Cargo, Board Stiff, maxhard, Judge 69 and others,

Thanks for your contributions to this thread. I value highly what the locals have to say and I am looking forward to trying some of the restaurants you have mentioned.

Let's get the fight going for the Title Bout of Portugese Chicken.

.

Coco Rico is so so... a bit dry.
The Portugese Chicken spot with the best reputation is the one on the corner of laurier and clark. You have to order ahead of time to pick up a full chicken.

Taste of an Island

Mauritius Island :) Give it a try then tell me .... There are I think 2 restaurants that offer the great Mauritian mixture of Indian, Chinese, Arabic, Creole and European all mix in one flavour ..... the Islander ! I've been to one of them in verdun and there is another one on St-Laurent, just south of Prince Arthur. Damn, can't remember the names. Will call my buddy & report back with names. Different atmosphere from the usual smoked beef, pizza, steak, etc ... .

I went to visit this country a last year and enjoyed very much their food & of course beaches.

Lawless-

Horse meat should only be fed to dogs, and that is atrocious! I guess Mr. Steer felt that their customers were as good as dogs and should be fed as such.

Best Hamburger

Dilallo's Buck Burger. There is no comparison with any other burger.
Best fries... a little place on Wellington St in Verdun called Rex Pizza. They make them the real way, not in canolla oil.

About hambuger

Guys,

I stick with my best hambuger and i think you should try the two place i recommand to you. It's different from burger like Dilallo and Dic Ann's. It's a full plate burger with more fancy dressing.

Best regards

EB,

Horse meat is not that bad. It's pretty similar to beef and very lean. Now that meat is more tender than before when i was told it was almost comparable with rubber. You should try once. We can found horse meat in many groceries now.

Cargo,

Horse meat is the chief ingredient in most dog food. Or as you say in French, cuisine de chien. I give it to my dog, but for me I ask, "where's the beef?" Let the dogs eat horsemeat, we humans can eat a little better.

As far as burgers go...anything is better than McDonald's, Harvey's and Burger King. And the original Dilallo's on Allard is still great...lousy fries though.

I'll pass on the horse meat but I love Bison and Ostrich, (yeah I know it's a bird but it's more like steak), is also very good.

Thai

On the corner of Cote-des-Neiges and Cote-Ste-Catherine.
Great Thai on second floor, on North-East corner (same side a Jewish General).

This place serves authentic, 4 star quality, but at a 2 star price.

So here's my reviews...
#1) Moishe's: go at least once a year, great service, wine, and THE BEST STEAK!
#2) Globe: See and be seen, unless you don't want to be seen...
#3) Kaizen: Some very good sushi, a little way from the main, so if you're the nervous type, probably a better bet.
#4) Lesters: for smoked meat, it can't be beat...had some today for dinner in fact.
#5) Lotte Furama: okay, maybe not for a date, but the best Dim Sum I've ever had, and my asian friends love it too.

I eat out almost every day for some meal, so I know all the good joints...I had to limit myself here...

Recent Reviews

Here are restaurant reviews from my recent trip:

Latini (Rene Levesque, across from the Hyatt) - this HDH Italian restaurant specializing in pasta and seafood was recommended by several friends, so I figured I would give it a try. I couldn’t read the menu and basically had to have the waiter translate everything on it. I finally settled on an entree consisting of a thin spaghetti with a tomato sauce and porcini mushrooms. It was very flavorful, although there was an upsetting moment when the head waiter second guessed my decision to put grated cheese on the pasta. If I am paying over $30 for a plate of pasta, I’ll eat it any way I like, and the guy should have just shut his mouth, gone to the kitchen and gotten the cheese! If I wanted ketchup on it, he should have gotten that too. The highlight of the meal was dessert, a flambeed creme brulee with fresh fruit that was mouth wateringly delicious. EB’s Value Grade: B+

Hong Kong (St. Laurent, Chinatown) - I had dinner here with Stripper Lover. I had eaten here once before years ago, and did not remember it being anything special. However, this proved to be the most pleasant surprise of the trip. Stripper Lover, who is a notoriously fussy/nitpicky guy to eat with, got his usual fried noodles and vegetables and I had the wonton soup and Beef with Peking Sauce. The soup came in a very large bowl, with a broth that was very tasty and about 12 stuffed wonton wrappers. Service was a bit slow for SL’s tastes. EB’s Value Grade: B+

Le Orchidee De Chine (Peel, near the Metro Station) - I have eaten here at least a dozen times and my most recent meal was the most disappointing I have had here. I sampled the crispy duck in pancake, lamb dumplings, spring rolls and crab and asparagus soup. Only the crispy duck in pancake met expectations. EB’s Value Grade: C

Keung Kee (70 de la Gauchitiere, Chinatown) - This restaurant serving authentic Cantonese cuisine was recommended to me by a merchant I did business with in Chinatown. I also vaguely remember Board Stiff having good things to say about it on the Boards. When I arrived for dinner, the place was packed and I was the only caucasian in the house. In a place like this one should avoid the temptation to order westernized Chinese food. However, after an appetizer consisting of pork soup, I gave in to the temptation and ordered Orange Beef, which was nevertheless very good. I will repeat. EB’s Value Grade: B+.

