Spin,

I have been to Mystic Pizza, but never tried their clams. Basically all along the shoreline in Connecticut are very good seafood restaurants, from New Haven due east. The best seafood in New England is found in Cape Cod. Out there they have a clam or lobster shack on every block.

Now that Delmo is closed I would not know where to go for seafood in Montreal.

La queue de Cheval

The beef of La queue de cheval come from Colorado. Not Alberta. Just FYI. Buddy of mine is a chef there. And, no they do not serve low quality meat. It's over priced high quality meat. Way over priced but it's the good stuff.

Best Steakhouses in Montreal

Welcome to Montreal TieDyeGuy,

As stated by Eagerbeaver and ck_nj, the best 3 are Moishes, Queue de Cheval and Gibby's. My favorite if I may say is Gibby's, its in old Montreal in a building built in 1765, the atmoshere is quite unique. Good beef and history, what a combo !

Please review the following links for more info on these fine establishements that serves perfectly aged corn fed Canada grade A beef.

The best quality beef in existance is Japanese Kobe or Wagyu beef. As far as I know the only place in Montreal that serves it is Kaizen and Treehouse. If anyone has doubts just do a search on your favorite search engine for wagyu. Once you have tried it everything else is just dead cow. If you are looking for a very private place to take your lady or your favorite sp for dinner try Tokyo Sukiyaki on Mountain Sights just off Jean Talon. It is the oldest Japanese resto in town and it's composed exclusively of private tatami rooms. The geisha will take your orders and leave, closing the door behind her, ensuring your privacy. The food is quite good and the sake is great. Just make sure your date wears a dress or skirt :D Good food, good sake and a hot date make for a perfect evening out at this resto.

Hi Cloe

It's true that the sushi is not the most imaginative but the quality is still good, just simple. The sukiyaki, which is for two people, is very good. I really like the steak teriyaki, with a chicken yakitori entree. The food is more authentic Japanese style than most places in town. The teriyaki sauce is not as sweet or as thick as Katsura but is very similar to that found at Sakura Garden. Food wise, my favorite Japanese resto is Katsura, and I know that others may dissagree with that, as it was my first Japanese restaurant. But for pure atmosphere and privacy Tokyo Sukiyaki cannot be topped. It is private enough that the last time I was there, with my ex gf, I was able to sample some sushi that was not on the menu  Short summer skirts can be lots of fun! :D

Food For Thought?

Wow, when I lived in San Francisco, I thought the restaurants there were out of the world. Never realize the restaurants in Montreal are top notch as well. So may be when I exile to Montreal, I shall just have gluttonous pleasure upon gluttonous pleasure? On the other hand, thinking like a utilitarian hedonist, why wouldn’t I dine with my gorgeous Montreal companions for more and more hedonistic fun? Too bad, all these official duties are hindering my exile!!! :( Or if these beautiful Montreal companions visit my secret hideout overseas, the professor can certainly cook up a storm with the best Louisisgreat Cuisine ever. :)

Sorry, I can never resist a restaurant thread. It's hardly a new restaurant having been open for 30+ years I think, but if you're not from Montreal, you really need to try Troika on Crescent between De Maisonneuve and Sherbrooke (below street level). A lot of people haven't heard of it because it's not one of those modern places all the young people with money go to be seen.

It's french/russian, and the service and food there are simply incredible. For those of you that like vodka and caviar they have dedicated menu just for that with lots of choices. The main menu is pretty well balanced. They also do a 7 course table d'hote which i highly recommend. The deserts are to die for. When we got back to my place, the combination of red wine and chocolate mousse cake had my date ripping my clothes off so fast i couldn't believe it... Seriously, if you're trying to score with a girl, bring her there and it's a done deal.

I've eaten at a lot of good restaurants all over the world and my experience at Troika was right up there with the best. They even have musicians that will play requests at your table.

It's not a trendy place like most of the new restaurants and the clientele was older than the places on St-Laurent. It's also free of the constant buzz of some restaurants. This is a plus to me, but others only want to go to the places that are "in."

In terms of value, it gets very high marks. My bill was 250 including a bottle of red, but I felt it was money well spent, which isn't always the case when you spend 250 for 2 at a restaurant. It's much better value than say Le Queue de Cheval. My date thanked me in more ways than one and said that it was the best meal she'd ever had in her life.

Oh you need time when you eat there because i was there for a good 3 hours, and not because you have to wait forever between courses (which you don't), there's just 7 of them ;p

the restaurant called Blue Nile on St.Denis street is one of my top 3.
It is Ethiopian restaurant and it is very unique and delicious.

I am still looking for a nice Russian restaurant - besides the one on Crescent street.

vargas centreville,,514 875 4545..sushi,steaks mmmm

On the corner of university and rene levesque across from place ville marie.
Very big restaurant, great 4-7 (packed every day for the business croud who like to drink at cheap prices during that time)..
Fabulous sushi..good steaks....huge pasta portions...interesting wine list...
desserts are....what can i say..it`s a steakhouse.......maybe the chef will
jazz them up one day...Service is friendly, efficient, and sometimes very fast...Best way to eat there is to ask your waiter for a tasting of sushi to start (or the vip platter of non-sushi products good for 4 to 5 peeople...at 65 bucks , calmars, shrimp, satay, grilled oystermushroom, grilled aspergus, grilled peppers, grilled zuchini) after that try the 32 oz t bone (if you are man enough) or the 20 ounce rib eye...and then if you really want to take it up another notch ask for a rocklobstertails platter (each tail costs 15 bucks)
..order as many as you want,,just remember 15 dollars a tail...good...Then oncee you have finished your steaks, ask for the bill and then move to the bar...very very friendly bar staff...

