I'm starting to worry about bardeco. They seem to be expanding all over the place and that's not always a good sign for the quality. They opened one in Ville Emard in what used to be a Lafleur's. Not exactly the same quality place they have in Lachine.

Personally I prefer to go to a popular local pizza spot over any chain resto. This is Montreal after all and there is no reason to settle for mass produced clone restaurants like Pizza hut or Domino's and others when there are so many great local places with better pizzas at better prices.

Taska?

Yesterday I met a few merbites for dinner; somehow I thought I had invited Techman, but it looks now that I did not; sorry about that, Techman.

First off I have to apologize for being late; that added a damper to what the rain was already providing. You think it's not possible for Roland to be mad at me ? Think again! He was fit to be tied! I eyed his rather powerful maw eying my puny left shoulder, and could not think fast enough for a good excuse, so I told him the truth instead; it worked ! Sorry again.

Met Korbel briefly; made him late too. He looked like he was in an alternate dimension, and he soon took off.

So there we were: Spidey, Spiffy, Roland, and I, looking for a place to eat. Spiffy said he knew a good Portuguese place a couple of blocks away. After I had hobbled for a good 6 of Spiffy`s couple of blocks (I use a cane, you know), we came across another Portuguese resto. Thinking ``Any Port in a Storm``, we went in. Spiffy was delighted as the waiters were dressed like him; thankfully people have faces; we have to be thankful for small mercies.

I think the place was called Taska. Go there if you want to find out how Paella should NOT be cooked; on second thoughts, just don`t go there. Give it a miss. Walk on by ! The Sangria was good, though, it being the only highlight.

Nice seeing you again guys.

Oh, on the way back Roland and I ran the gauntlet of SPCUM closing the streets of Montreal. And foolish me, I thought they never rolled up your sidewalks.

Europea Espace Boutique

Earlier this week, before leaving Montreal, I decided to check out Europea's boutique in Old Montreal. Located at 33 Notre Dame West, it is a small operation selling foodstuff.

They have what appears to be a good lunchtime take-out deal where for $9.50 you get a sandwich, pastry, and drink. When I was there at 11 am, they already had a bunch of shopping bags containing lunch boxes lined up. The food in the counter itself looked fresh and tasty.

The OTHER counter was what I was there for. I picked up a few small cakes to try out at home. They were good, if unexceptional. I also picked up some macarons, those ethereal things that just melt in the mouth; they were superb.

I also noticed some "Cannelées", small cakes that appeared to be burnt, but were quite nice tasting, if a bit too brown and chewy; they should be golden. I have molds for them, but have never used them, so was curious about them. If anyone else tries them, please post your impressions here.

They also carry some chocolate-based massage products. I was travelling alone, and had no plans to massage and taste, so did not buy any of the stuff.

Wanna suggest a place on bernard street. It's calles enfant terrible, I took a regular of mine there after I received the link by email. I even thaught that it was Oli K who was behind this site but he didn't answer me yet http://30sr30s.blogspot.com

Anyway it was a really nice experience and we befriended the manager there called miguel. it's a bistro style place with a terrasse. We sat on the terrasse and had a verry pleasant meal and ended up spending 6 hours on the terrasse watching beautiful women walking by. My date was so horny that she almost conviced a young lady to join us for a little trio. Unfortunately I probably was to old for her and she wasn't drunk enough to try an old geezer like me.:D

I was in Montreal during the Jazz festival with a friend who was visiting the city for the first time. My friend insisted on two things, (1) we try a crepe restaurant, and (2) we go for dim sum in Chinatown at a resto of my choosing. Here are the results of our excursions:

Chez Suzette (St. Paul, Old Montreal) - We were staying at the Hotel Intercontinental, and I noticed this apparently small crepe specialty shop in Old Montreal. I decided after examining the menu that since crepes were the only thing on it, they must be specialists. So I took my friend here. We got there in the late morning and I noticed it's actually not such a small place. There are actually 3 floors, and you can get tables at the windows facing St. Paul on each of the 3 floors. We got a table at the window on the 1st floor. My friend ordered a lunch crepe that had bacon, avocado and melted cheese (and sour cream) if I recall correctly, while I got a breakfast or dessert crepe that had fresh fruit in it drizzled with maple syrup. I must say it was fantastic, and far better than the crepes being served at Chez Cora. The Chez Suzette Crepes are made from a sweeter, pancake-like batter to my taste buds. My friend and I both immensely enjoyed our meal here.

Ruby Rouge (Clark Street, Chinatown) I have been going here for years and I have previously reviewed it at least 3 times in this thread. The meal I had here was as good or better than any of the other 8 or 9 times I had eaten here previously going back to 2002. Of particular note was the spring rolls, which were very tasty if not piping hot (not a reasonable expectation at any dim sum restaurant), and the shrimp and vegetable dumplings. I just this past week ate dim sum at one of the more popular places in Manhattan (Jing Fong), and Ruby Rouge is better. And the service is at RR excellent based on my fairly significant experience having eaten dim sum at all the major places in New York, Boston and San Francisco; the waiter actually was politely offended when I tried to go to the cash register myself rather than let her take my check to tally up the bill and return for payment. By the ways, my friend and I ate like pigs and our bill, including tax, came to $17.00.

