Recent Restaurant Reviews

Beijing (in Chinatown, near corner of St. Urbain and de la Gauchierre): This was the greatest new find on my recent trip to Montreal. Beijing came highly recommended to me by Forever Newbie and a few other posters, and it did not disappoint. This is the best Chinese restaurant of the 8 or 9 I have tried in Chinatown, and I would place the food on the same level as Le Orchidee de Chine, even if it is not as upscale an ambience as Le Orchidee de Chine’s is. I ate dinner here three consecutive nights, I so enjoyed the food. The first night I dined on a spring roll (very tasty, just a tad greasy but nothing major), szechuan dumplings in peanut sauce (very good) and Kung Pao Chicken (very good and perfectly spiced). The second night I was joined by Special K and his friend - two very powerful appetites. This time I ordered the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, which was the best Shrimp with Lobster Sauce I have ever had. The sauce was tasty as hell, and not too heavy on the black beans. My only complaint is that it is served on lettuce leaves which tend to soak up the sauce, and you don’t want anything soaking up that sauce except your belly! The third night I again joined Special K. He got the Shrimp with Lobster Sauce, which he had tried the prior night, and I got adventurous again and ordered a House Special which was called Shrimp with X.O. Sauce. The X.O. sauce was a tasty, slightly salty and spicy white sauce that was mixed with Shrimp, diced peppers and onions. Special K and I also shared an order of the honey garlic barbecued spare ribs, which I felt was the only misfire in 3 nights at this place, as the ribs were somewhat dry. One other thing I noticed here is that if you have a large group and get seated at one of the bigger tables, the various dishes are served on a spinning wooden spindle (I am not sure what this is called but I am sure that Chef or someone else can edify us on this).

Baton Rouge (Complex Desjardins): I ate dinner here with Katryna of Prime Time Escorts. After consulting with Katryna, I ordered the shrimp cocktails, the spinach artichoke dip with tortillas, and the Chicken Fingers. The shrimps were served with some kind of spice - oregano, I believe. The spinach artichoke dip was good, although a bit heavy on a cheese my taste buds could not identify. The chicken fingers were heavily battered and deeply fried, which I thought would spook Katryna, but she ended up eating more of them than I did. Overall it was good but nothing special. Katryna asked me why I didn’t order the ribs and I did not have the heart to tell her the ribs were going to make me fall asleep in her arms when I really wanted to stay awake just a little bit longer.

Reubens (St. Catherine Street): Since Doc Holliday was in town it was granted that I would eat at least one meal here. I met Doc and AlexK the first day for a late lunch, and ordered the smoked salmon on a Montreal bagel, which was slightly overtoasted and I had not even requested that it be toasted. AlexK ended up getting hassled by our waitress for bringing in a coffee from another local restaurant, and they actually forced him to pour the coffee into one of Reubens’ cups. AlexK was not happy about this.

Chez Cora (Stanley): I met Doc, Special K, AlexK and Stripper Lover for breakfast one day. I was really in the mood for pancakes, but they don’t have pancakes on the menu here - only crepes. So I ordered a crepe stuffed with strawberries, bananas, and custard. It was very good.

Eggspectation (de Maisonneuve): I ate breakfast here with Special K and his friend. I was finally able to satisfy my pancake craving, by ordering banana pancakes which were very good. I also like the orange juice here, which unlike Chez Cora is always fresh squeezed.

St. Hubert (Complex Desjardins): While I was having dinner with Special K at Beijing, my cellphone rang and it was Doc Holliday asking me to join him and some others for dessert at St. Hubert. When I got there I ordered an ice cream sundae that is served with a sauce called “sucre de creme.” Looking at the menu I had no idea what this was, but it looked like some kind of caramel or butterscotch sauce. I was told that it is actually similar but made from maple. It was all pretty good but I prefer caramel.

A "Lazy Susan" ? ;)
This is standard at any Chinese restaurant.

Yes, they are lazy susans and are very common on large round tables in Chinese restaurants. Most Chinese restarurants targeting Chinese/Asian customers would have large round tables since dining in large groups be it friends and/or extended family is a common practice for Chinese, and the custom is to order a bunch of dishes to share among everyone. The lazy susan makes it that much easier to get to the food in the different dishes on the table.

Beijing is one of my favorite casual restaurants in Montreal. Their food is good, authentic, and at reasonable price. It is a small restaurant and the tables are close together so it is not the best restaurant for intimate dining, or discussion about the hobby.

Dear Mr. EB

Since you seem to appreciate a lot the chinese cuisine, I highlly recommended you one of the newest star in the Montreal restaurant scene :

5163 St-Laurent Blvd. (near St-Joseph or Laurier St.)

It's a little bit out of the downtown district, but not to far.

All the critics agree, it's one of the best new addition in town.

