Pino's

JustaJohn,

You are right: Pino's is on the corner of deMaisonneuve and rue Crescent (a very busy corner); I will correct/edit my previous post with the correct address.

Thanks,

Coffee

For coffee lovers, I must report that I had the best cappucino I have experienced in Montreal, at a little Cafe called Au Pain Dore (or something like that) right across the street from the Atwater market. Cappuccino is served in a large ceramic mug and there is a nice outdoor terrace with tables where you can sip that coffee and observe some rather pleasant sights. There are also different types of breads and pastries on the menu as I recall.

Never tried this place, but I always like the Atwater market itself. There are a lot of little tiny, family run ethnic places in there. It does have a bit of a food court feel to it. But, the food is much better than that. The chinese restaurant next to the liquor store is good. And there is a little French Patisserie in there that is also recommended.

Also, the bagel place in the market has a wood burning oven and there bagels are quite good.

Mr. Luvr,

That whole complex, between the bakeries, breads, bagels and pastries, is a freaking carbohydrate paradise. Not the place to go if you are on South Beach diet!!!!!!!

That is true. But, I am sure a round with one of the Montreal finest ladies should be enough to compensate for your indulgence!!

Pino's

Master_Oldies,

I am glad Pino's worked out for you. The last time I ate there they were serving a surprisingly excellent Sangiovese by the glass.

It is always nice to here how a recommendation turned out!

Breakfast

I really like Eggspectation at the corner of Maisonneuve and De La Montagne. I'm sure they'll have what you're looking for.

A lot of MTLers will recommend Chez Cora, but I don't like them as much...

Queue De Cheval

We had dinner this last Sunday and Monday at Queue De Cheval. The whole experience was great and the steak was absolutely mouthwatering, tender, and flavorful. Between all of us we sampled the Prime Rib, Lou's cut, Porterhouse and Tenderloin. Every cut was fantastic! We went to Angus Beef on Saturday and it was good but once we went to Cheval we all agreed we would never go anywhere else.

I read some reviews that said the service could be rude. We did not see this at all. As a matter of fact we actually had a few drinks with one of the waiters at Ziggys' (on Crescent) Sunday night. He gave us his card and told us to call the next day and mention his name to get a good table. We did and got a great table, we saw him there and the waiter we had the night before came and talked to us as well, they even remembered our names.

Only moment we didn't enjoy was when the check arrived. As I was told earlier in this thread last year, it is expensive beyond belief. Between the two nights, dinner for the four of us totalled nearly $1,000.00. No wonder they were nice to us!

I Prefer Vargas Centreville 514 875 4545

..Granted the service is not as refined as RibnReef, Or QueueDeChevale, but the price is cheeper, and if you a roast beef lover like me, and if quantity is as important as quality, then I challenge you to order my personal favourite,
the VARGAS PRIME RIB CUT.....ounce after ounce of tenderness and flavour;
all 20 ounces aand it's boneless.......mmmm......eat it at the bar......some of their lady bar staff; very busy 4 a 7.....

Le Petite Poucet

Today I took a ride with the hobbyist known as Stripper Lover north into the country and he drove me to the Laurentian Mountains (1 hour north of Montreal) where we had an excellent late breakfast at a mountainside restaurant called Le Petite Poucet. The service was a bit slow, but when the food finally arrived it was well worth waiting for. I had scrambled eggs with the house-made ham and bacon, which were absolutely delicious, home fries, toast, baked beans, OJ and coffee. It was very, very good although SL and I were going bananas waiting for the food to come because we were both starving. But the meal really hit the spot.

On the way back in Montreal, SL and I stopped at that infamous Orange Julep - the one where the famous MelissaDoll had her pics taken which were posted in another thread by Dee. I ordered a small Orange Julep. Closest thing I ever had to that in the US was at Orange Julius. The Orange Julep is actually a tastier concotion I think made out of real Orange juice mixed with egg whites into a frothy brew. It hit the spot on this muggy and overcast day.

Eager Beaver,

The real name of that restaurant is "Le Petit Poucet". They have a real good reputation for ham thta is smoked by themself.

They are located on the route 117 at Val-David.

St. Hubert

It was the birthday of the hobbyist known as Doc Holliday, so we celebrated last night by going to Doc's favorite chicken and rib restaurant, St. Hubert. I got the ribs which were very tasty, and I was really licking the bones afterward. For dessert I got some kind of Canadian specialty called Chemous pudding. It seemed like a bread pudding with a scoop of ice cream, but it really did not taste like breading pudding. It was actually very sweet like a sugarbread. Never had anything quite like it, but it was a bit too sweet for me.

Les Princesses & Other Reviews in Brief

During my trip I went with the hobbyists known as Donny B and Stripper Lover to the famous topless restaurant called Les Princesses. You definitely should not go here for the food - it's terrible. It's located in a rather dreadful looking neighborhood and from the outside, the place looks like a major dive. When you go inside there is some slight improvement. The crowd appeared to be basically regular guys, blue collar locals, and the atmosphere is that of a typical diner except for the topless ladies. I saw about 4 or 5 waitresses on duty, two of whom were reasonably attractive.

