Some friends were staying in an apartment at 1160 St Mathieu last weekend and the little depanneur in the building has these killer homemade sandwiches for only $5.75 and they are fresh and HUGE! Chicken, Pork and Fish. Did not try the fish but the other 2 were incredible and the value cannot be beat.

I have been to Reuben's and Dunn's however for Montreal smoked meat, only cause I didn't feel like doing the trek to the Plateau (St Laurent) and the wait.

Reubens has been my favorite restaurant for over a decade. But this time around, instead of going to Chez Cora (on Drummond), i decided to have breakfast at Reubens and kept going back for my bacon n' eggs. The place was quiet (i hate crowded restaurants!!), i was allowed to sit where i wanted, service was very quick, the food was very good, and the price was right (under $7 plus tip). Plus, it was close to the hotels i stayed at. I usually go to Chez Cora, but it's kind of chaotic in there due to it being full of people all the time & it's also noisy. Don't know if i'll go back for that reason.

When i'd stay at the Hyatt Regency, i'd sometimes eat breakfast at the food court. A&W had a very good priced bacon n' eggs. Most people who know me are aware that i'm not the type to enjoy spending time in restaurants very much. I usually prefer eating on the run, or getting there, eat & make a quick exit. I find eating in restaurants such a blatant waste of time and money. The only time i do it is when i'm travelling, but i usually will fill up my bar fridge with vegetables and other types of food if my room is supplied with one. The Hyatt is a great place for this since there is an IGA supermarket within the building.

There is a Five guys off the Thruway on Rt 3 in Plattsburgh

One of the things i promised myself prior to my last trip was not to go to Five Guys. I'm just plain addicted to the place, especially their fantastic burgers!

I hadn't eaten a hamburger in over 2 months. I had last had a hotdog while in Toronto a month ago as i couldn't resist the hotdog vendors who work around the Rogers Centre (i was in town to watch some baseball). I've been on a fitness craze over the past month-and-a-half or so and part of it is to eat properly and cut down drastically on the calories (no junk food, no pasta, fries, burgers, hotdogs, etc).

One night last week, i was walking to the Jazz Fest & as i walked towards Five Guys, i told myself to think of something else and not get tempted. As i passed the place, i was pleased with myself for not being tempted. I wasn't even hungry & had planned at getting something to eat at the Jazz Fest. However, less than 30 seconds later, i gave in, made a U-Turn, entered the place & ordered a burger. It was great!!!!

The next day, i was going to do the same thing & was heading towards Five Guys since i was starving. Then i got a call from a buddy who invited me to join him & another buddy of ours at The Keg. So i made a slight detour for Place Ville-Marie and once inside headed towards The Keg. I was saved!!!!

Needless to say, i didn't go back to Five Guys again. Damn i'm proud of myself!!!!

Talking of hamburgers .... never been to Five guys so I can't speak for myself ....

But I've discovered SmartBurger I don't know if that small chain is exclusive to Montreal

But they make amazing Premium burgers and their french fries are amazing too.

To me they outperform any other fast food restaurent as I see them more classy

If any any of you are interested the only one in DT is located on sherbrooke st near the Mcgill

Look behind you.
Talking of hamburgers ....

Love a good burger but usually only eat my own as most places suck, never tried 5 Guys but it is on my list now.
The Hooters in Calgary NE makes a surprisingly good burger, in house made ground beef paddies. I went to the Hooters in the south shore and it looks like they get their paddies shipped in from a goat farm in Haiti.

Best restaurant in Montreal is the room service at the Holiday Inn in Pointe Claire. It has nothing to do with the food, I can't even remember what I had but I had a beautiful girl from MSC with me and she served me my food while she was nude. What more can you ask for? lol

Hornee is right
The fries are great
Don't order the large though
It will take you 30 minutes to eat them

Fork & knife? ;) Dessert must come with that?

There is nothing amazing about the Five Guys burger itself. It is fresh ground beef, but don't even seasoned it at all (not even S&P). They have a very large assortment of toppings available which is actually what people like the most. Have it your way.

FG Fries are good since they are made from real potatoes on-site and not frozen fries.

Sure, FG is better than Mickey D's, BK, Wendy's, & Harveys, but not that special.

As far as MTL steak resto, FireGrill on Rue Stanley (short crawl from Chez Paree) is good for a moderate priced steak joint. Ever try it? Comparable to Le Keg.

What ever happened to Chez Mere Tucker? Their prime rib was good, but the salad bar was huge.

