yea a real nail biter , maybe they’re better off playing without their coach from now on ..... but they are still out of the playoffs even with this impressive win .... it’s the other NY team that’s been consistently winning and they currently look really good as a long shot dark horse

I expected more from the Flyers this year , and although there is still time to get in if they get streaky it won’t amount to much as they look fundamentally flawed ... their goaltending was supposed to be good but it’s not

Toronto is another team that’s struggling ,,, they are just a 0.500 team in their last 10 games

The Flyers have had goaltending problems seemingly for 30 years. Does anyone remember around 8-9 years ago they had a playoff series against the Penguins and they used 3 different goalies and ending up pulling and benching all 3 during the series? I think an NHL record number of goals were scored in that playoff series. It was like the worst goaltending in NHL playoff history and I remember watching as one goalie after the other was shelled and pulled. I actually work with a hardcore Flyers fan who is originally from Philadelphia who talks about the "good old days" of Bernie Parent and Pelle Lindbergh and Ronnie Hexthall. Those days are long past. They just haven't figured out the goaltending aspect of hockey since then.

you’re analysis of the Flyers goaltending woes is way much better than my “ fundamentally flawed “ bs hockey knowledge which is minimal.... but I do remember Ron Hextall in his glory days , a real tough son of a bitch ... but now this Carter guy is supposed to be one of the top goalies in the league but his clearly not playing like one EB ... either he is overrated or the guys in front of him are not doing their part

Church,

Carter Hart is a 22 year old goalie who is viewed as a good prospect but like other young goalies, he has struggled and been inconsistent. Earlier this year he gave up 4 or more goals in 3 straight games, including 6 and 7 to the Bruins, and broke his stick and stormed off the ice after one of those losses, behavior that was called unprofessional.

22 years old is very young to be thrust into starting in the NHL and his development is being force fed. My opinion on goalies generally is that with a few exceptions, they generally play their best after years of development and on the north side of 30. Goalies are like young talented MLB starting pitchers, who take years to learn how to refine their pitches, their command of the strike zone, and their general understanding of what pitches to throw in what counts to what hitters. Similarly with younger goalies, their weaknesses are quickly learned and exposed and they have to work with their coaches to adjust their techniques to eliminate repeated goals, for example on the stick side or through the wickets. Scouting reports tell players where to shoot and goalies like Hart have to make adjustments or they find themselves back in the minor leagues of hockey.

Take Marc Andre Fleury, at age 36 he is having the best season of his career. He was a highly, highly touted and highly drafted young goalie prospect who for years was viewed as a major disappointment. He was solid, but not a star. Only since he went to Vegas has he taken his game up a notch and he was by then well into his 30s. Tim Thomas had his best years in his 30s and same with Dominik Hasek, one of the great goalies in NHL history. Very rarely do you see anyone dominate from age 22. Carter Hart in my opinion may be a very good goalie in 5 years but the Flyers, due to their severe goalie problems, force fed this kid who was not ready and now he is having to deal with the shock of adversity, 9 goal games, etc., and either it will toughen him up and make him better or not. I suspect he is not done taking his lumps and he will not emerge as a top and consistent goalie for another 5 years. And in the meantime the Flyers aren't going anywhere and the Rangers may soon overtake them. In fact I predict the Rangers will overtake them.

Another guy who was highly drafted and highly touted was Semyan Varlamov. He is now 32 and only recently became a highly effective and consistent goalie. In the playoffs last year he was incredible and played his best hockey. But he has been around in the NHL since he was 20. He played the best hockey of his career last year and this year.

Look behind you.
Quite the debut for Jamie Drysdsle with Anaheim, one goal and an assist with 3 SOG and +2.

Gaby I was shocked by the refs statement and also shocked by the swift and strong punishment by the NHL. But I understand it and you can't have one ref undermining the credibility of all with such statements. As a 21 year veteran NHL referee, Peel should have known better.

Yep.....as a veteran perhaps he should have received a warning BUT i guess the NHL decided to act this way to make sure all the refs get the message very clearly......

Gaby,

Here is the hot Mike feed, in which you can clearly hear (at 0:17) Peel saying, "it was not much, but I wanted to get a fucking penalty against Nashville early":
Although I was initially surprised by the permanent ban, if you really think about it, how could they have let him ref any Predator games after this? What if he had done the same to the Habs? Given the penalties that the Habs have amassed this season, if he had said the same about Montreal, would you have wanted to see him anywhere near a Habs game again?

The Rangers peppered Carter Hart and the Flyers with another 8 goals tonight, and the Rangers have now scored 17 goals in their last 2 games against Hart and the Flyers. Zibanejad has scored another hat trick tonight- his second straight against the Flyers- while Buchnevich has added 2 goals for a second straight game vs. the Flyers.

More importantly the Rangers are now tied with the Flyers in the standings after this latest beatdown.

Carter Hart save % tonight was a moose ball sucking .545, 5 goals allowed on 11 shots and then relieved of his goaltending duties.

Meanwhile, Buffalo winless streak is now 16 after losing to the Penguins again.