Some other reviews:

Moishes - Finally went to this famous steakhouse with a group of friends. I had the junior Prime Rib which was more than a meal for me, together with a "potato sampler" consisting of Jewish-style pierogies, latkas or potato pancakes served with sour cream, and a "Monte Carlo" style stuffed baked potato. The meal also came with the famous cole slaw served in a vinegar-based dressing. It was a nice meal, although a bit expensive and the place is lacking somewhat in decor and ambience. Not the place to take a date.

Three Amigos - Went here with a friend. I have eaten at and previously reviewed this restaurant. This time I got the vanilla shrimp which I did not enjoy as much as the beef chimichanga with cherry brandy sauce. However I tried the 28 ounce banana pina colada and it was one of the best pina coladas I have ever had, and since they use real bananas, it's quite filling.

It should be noted that a very reliable source has told me that Carlos and Pepe's has made some strides and should now be favored for Mexican food over Three Amigos. I have also heard that one must sit upstairs at C&P to avoid the feeling of claustrophobia at the lower level on which the tables were tightly packed together (at least the last time I was there). I also heard that in a recent poll, C&P for the first time was voted #1 for Mexican food in Montreal over Three Amigos which had held that honor for many recent years.

Barasso- I had dinner here with Stripper Lover. The house specialty is a barbecued half chicken with spicy sauce which they will serve on the side if you ask. The service here was a bit slow and the chicken slightly overcooked for my taste, but otherwise it's a good choice for a large portion at a reasonable price.

Thursday's- I ate lunch here with the hobbyists known as Breadman and Donny B. I ordered the Cote d'Azur salad which was excellent and I highly recommend it. It is a mixed greens salad topped with smoked salmon, grilled shrimp and scallops. This is likely going to be a repeat lunch destination for me because that is exactly the kind of salad I like for lunch, with my three favorite seafoods.

Zestos - Ate a late night snack here one night. The food is nothing special but if it's late and you're very hungry and not picky, and just need some food in your body, then it's a place to go to.

Horse Meat?

Is it true that you can order horse meat in Montreal restaurants? I saw it on the menu but I couldn't believe they would be serving it rather than riding it.

Horse meat is relatively popular in Montreal, as well as being highly nutritional.
It is easier to find at butcher's, some specialize in it.
I have never had it, but willing to try if Eager Beaver wants to treat me to lunch!

Reviews

Here are some reviews of my culinary experiences on my recent trip to Montreal:

DaEmma (Old Montreal): This Italian restaurant serves upscale Italian cuisine in a stone building that provides an ambience something along the lines of upscale medieval castle/dungeon. The food is good (I would not say exceptional) and pricy. The menu is on a small blackboard written in chalk in Italian, and fortunately it was translated by the waiter (who in our case was a bit slow, considering they weren't very busy that night). I sampled the marinated artichoke hearts, the lasagna with meat sauce, and the creme caramel for dessert. All were good, but none were great.

Chao Praya (50 Laurier): One of my favorites in Montreal, this Thai eatery still serves outstanding cuisine. I went with several friends and sampled the Tom Kai Gha soup (chicken coconut soup), Beef and Chicken Satay (broiled, skewered meat served with peanut and cucumber dipping sauces), Chicken dumplings with peanut sauce, Beef with Chili Sauce and Basil (superb), Chicken with Cashew Nuts, and Pad Thai (Thai rice noodles mixed with egg, chopped peanuts, vegetables and chicken). Accompaniments included lychee martinis (mixture of lychee liquer, vodka and juice) and for dessert, Thai tapioca pudding with coconut milk. Possibly the best Asian food you will get in Montreal for the price, but much of it is pretty spicy so be forewarned. One humorous note: during the dinner a kid kept making faces at me and I made faces back at him, much to the amusment of my dinner companions who did not know that I could behave like a chimpanzee in an upscale restaurant. :D

Jardin de Nelson (Place de Jacques Cartier, Old Montreal): I went here for lunch with the hobbyist known as Stripper Lover. They have an interesting selection of lunch salads, and I think I ended up picking the wrong one (the Asiatique, which was an Asian salad with too many mandarin oranges and a soy ginger sauce which was a bit too sweet, even for my sugary taste buds). SL got the Albacore salad which actually looked better than mine did, except that SL mixed his tuna in with everything, which I would not have done. I saw some other tables ordering other salads which looked even better than the ones we ordered. I think I messed up on my selection, but you know sometimes that happens. :(

Eggspectation (can't recall which location this one was at): Had breakfast here and ordered the "All American" which is 2 eggs, 2 slices of toast, 2 sausages, 2 slices of ham, 2 strips bacon, baked beans and home fries. Very good, appropriate late morning breakfast fare.

Reubens (St. Catherine St.): Had a combo which was just like the "All American" at Eggspectation, except they threw in 2 pancakes and subtracted the baked beans. Good.

Some sad news to report: The Kojax at Complex Desjardins, a legendary souvlaki stand which I had eaten at zillions of times, is apparently gone. I was shocked and disappointed that I could not get "Kojaxed" this trip, and had to settle for a shawarama at Basha. Does anyone know what happened to this Kojax? They were always busy at lunch whenever I went there.