EB, if you like Dim Sum, you could try the Holiday Inn in Chinatown (don't snub it just cause it's holiday inn heh). I haven't been there in a few years but I remember enjoying it. A lot could have changed though... It's a very nice atmosphere as well. The restaurant is next to an indoor pond with a bridge going over it, etc. It's only on sunday mornings though. Actually now that I think of it, I might go this weekend..

What I'm personally looking for is a REALLY good italian restaurant that uses only fresh ingredients. I usually go to the same few places because i'm too lazy to explore outside the core downtown area. They're ok, but none of them can compare so far to the two places I went to in NYC a couple of years ago.

Has anyone been to Bronte yet? It's pretty new and is getting very good reviews. I believe it's french/mediterranean fusion.. not sure though.

32 ounce of T-bone? now that's a meal.. I should try. 12 oz steak does not really fill me up. I will give you a review on this one.

I once tried 16oz prime cut roast beef and that got rid of the hunger but not quite filled up my stomach. Those who saw me at the party -> yes I know I am not a big buy but when I am hungry (quite often) I could eat a big meal (just for the record, I once ate 62 pieces of sushi about 1 1/2 years ago).

prep_mtl,

I have had dim sum at the Holiday Inn Select and reviewed it on this Board. It's good, but limited selection.

Whenever I go to Toronto, I always stop by Chinatown for yummy yum amazing variety of Chinese food. Last time when I went to Montreal (God knows how long ago :( ) I had some very decent Chinese dinners. Definitely will try French, Greek, and Chinese when the opportunity knocks again. :)

Fresh Reviews!!!!!!

Here are reviews of some of the restaurants at which I ate during my recent trip to Montreal:

Le Maison Kam Fung (St. Urbain, near Rene Levesque) - I have eaten the dim sum lunch here many times, so I decided to take a friend here for dinner. Very disappointing. The food was okay at best and the service was awful. When I asked the waiter for soy sauce for my shrimp dumplings he told me I didn't need any because the dumpling "is sweet as it cooked in its own sauce." It was a steamed dumpling and there was no sauce. I hate waiters who think they are Emeril Legasse. Just shut up and get me my soy sauce dude!!!!

Gibby's (Old Montreal) - I dined here with a friend as well. I would rate it as good food but overpriced. But there wasn't an empty seat in the place. They serve these funny looking marinated pickles at each table before dinner. They are smaller and taste different than the American dill-style pickle. For my main course I got the house salad and the filet mignon. The filet was perfectly cooked to my order (medium rare), but the meat had a taste and texture that is different than what I am used to in American steakhouses. Not better or worse, just different. Had the key lime pie for dessert which was quite good.

Three Amigos (St. Catherine) - This was the best meal I had on my trip. Recommended to me as the "best Mexican food in Montreal", it certainly lived up to that billing as it was as good as or better than any of the top Mexican restaurants I have eaten at in Connecticut. My friend and I went through several orders of chips and salsa and we also were served a special "super hot" salsa which was en fuego. The entree I ordered was the beef chimichanga which was superbly cooked in a cherry brandy sauce. :)

Eggspectation (corner rue De la Montagne and De Maissoneuve) - I ate here twice, once for lunch and once for breakfast. Lunch was surprisingly a lot better. I had the grilled chicken and avocado salad which was excellent. When I came back for breakfast, I was disappointed by the smoked salmon and scrambled eggs I ordered. The salmon was fine, but surprisingly it was the eggs that they messed up. My eggs were overcooked and browned like they were trying to make an omelette. It was kind of dry and tasteless. My local Greek diner makes better scrambled eggs than this place.

Chez Chine (restaurant at Holiday Inn Select) - I ate here twice, once for lunch and once for dinner. For lunch I had the dim sum which was okay. As previously noted, you don't have the selection that you would at Ruby Rouge or Le Maison Kam Fung, but it's certainly decent. Dinner was more of a disappointment. I ordered from the fixed price menu for one and got the prawns with honey glazed walnuts. Sounded enticing on the menu, but the sauce was rather plain and the prawns were very small and there were only 5 or so. Not a fit meal for a hungry hobbyist!

The Holiday Inn on Sherbrooke, next the the Delta Montreal, has a restaurant and bar that is open till midnight. The food is decent and the price is not so bad either. Here is where you could have wine.

I think the kitchen closes around midnight, so if you're there around 10:30 or 11:00 pm, you should be fine.

Now, there are also a couple of restaurants downtown that open late, but may not necessarily serve wine. Ben's on de Maisoneuve opens until at least 2:00 am, or it may even be 24/7. It has the typical hot diner's meals that one could enjoy. I don't know about wine though.

Schwartz on St. Laurent opens till around 2:00 am during the weekends, but I think it may only be open till midnight during the weekdays. I am not sure though. Many people rave about the smoked meat there, while I found it to be just average.

Zesto's on rue University, between Rene Levesque and Ste. Catherine, opens
all the time I think. I have been there at 5:00 am and it was still open. The best time to go this place is around 2:30-4:00 am, when you could see many ladies enjoying a meal and just winding down.

If you prefer a nicer place, try Alexander's on Peel St, Downtown area and L'Express on St. Denis (I believe). Both are French bistro's.

Late food and wine

As Pen mentioned Alexandre's on Peel is a good bet. The kitchen is open to 2 am serving from a somewhat limited "terrace menu" and definitely there is wine. Also Pino's on the corner of rue Crescent and deMaisonneuve seems to be almost always open; pretty good Italian food and good wine by the glass. There are lots of other pub style places nearby that serve pretty good food such as Dundee's on deMaisonneuve. That area of town basically never sleeps.
