It's been reported in the news that he's in grave condition in a Phoenix hospital. I read elsewhere that he's on life support. Thoughts and prayers for the great one, who's been battling a form of Parkinson's disease for decades.

i was not a boxing fan but i had my ear glued to the radio listening to all his early fights. his athleticism was beautiful to watch inside the ring and his wit outside the ring was mesmerizing. another one of my heroes from my youth is gone.
Indeed, the Greatest has passed away. I just found out about this when i turned on my tv this morning.
He was the first boxer i idolized. He was known as Cassius Clay at the time. Well, he had legally changed his name to Muhammad Ali after converting to islam, but my parents still referred to him as 'Cassius Clay' since they had become fans of his since his days at the Olympics in the very early 60's.
In my teens, i went through a phase where i became an amateur boxer and a big part of it was due to my idolization of Ali. the great Sugar Ray Leonard was another factor.
Although saddened by the news of this great champion's passing, i also regard it as a blessing in disguise since this great man had literally been a prisoner of his own body over the past 2 decades due to the devastating effects of Parkinson's. It was sad to see him in his debilitating state the few times he made public appearances.

My most fond memory of Ali was his 3 epic fights with Smokin' Joe Frazier. Frazier won the first fight by Unanimous decision having knocked down Ali the Challenger to Frazier's Heavyweight Belt. Ali won the second fight while Champion by Unanimous decision. And Ali won the Thrilla in Manila when Frazier was ruled unfit to fight by the ring Dr. in the 15th round. Ali later said he was in just a little bit better shape than Joe was at that point.
His amazing KO of undefeated at the time Title holder George Foreman, who was KO'ing every other fighter was also epic.
Ali's genius self promotion style probably was the reason why many more people were boxing fans than otherwise. With Frazier and Ali gone, the revitalized Boxing era of the 1960's and 1970's are distant but fond memories. I imagine Joe waiting at Heaven's gate ready to welcome Ali to his next round.

I doubt that Frazier would welcome Ali to his next round. After Ali referred to Frazier as an Uncle Tom, Gorilla, House Nigga and other terms Frazier was quoted as attributing Ali's Parkinson's disease to "Divine Intervention". That was about the only thing that shut up the "Greatest Self-Promoter" of all time. When Frazier beat Ali in their first meeting - Ali stated that it was the white man's decision - even though Frazier dropped him twice, nearly broke his jaw and sent Ali to the hospital.
