - Québec
As a cinema lover, it was a real pleasure to read this thread. It reminded me of many good movies such as Irma Ladouce and Leaving Las Vegas. It also gave me a few suggestions for my to see list.

However, i'm surprised there was no mention of Omerta, a french canadian series about organized crime in Montreal during the 90s. It was so popular that there were talks to do an english translation, but it was during the same time HBO was working on the Sopranos.

There are 3 reasons I like this series. It shows how life and sex work was in Montreal pre internet ad when there was an active red light district. The lady mackerel has a human and positive side, which is rare to find this kind of role. Sophie Lorain's character is a street walker but she is also one of the few who has a high sense of ethics and care despite her drug problems.

Unfortunately, I haven't found series where the roles of Johns is realistic. There are often portrayed as violent or idiotic which is not representative.

I remember that part of the movie Captn. I thought it was pretty funny.

Incidentally, I spend a lot of time in the great outdoors. I have never run into a traveling brothel when hunting or fishing. In Brazil, there are supposed to be boats that will visit the riverboats with GDPs during the evenings. Our captain won't allow this. We have to wait until we get back into town.

For me the coolest films about this topic are RISKY BUSINESS and TRUE ROMANCE. The first one made Tom Cruise a star and the second is a really underrated Quentin Tarantino film

I concur, great movie .
A great cast with a cool story-script.
The Dennis Hopper/ Christopher Walken scene is a classic :)

@CaptRenault - That clip from The Cowboys is great.

I am with everyone on the True Romance train - underrated movie.

And given MG_mtl's reaction, I may need to go check out The Client List

Here's another favorite scene from the Sopranos that involves, well, not prostitutes per se, but some women of questionable virtue, i.e. "the girls from Icelandic Airlines."

"Ho, it's the girls from Icelandic Air!"