Here's the link for their website :

http://www.borestaurant.com/

The owner of the place, Suzanne Liu, also have another restaurant well acclaim, Soy, also on St-Laurent Blvd.

Decor is nice
Food is outstanding
Price are very reasonable
And they have a nice wine list not to expensive.

Only negative point : don't take the Poulet au Citron (lemon chicken), take something else.

Enjoy

Soft-Shell Crab

I had soft-shell crab (one of my many food passions) at Beijing (prepared with either black pepper or a mix of peppers), and was unimpressed. I also tried it at Toyo, and again was unimpressed. Does anyone have any recommendations for a restaurant in Montreal that does it well? The best I had was a deep-fried beer-batter version in North Carolina.

smoked meat

Reubens (St. Catherine Street): ....

I had lunch at the Reubens Restaurant (not the Deli) one time and the hostess was just hot, hot, hot.

The smoked meat sandwich is good, but nothing compared to Schwartz's, especially the texture of the meat. It was explaned to me that only a few places (includng Schwartz's Deli) do it the old fashion way which takes much longer. Most other restaurants/deli's use smoke meat that are chemically enhanced so that it takes much less time to get smoked.... it is just not as good.

Another new star is Tapeo on Villeray St. (in the middle of nowhere, near Jarry Park)

The best place for Tapas

So popular, it's very hard to book. You have to do it few weeks in advance

Here's the web link :

I used to go often to Casa Tapas on Rachel St., but since I discovered this new place (open a year ago), I didn't returned.

iMaude,
True, Le Taj is hard to beat among the Indian restaurants in Mtl.
Other favourites:
Casa Galicia for their paellas (I am difficult when it comes to Paella because I love them. Only Casa Galicia managed to fill my paella's cravings).
Marven's (Parc Extension) is my favourite Greek restaurant.

Does their paella have the bottom layer of rice nicely crusted (called "soccarat") ?

Was she blond and in her early 20's? If so, i know who you're talking about and she was definitely hot, but unfortunately, no longer working there. I used to talk about movies all the time with her....she was nearly as knowledgeable as i was about the movie business.

She looked young and not over 20, so probably not the same young woman.

Coming to Montreal - Looking for Good Food

Hello All,

I will be in Montreal on business at the end of March and would be glad to hear any tips on good restraunts in the city.

Being from Western Canada, I love a fanatstic steak, but also enjoy Frech cuisine as well.

What can you all recommend as far as a combination of the following:

Great Food - steaks, lamb, veal, duck etc

Good Atmosphere - not nessecarily romantic, but classy or classy with a funky edge

Good Wine List - selections of French, Spanish, Californian, Australian, Canadian

Martini - a place that knows how to make a gin martini - dry martini, that knows a twist of lemon is not a wedge

Price range - $40-50 per entree (business dinner, cost is not a big issue cause 5Hole is not paying)

Attractive Servers - not a topless place but somehwere with some eye candy to keep the clinets I am entertaining feeling good about being there...

Any help would be appreciated.

5Hole, the best steak in town is La Queue de Cheval, next to Sheraton Centre and a few steps of Chez Paree.
Cute hostesses but only male waiters.

If you are willing to forego the eye candy, I suggest Europea, on de la Montage (also close to the Sheraton). Try their 9-course tasting menu with matching wines. I have no idea about how well they make a martini, but their food is superb. Check it out at www.europea.ca

5hole,

For steak, Gibby's in Old Montreal and Moishes on St. Laurent are both very good choices, and more reasonably priced than Qeue de Cheval. With Moishes, the ambience is extremely bland and Gibby's is kind of loud and unromantic. However, you are not going to stay in your price range if you act upon the other posters' suggestions. You will spend wild amounts of money at Qeue de Cheval and Europea, they are both money pits, major HDH restaurants, as is Latini. Some people like to spend up to $100 per person on dinner, others want to save the money for escorts and SCs. You gotta decide what it's going to be. You can have a food orgy at Q or Europea or Latini but it's gonna cost ya. And the posters above really don't give two shits about your wallet, so it's up to you to decide whether you do.

Beav, he did say (and I quote), "cost is not a big issue", so yes, I don't "give two shits" (though I don't usually use profanity) about his wallet. :D

He did say $40 - $50 per entree; Europe's 5-course table d'hote is about $47, which is well within his budget.

Chef,

This is what he said, he did also say he is not paying, but I assume he is being honest with the person who is.
Beav: there was obviously a "race" condition between my editing my post and you submitting yours.

For enhanced service, I'd suggest you reserve under "Goldstein" and once seated, throw a "Mommala! Oy!" and a "I'm all verklempt" here and there and loud enough so everyone hears you. The waiter might think you're a little ibabooble in the capi but if you say that his steak was like butta' as you tip him, he might smile back.
