Question.

Anyone ever heard of Toque? I read somewhere that it is one of the most highly esteemed restaurants in Montreal. Whats the deal, is it that good? Prices? Type of Cuisine? Difficulty getting in? Are the waiters pretentious snobs(just the way I like them)? Thanks in advance for any answers.

Le Latini

Finding myself in Montreal for the first time in a few years, I thought I would see if my favorite restaurant in town was a good as I remembered. I love Italian food and wine and have been fortunate enough to eat at many restaurants considered among the best in North America for Italian cuisine. Le Latini is as good as the New York, LA, and San Francisco establishments I have been to, and on par with some of the better ones in northern Italy.

What is strange about Le Latini is that it is not listed in travel guides and while it is known by the top hotels, many people in Montreal have never heard of it. If you search the web, you will find their recipe for Tiramisu, a few reviews, but that is about it. I have been told it has to do with their ownership, but that is simply speculation.

If you are looking for a great Italian meal and a unique Italian wine, I have not found a better place in Canada. That being said, it is also considered one of the more expensive restaurants in Canada (expect to pay at least $100 per person + wine) and the service level will depend on the waiter (can be a little snobby).

Check out www.montrealfood.com for reviews of some local restos. They seem to stay away from the over exposed ones and you can find some good recommendations here.

Ned_Braden, you should go try Il Sole (http://english.montrealplus.ca/portal/profile.do?&profileID=513666).

Great food, wonderful wine selection, way cheaper than Le Latini but still superb quality, I can't recommend it highly enough.

Another good place that's even cheaper but still yummy, is Sans Menu, which is way out in Saint Henri. (You know, it is near a place that I assume is a strip club but I've never seen revued, called Caresses)

My Recent Restaurant Reviews

I am disappointed to see there have been no reviews posted here recently.

I was in Montreal last week and had a chance to again sample some good food. On this trip, I did not get to every place I wanted to go, but nevertheless had some decent meals at the following establishments:

La Grand Mere Poule (Ave. Du Mont Royal): I had breakfast here with Stripper Lover and regnaD. This is a breakfast joint located somewhere in a French neighborhood. Menu is in French only, which meant SL had to order for me. I was served a nice basic breakfast of bacon, eggs, coffee and juice which was served with banana bread and fresh fruit.

Chez Nick: (somewhere in Westmount, SL drove there): Another fairly good basic breakfast place. They make a nice cappucino, in a smaller mug.

Chez Cora: (Avenue du Parc): Breakfast not as good as the two places mentioned above. I noticed that 3 Francophones who sat down after me and ordered after me were served before I was. Don't know if this was a coincidence or not. Eggs were greasy.

Reubens (St. Catherine Street): I usually end up here at least once per trip. This time I had the smoked salmon on the Monreal bagel, which is growing on me, even though it is a bagel that is not really suitable for sandwiches.

Jardin de Orient (on St. Catherine near the Hyatt/Place de Arts): This is a combination Japanese/Thai/Vietnamese restaurant. I ate here for dinner and opted for the Thai cuisine. It was pretty good, but I found that my entree, which was the beef with crispy spinach and mixed vegetables in peanut sauce, had an insufficient amount of meat. The vegetables were all fresh and perfectly cooked and the sauce was good, I just felt a little bit cheated on the amount of meat.

Toyo (rue de la Montagne): Ate at this Japanes hibachi steakhouse after seeing "Flightplan" at the Paramount. Food is good, but a bit pricy for what they are serving. I had the filet mignon full course dinner. Would recommend for hibachi fans, but I doubt I would repeat any time soon as there are many other good choices in that neighborhood.

Casa Tapas (Rachel): I ate here with Stripper Lover back in September, on my prior trip. Very good tapas concept food. For those unfamiliar with the tapas concept, they serve smaller entree dishes, so if you are two people, you order 6-7 different dishes. SL and I ordered a bunch of things, the most memorable of which were mussels with a spicy marinara sauce, some kind of lamb medallions with a brown gravy, and pork medallions also served in a different kind of brown gravy. Please note that with the shrimp dishes, the shrimps are served with head and legs still on, so it is a lot of work to clean and eat them. Serving seafood whole is very common in Spanish and Portuguese cuisine.

Went there a few years ago with my ex for sushi, damn near choked cuz the bloody sushi chef hadn't deboned my salmon sashimi completely... imagine almost swallowing a 1" piece of fishbone!!!

Aside from that the Katsura across the street has great sushi and their steak teriyaki is amazing tender, melts in your mouth.

Best Parisian Cafe/Impromptu Late Night Eat: L'Express (Cornichons and mustard)

Best Chinese: Keung Kee, second floor Gauchetiere St in Chinatown (very unknown, best Chinese I have ever had)
Best Meat: Schwartz's (on the main)
Best Flaky Vegan Trendy Spot: Santropol (st urbain)
Best Greek: Milos (parc) and Jardin De Panos (best terrace) (duluth)
Best Iranian: Tehran in NDG (great meats)(across from that metro in ndg)

BEST DINNER IN TOWN (excluding traditional french):

1) Schwartz's Steak and Meat Combo with two cherry cott sodas and a pickle

2) Keung Kee (Hot and Sour Soup, General tao chicken and tofu), duck, BBQ pork, etc.

3) Chao Phraya: Order everything, but the Garlic and Pepper Duck is one of the best (and consistent) dishes ever made anywhere...seriously. My friends from NYC ordered 3 plates in a row and then insisted to go into the kitchen and thank the chef, just for the garlic duck, which can be served as chicken or other duck substitutions. Let's face it, Montreal eating is all about things like duck, the fatty bird that you wouldn't usually eat returning to your Northeastern real life...

I am not that impressed with Gibby's or Moishes, or even the steak at Le Queue De Cheval, but the rest of the food at Cheval was amazing, and service was nice and quick and attentive.

V11,

It may come as a surprise to you, but I have encountered only a few restaurants in Montreal proper which had menus exclusively in French. I would say a good 90% of the restaurants I have been to in Montreal had bilingual menus. If I went to Laval, or to the Laurentians as I did over the summer, I expect to see French only menus. But in Montreal it is not the norm.

As for the other commentary I would suggest you read some of my other reviews in the course of this thread. I take the good with the bad.

you are right but dont forget the menu dont have to be bilingual So when you find one that is not you should not make a big deal about it
