Finally I'd like to promote a web site I recently found for restaurant reviews - its www.restomontreal.ca - this is the best restauarnt site that I've found for Montreal. Organization-wise, its as good as many of the good US city review web sites. For various reasons, web sites for Montreal nightlife are pathetic at best. Fred Z. should take a crack starting such a site - there's such a need and it wouldn't be hard to come up with something better that MontrealPlus. Anyway do check out www.restomontreal.ca and write a few reviews. We really need a good functional restaurant site in Montreal and some competition to kick Bell Canada's ass.

I should mention there is one other good review site which the Voir Magazine restauarant guide online at www.voir.ca/restos. It has lots of reviews but be warned that its about 100% in french. Range of restaurants is not as great as RestoMontreal but reviews are more abundant for now.

Check out http://www.montrealfood.com/ for restaurant reviews and other food related info. What I do not like about restomontreal and other sites of it's kind is that they sell advertising to restaurants as well as web sites. I also don't trust it when the only reviews are provided by readers. You end up getting some glowing reviews from friends, family and employees of the establishments which skews the results. I find that while Montrealfood may not update very often, their reviews are fair and interesting to read. Just my 2 cents.

I am not a big fan of smoked meat either. To me it is nothing more than glorified corned beef, although the method of preparation differs (smoking as opposed to boiling). As I have previously discussed, I made such a comment at Schwartz's and it got me in big trouble.

I think the best steak I had in Montreal was at Moishes, although the ambience in that place is non-existent. According to Stripper Lover it is the best steak in Montreal, and based on my own experience I have no reason to dispute that.

I agree Moishes is my favorite as well (ambience could use some work).

I almost forgot, if there are any Italian food lovers out there you have to try Roberto's at 2221 Belanger - the food it out of this world - not trendy, not overpriced, not the best location... It's not downtown (maybe a $15 cab ride), they have a pretty decent website (menu included).

Judge69,

There is also Pizzaria Napoletana 189 Dante (514-276-8226) - it's on the northwest corner of Dante & De Gaspe.

Great, now I'm really starving for Italian food.:D Looks very good and I'll have to try this place really soon.

Has anyone tried La Milsa on Bishop? Looking at the menu it seems to be a great place for a bunch of really hungry guys to check out.

I hate Schwartz's smokemeat.I find it to dry.BUT their steaks. It's my 2nd favorite place to have a steak.(1st>my own steak).

I know go to Abbie's for their steak on the west Island..Same smokemeat and steaks..same menu..There is a relationship between Schwartz and Abbie's.I believe father and son.Not 100% sure.

Father = Main Deli,Son on West Island = Abbie's,other son on Ile Perot =
Smoke Meat Pete.None of the three are connected to Schwartz.

I did use that site as well and like it because its sort of like your buddies giving reviews. However, the choice of restaurants reviewed is pretty limited. While its true that RestoMontreal is ad supported (like MERB), there are 2 things I liked about it. First, its easy to find a restaurant based on category, location and type. These are not review-based things so its a legit search engine for restaurants in Montreal. Second, I spent a fair amount of time reading the reviews there since I'm always looking for something new. You can look up reviews based on reviewers and there are a few regulars who write a lot of reviews. Based on a few years of reading MERB and Canbest, I can say that they are legit reviewers. In fact there is one reviewer who I thought may be a MERB member based on the style of writing.

I have one last recommendation which is En Route Magazine, the Air Canada in-flight magazine (a great read in its own right) publishes it list of 10 best new restaurants in Canada in the November issue. They also publish the articles on their web site at www.enroutemag.com. Theres always a handful of Montreal restaurants. This year the #1 and #3 picks are Montreal's Garcon! (Sherbrooke St. W) and Le Club Chasse et Peche (Old Montreal) - both on my to do list. I'll provide reviews when I get to them.

