Recent Restaurant Reviews
Beijing (in Chinatown, near corner of St. Urbain and de la Gauchierre): This was the greatest new find on my recent trip to Montreal. Beijing came highly recommended to me by Forever Newbie and a few other posters, and it did not disappoint. This is the best Chinese restaurant of the 8 or 9 I have tried in Chinatown, and I would place the food on the same level as Le Orchidee de Chine, even if it is not as upscale an ambience as Le Orchidee de Chine’s is. I ate dinner here three consecutive nights, I so enjoyed the food. The first night I dined on a spring roll (very tasty, just a tad greasy but nothing major), szechuan dumplings in peanut sauce (very good) and Kung Pao Chicken (very good and perfectly spiced). The second night I was joined by Special K and his friend - two very powerful appetites. This time I ordered the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, which was the best Shrimp with Lobster Sauce I have ever had. The sauce was tasty as hell, and not too heavy on the black beans. My only complaint is that it is served on lettuce leaves which tend to soak up the sauce, and you don’t want anything soaking up that sauce except your belly! The third night I again joined Special K. He got the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, which he had tried the prior night, and I got adventurous again and ordered a House Special which was called Shrimp with X.O. Sauce. The X.O. sauce was a tasty, slightly salty and spicy white sauce that was mixed with Shrimp, diced peppers and onions. Special K and I also shared an order of the honey garlic barbecued spare ribs, which I felt was the only misfire in 3 nights at this place, as the ribs were somewhat dry. One other thing I noticed here is that if you have a large group and get seated at one of the bigger tables, the various dishes are served on a spinning wooden spindle (I am not sure what this is called but I am sure that Chef or someone else can edify us on this).
Baton Rouge (Complex Desjardins): I ate dinner here with Katryna of Prime Time Escorts. After consulting with Katryna, I ordered the shrimp cocktails, the spinach artichoke dip with tortillas, and the Chicken Fingers. The shrimps were served with some kind of spice - oregano, I believe. The spinach artichoke dip was good, although a bit heavy on a cheese my taste buds could not identify. The chicken fingers were heavily battered and deeply fried, which I thought would spook Katryna, but she ended up eating more of them than I did. Overall it was good but nothing special. Katryna asked me why I didn’t order the ribs and I did not have the heart to tell her the ribs were going to make me fall asleep in her arms when I really wanted to stay awake just a little bit longer.
Reubens (St. Catherine Street): Since Doc Holliday was in town it was granted that I would eat at least one meal here. I met Doc and AlexK the first day for a late lunch, and ordered the smoked salmon on a Montreal bagel, which was slightly overtoasted and I had not even requested that it be toasted. AlexK ended up getting hassled by our waitress for bringing in a coffee from another local restaurant, and they actually forced him to pour the coffee into one of Reubens’ cups. AlexK was not happy about this.
Chez Cora (Stanley): I met Doc, Special K, AlexK and Stripper Lover for breakfast one day. I was really in the mood for pancakes, but they don’t have pancakes on the menu here - only crepes. So I ordered a crepe stuffed with strawberries, bananas, and custard. It was very good.
Eggspectation (de Maisonneuve): I ate breakfast here with Special K and his friend. I was finally able to satisfy my pancake craving, by ordering banana pancakes which were very good. I also like the orange juice here, which unlike Chez Cora is always fresh squeezed.
St. Hubert (Complex Desjardins): While I was having dinner with Special K at Beijing, my cellphone rang and it was Doc Holliday asking me to join him and some others for dessert at St. Hubert. When I got there I ordered an ice cream sundae that is served with a sauce called “sucre de creme.” Looking at the menu I had no idea what this was, but it looked like some kind of caramel or butterscotch sauce. I was told that it is actually similar but made from maple. It was all pretty good but I prefer caramel.