Winnie's (Crescent Street) - I dragged my friend here, telling him it was the best burger on Crescent Street. And it still is. The waiter, who was gay, allowed me to sweet talk him into cooking my burger medium rare. I played the role of the tormented and frustrated tourist in true Drama King fashion, and it worked. If you act like a Drama King in a polite way with gay waiters, I found that it always works because almost all of them are really into the theater. However I knew he risked his job by getting that burger cooked medium rare, so I tipped him well. My friend order a soup which was called Mexican vegetable soup or something like that, which was greenish and looked blended, and a Caesar Salad. He said that the soup was bland but the salad was very good.

Beijing (Chinatown) - My friend wanted to go back to Chinatown for more Chinese, so I told him this is the place for the traditional sit down Chinese meal. Excellent as usual. I have never been to this restaurant when it wasn't full on Thursday, Friday or Saturday nights. Also, I never had a bad meal here.

We ate at a few other places but the above were the standouts. My friend told me he thought Chez Suzette and Ruby Rouge were our 2 best meals on the 5 day trip. I tend to agree.

After having tried both places on several occasions, my vote for the best burger i've tasted so far in Montreal goes to:

HARD ROCK CAFE

Type of burger: HRC Burger

I've also tried it in Ottawa & in Toronto and they're practically the same. The second best burger i've had was at Harvey's. They sure know how to make a great burger!

Winnie's vs. HRC

Hard Rock will not cook the burgers medium rare whereas the gay waiter at Winnies was persuaded to talk the Chef into doing it. For my own taste the HRC cooks their burgers too well when you ask it to be done as rare as possible, and mainly for this reason I give Winnies the edge. Even other times when I did ask "rare as you can make it", my burger was cooked closer to order at Winnies than at HRC. HRC is very strict about cooking the shit out of their burgers, and when I raised the issue there, they told me they have to do it. I think I already discussed that earlier in this thread. I think HRC may have more choices as far as different kinds of burgers. But the Winnies burger is better suited to my taste, they will cook it to my order or at least close, and also they will cook it with swiss cheese which some places will not do.

Winnies' fries are not very good though.

I would agree Winnies and HRC are the top 2 burger purveyors on Crescent Street. Claddaghs makes a disgusting burger and Hurley's is another place that cooks the bejesus out of their burgers even more than HRC. Thursday's is mediocre at best. I also had the burgers at Mr. Steer and Baton Rouge and I rate both below Winnies and HRC.

I've been to that place over 100 times & i've yet to try their burgers.

EagerBeaver: I do not much like meat, but there is this resto called la Paryse that is maybe what you are looking for (if you are still on quest to find best burger). I go there a few times a year for last ten years to order my best hamburger in the world: tofu burger. But most times friends eat real hamburger (meat) and it is very known that la Paryse makes the best one (and I add, the best fries). Thanks for that link. If they are cooking their burgers medium rare, that means they must be grinding their meat in house. I am aware of one other place that does this: Mechant Bouef in Old Montreal, although they are somewhat overpriced and their burgers are massive. They will also cook a burger as rare as you like, and from my understanding they get a pass because they grind their meat in house (which they confirmed when I asked them). The places on Crescent Street are all using pre-ground meat.

I do not know if they ground beef in the resto... I know you can get medium-rare (with pink inside). Next time I go I ask.

Ground beef is harder to keep safe than steaks because if contaminated by bacteria and then mixed into the meat you have higher risk of getting sick rather than for a steak where bacteria stays on the surface and is more easily killed by cooking.

Yes, I know there is many 'greatest burger' place :rolleyes: and now I tell you one and I don't even eat meat burger! I am not sure if she asks (or is asked 'quelle cuisson?') or if this is standard cooking (I think review suggest it is standard but I do not quite understand the sentence). I can say for sure that I have had many many tofu burger in my life and no place is better for that than la Paryse.

Now I am hungry for tofu burger!

I have seen people get very sick eating poorly prepared and cooked burgers and it isn't something to scoff at. Not that I follow my own advice as I routinely eat raw hamburger meat with salt and pepper when preparing burgers at home.

As far as mburger's claims go, considering that one of the owners is also one of the owners of Moishe's, I think their claim of serving the best burger in town could be worth investigating.

Personally I like Dilallo's and their Buckburger. They've been in business since 1929 so they must be doing something right. Don't expect to get one medium rare though as I don't think it would be possible to even cook it that way. It's not your average hamburger.

"...Besides, on my last visit, my "medium" cooked burger was tepid and raw in the middle-- a real health no no, especially in the summertime."