Basha (Complex Desjardins Food Court) - Ate here twice during my recent trip, and many times in the past. Most recently sampled the shish taouk sandwich and the vegetarian sandwich. The only issue was that the eggplants they use in the vegetarian sandwich are swimming in oil, and someone needs to inform Mr. Basha that when you cook eggplants in oil, they soak it up like a sponge. EB’s Value Grade: B-

Mexican Joint (Complex Desjardins Foor Court) - I can’t recall the name of this place but I recently sampled their Steak Fajitas Sandwich special, which is served with fried rice, salad and a fountain drink all for $8.85!!!!!!!!!!!! The only issue is that I asked them to put hot sauce on the sandwich and it has to be the most weak-ass, wussy hot sauce I have ever eaten. If the operator of this restaurant is reading this: do yourself a favor and go buy some Emeril’s “Kick It Up” Red Hot Sauce because that weak shit you are serving really needs to be kicked up about 5 notches. Bring it strong, or don’t bring it! EB’s Value Grade: B-

Hotel Bonaparte (Old Montreal) - Had breakfast here with Stripper Lover. Make sure you get here before 10:00 a.m., which is when the kitchen closes. Very limited menu but a nice breakfast. The fussy Stripper Lover was unimpressed. EB’s Value Grade: B

Thursday’s (Crescent Street) - Had lunch here with Stripper Lover. Last time I was here was over the summer when I had lunch with Breadman and DonnyB, and I fondly recalled the Cote d’Azur salad which was very good. I ordered it again, and it was not as good as I had remembered. The dressing was basically tasteless. EB’s Value Grade: C

There is different category in horse meat as there is different horse breeding (racing, farm animal or consumption). Of course, the one destinate to human is different that the one for dog food.

Recent Downtown Eat outs

Since I live here but not downtown, when I do go there to eat, its like being from out of town and almost as much fun. I had 3 recent experiences, 2 so-so and one good discovery. First, the bad news - I'll keep them short:

Med Grill (Mediterano) on St. Laurent - used to be the place to be, great restaurant with imaginative menu, service and ambiance. Went back recently and was so disappointed. It now becomes a lounge bar after 10PM and caters to wealthy 20 somethings who like to drink colored water in martini glasses. Music was too loud and the waiters were too young and clueless on how to serve a meal in a restaurant of Med's self-agrandized reputation. Food was very good, but given the prices, poor service and ambiance with a pretty boring menu kill what used to be one of the best in Montreal. Supper for 2 with one bottle of wine between 4 and no dessert or coffee: $180!!! Not recommended. (Note: Med's owners also own the amazing Cavali on Peel who have the hottest waitresses in town)

Wienstein and Gavinos, Crescent - been here a few times but never with GF. From this perspective, W&G is a poor GF date restaurant. In fact the food is barely average as is the wine list. Service is OK, and the ambiance is noisy. Its kinda like eating at Winnies across the street while the bar is in full swing. The biggest issue - very pricey. 24$ for Seafood linguini - nuff said!

Aleaxandre Cafe, Peel - this was the discovery for lunch. the lower floor is a Parisian Cafe and it feels it. The service was impeccable and the menu was Cafe-style. I had the best calf's liver and onions with a nice glass of red wine. Had pickled cod to start -amazing. GF was equally impressed with warm goat cheese salad. Overall great experince. It was a little pricey but the food+service+ambiance all added up.
(Note: there's an english-style pub on the 2nd floor)

Finally I'd like to promote a web site I recently found for restaurant reviews - its www.restomontreal.ca - this is the best restauarnt site that I've found for Montreal. Organization-wise, its as good as many of the good US city review web sites. For various reasons, web sites for Montreal nightlife are pathetic at best. Fred Z. should take a crack starting such a site - there's such a need and it wouldn't be hard to come up with something better that MontrealPlus. Anyway do check out www.restomontreal.ca and write a few reviews. We really need a good functional restaurant site in Montreal and some competition to kick Bell Canada's ass.

I should mention there is one other good review site which the Voir Magazine restauarant guide online at www.voir.ca/restos. It has lots of reviews but be warned that its about 100% in french. Range of restaurants is not as great as RestoMontreal but reviews are more abundant for now.

I got sick from the food at med. definitely not a legitimate restaurant, but it's on the right corner. Cavalli is pretty good though.

The steak at Schwartz's is the most satisfying meal in town to me.