Steak is like my next favorite thing to sex so this place is like heaven to me. I went back for my third visit this last week and was amazed yet again at the quality of the food, service, and atmosphere, this place hasn't skipped a beat since last June. Had the prime rib this time which is slow cooked in the oven for many hours in a select blend of spices and is amazingly tender. Had it medium rare and it comes with a Port wine reduction that is out of this world delicious! Garlic mashed and Steak Cut onion rings on the side and I was a walking advertisement for bad breath. Woe to any Sp who sees someone after eating this meal. Reminded me of EB's story about getting "kojaxed" at his favorite Souvliaki stand before seeing an Sp and then having her turn her nose away at the odor!

On a funny note we had two humourous incidents happen this time. First of all we discovered that our waiter Fred is a red blooded fellow who likes to watch the ladies as we caught him gawking at a pretty young things derriere who was sitting next to us which we called him on and got a good laugh as he replied something to the effect of "I saw you looking too."

In addition we had a plan this time around to say no to anything the waiter said in reference to menu items except for what we were specifically ordering for dinner. In other words no extras thank you. We decided to do this because the last time we were there we had a waiter who bamboozled us by coming up to the table while we were being served appetizers (Jumbo Shrimp and Lobster Tails) and describing several different menu items to us which were on the menu and asking us if they sounded good. Of course we agreed with him that they sounded good, everything sounds good, but we never ordered any of them. However he took our agreement that the items sounded good the same as if we had ordered the item so we got about $50 worth of things we didn't really want when our steaks were served. Hey we enjoyed two of the three sides so no real harm done.

But this time we figured why bother, we couldn't finish it all anyway so lets just say NO to anything he says to us after we place our order. Well Fred takes our orders and one of my friends orders a side of Garlic mashed which we plan on sharing with dinner. I'm last so he asks me if I want Garlic Mashed or a Caesar salad to which I say "NO" shaking my head at the same time so there can be no confusion. He asks if I am sure and I say "NO", he says "your not sure?" He looks at my friend who isn't saying anything and says do you want Garlic mashed and we both say "NO" we are going to share so he says then "do you want me to take off his order for Garlic mashed?" looking at my friend to which we both reply "NO... we will share his order" to which he says, now looking at me, "so you don't want Garlic mashed even though your dinner comes with it but you want a side order?" looking at my friend. We look at each other and say "OH...sure, if it comes with it." To which he replies "so two orders of Garlic mashed" which we reply "Yes!"
Hallelujah! :p

Le Milsa

it's a brazilian steakhouse, their special is all you can eat grilled meat(~$25)
if you are a show-me-the-beef type of guy you certainly like it.
no fancy dishes, but their vriaty of very well grilled meat is impressive.

Judge 69,

I have heard about this place and I suspect that my patience would not have been much better than yours. When I go out to eat I don't like to be teased. I have been to some dim sum restaurants where you get this kind of service, and if you are very hungry it can be frustrating. I agree it is best to go at a slower time, but the flip side is that the kitchen usually adjusts culinary preparation speed (CPS) according to the number of customers seated in the dining room.

Thanks for the info on Le Milsa guys. I've been wanting to check the place out but none of my friends have been willing to try it. Seems to be a place to go if you're not in a rush. My brother went there a while ago, when it first opened, and said he had to beg them to stop bringing food over. Must have been a slow night:p

What a freakin annoying place with arrogant assholes for waiters. Never again for me.

Doesn't Ted Bird's, from CHOM, wife work there? She's a fox and it may be worth the trip just to see her up close and bug her about her hubby.

Nooky is right many Montreal restaurant get their staff from a place call hotel d'hotellerie where they do learn everything from setting up table to flambée choice of wine etc. etc Now if you want a good place Les Halles on Crescent st. Not for everyone Fancy place good meat a wine cellar to die for expensive no if you love food Bad place if you value quantity over quality if you expect 30 minutes for lunch stay away Another place but in Quebec look for the Laurie Raphael That place is one of the best in my book and the owner a genius in a kitchen
