On the rare occasions when he writes on the subject, Dan Gardner is just about the only mainstream columnist who seems to have done enough real research to understand the business. His Friday column related to the Spitzer situation, but also pointed out that Victor Malarek and a couple of U.S. moralist writers are full of crap when claim trafficking increases if the business is legal.

...They have empirical evidence to prove it, they say. Lots of statistics and studies and citations. It`s all very scientific.
Or at least it seems so to the gullible...

I`ve done extensive research on prostitution in the Netherlands and I`ve never heard of these studies anywhere but Malarek`s book.
2007 Merb thread on Malarek

BTW - from the Dan Gardner column - "Farley is an anti-pornography and anti-prostitution activist".
Anti-pornography activist? How quaint. How`s that battle going? Been successful in shutting down the porn industry? What century is this?

The Netherlands government shut down a lot of brothels about a year ago for money laundering and links to organized crime, which often involves human trafficking. It does happen in the Netherlands:

And even a John who frequents the brothels there admits as much:

Funny ref on Mirror's cover

I noticed a small character note below the logo on last week's Mirror's cover: "NY Gov. see p.61"... where are the ads for escorts agencies.

Also "Client 9" tshirts are showing up on cafepress.com...

Some incredible news in the ongoing Spitzer saga in this morning's NY Post. The NY Post is reporting that former Republican "dirty tricks" hatchet man Roger Stone had his attorney write a letter to the FBI on November 19 - months before the FBI opened an investigation on Spitzer - to report that Spitzer was spending "tens of thousands" of dollars on HDH babes in Miami, Florida:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/03232008/news/regionalnews/eliot_tipster_a_gop_swinger_103165.htm

The report indicates that Spitzer always had sex with his black socks on. It appears that the FBI, though aware of Spitzer's hobbying activities, did not open an investigation based on this letter. It also appears that it is likely that when the FBI received the SAR from Spitzer's bank and opened an investigation, they immediately knew that the monies being tranferred were for HDH escorts and not to launder bribes, based on the info already provided months earlier by Stone.

In addition, the Post is also reporting that the feds offered former Emperor's Club escort Andrea Schwartz, who was facing criminal charges and deportation back to Brazil relating to her own agency being busted after she left EC, a deal in which Schwartz would get a green card and the deportation order would be rescinded if she testified against EC (and, potentially, Spitzer if he is charged). Schwartz refused the offer and was deported back to Brazil, but she is fielding million dollar offers from Playboy (see link contained within above article).

I suggested in an earlier post that much of the reason for the Bush Administration's electronic spying was not to stop terrorism but to get dirt on political opponents. This may have been the indirect result of that.

It might also explain why Democrats have not made any real effort to impeach Bush. He probably has files on many of them and would use them if a serious impeachment effort was begun.

Dude, that's just being paranoid. Loosen up the tin foil hat a bit.

From the article in the Asia Times I posted above:

"Bush, said Spitzer right in the headline, was the "predator lenders' partner in crime". The president, said Spitzer, was a fugitive from justice. And Spitzer was in Washington to launch a campaign to take on the Bush regime and the biggest financial powers on the planet. Spitzer wrote, "When history tells the story of the subprime lending crisis and recounts its devastating effects on the lives of so many innocent homeowners the Bush administration will not be judged favorably."

With that article, Spitzer may well have signed his own political death warrant. "

Well, funny you mention that. I'm old enough to remember the when Clintons took the FBI files of every republican member of congress to the oval office and started combing through them. That much did happen, though they never got very far with it once the story got out.

You said we need more Spitzers and less Bush’s. Didn’t Spritzer prosecute prostitution rings mercilessly? Doesn’t the hypocrisy bother you at all?

Spitzer Would Have Been Impeached

It appears that even if the Empire Club Scandal had not happened, Spitzer would have faced impeachment for his role in the "Dirty Tricks" scandal involving Joe Bruno:

http://www.nypost.com/seven/03292008/news/regionalnews/d_a__dubs_him_tricky_spitz_104003.htm

Here is the relevant excerpt:

At one point, Dopp (Spitzer aide) said he had warned the governor that Bruno "will be p- - - - -" if the records were released.

He said Spitzer angrily replied, "F- - - him! He's a piece of s- - -! Shove it up his ass with a red-hot poker!"

Dopp said that during the same conversation, Spitzer "turned a little red and he was drinking a cup of coffee and as he was saying it, he was like spitting a little bit. He was spitting mad."