I agree with this 100%. I have gone to Five Guys and what they are is a notch above the fast food places listed, and a notch below most upscale burger places like iburger or Plan B Burger, which is my personal fave.

Speaking of which, I had to park on Metcalfe while Chercherfemmes was dealing with his SIM card fiasco which he ultimately fixed at the Apple store. While I was there I saw that iBurger's space was being renovated. I asked one of the construction workers if iBurger was closed or the space was being renovated. Unfortunately he was a unilingual Francophone and did not understand my question and could not answer it. Hopefully one of the locals can provide some further information updates on this development. I would be very disappointed if they left or went out of business, although this particular space, which is on Metcalfe south of St. Catherine Street next to a parking garage, is really not the best place to do business for a restaurant.

I happen to love McDonald's fries. They are the only fries i never eat with either ketchup or vinegar.

As for Firegrill Steakhouse, i nearly went there the other day when considering my options of which steakhouse to go to. But the place always seems empty when i happen to go buy, so i figured it may mean something.

Chez Mere Tucker....better known as "Mother Tucker's" in english Canada. I haven't heard anything about this place in decades. When i was in my early 20's, we used to refer to it as 'Mother Fucker's'. :D

I still prefer the Five Guys burger & not only because it's half the price of those overpriced places you just mentionned.

Another decent place to eat a burger was Cheeburger-Cheeburger, located in Les Courts Mont-Royal on Metcalfe. However, the fact they charged for every single condiment killed the downtown franchise once Five Guys opened up. Five Guys had the advantage in the fact they don't charge for condiments.

I wouldn't be surprised if it closed down. Locals won't support any burger chain that charges over $12 for any burger. With so many other (and better in my opinion) choices (and much cheaper) around Montreal, overpricing clients for just a stupid burger than you can cook on your own on a bbq for less than $2 can only work for so long.

The local tourism business makes its money mostly during the summer months from June untiil September. Any business that mostly depends on tourism revenue won't last long in the world of business unless that revenue flow is year-round.

Just my personal opinion I find Five Guys overpriced. A trio basically sets you back about 15$. For that genre of burger I would prefer Dilallo. I guess if you love FG, you love the free peanuts!! Lol

Another great option that I find underrated is Smart Burger on Sherbrooke and McGill College. Don't let the name fool you, it's not healthy!! Fresh meat and tasty combo of toppings. Option of beer battered fries with flavoured mayos or spicy onion scoops. You can complete the trio with a Stewarts Black Cherry. All for about 10$ before tax. My favourite is Bourbon street.

Getting hungry...

I ate a few times at FG. I admit, I was surprised the 1st time by the price of the trio (14$+). Their fries are comparable (and maybe even worse) to those of La belle province. FG still remains much better than Mac Donals/Burger King/Harvey's...I once read on Wikipedia that the fries of FG are one of the unhealthiest fries in North Amarica. Maybe that statement is still there. I still eat at FG and Mac Donald's with moderation though. It is like these guys put something addictive in your food to keep you coming back, as what they serve is far from being tasty.

Did you guys try any of the food trucks yet?

Doc. U should give FireGrill a try. Not fantastic but as I said about same as Keg. Hope u didn't go to Mr. Steak next to Downtown SC. Yuck.

My first visits to Mother T was actually in Ottawa in Byward Mkt. But never heard the MF nickname.

I was expecting to do the BBQ 3 some last weekend, but I only got 2 done

!. I went again to Blackstrap BBQ in Verdun
I had the brisket sandwich which seriously was close to the best BBQ sandwich I ever had. I didnt like the vinegar based sauce, so I used the sweet BBQ sauce..It was divine
I also had the Deep fried mac and cheese. It was two (2x2) squares... So delicious, and so expensive ( $4 )
http://media-cdn.tripadvisor.com/media/photo-s/04/ac/74/b3/blackstrap-bbq.jpg ( not my picture )

2. I went again to Triple Crowne Dinette on Clark by Little Italy to remedy a fuck up from last year
I didnt listen and ordered a trio of 3 things I hate..Some cold sausage/pate' thingie, with cold pimento cheese and pickled asparagus YUKK

Well, this time I ordered the " Big Nasty "
It was a homemade Southern buttermilk biscuit with the best piece of fried chicken between the slices, with melted cheese and brown gravy

FANTASTIC

I also had a homemade fresh chili/ blackberry syrup soda Miam !!

Bon appetit
