YVO, why get your undies in a knot like this? This is only a poll! Why tell Kobel his opinion is worth squat? Is yours worth more? You can't tell your opinion if somebody else's isn't worth anything. It only imply you're superior or you agree yours is also worthless.

read what I wrote carefully. Here' I'll reprint it to save your scrolling finger: "our opinions don't mean squat here"

What part of 'our' don't you understand? Don't put words in my mouth please, you might not like what I cram in between your lips.

I think this poll is far from useless!

Tell the class of what specific use it is.

Hey NP. Thanks for the quick retraction. We are all entitled to our respective opinions, and are lucky enough to live in places where we are free to express them. Some are better suited to state facts than others in certain instances, but that isn't what is at play here. And, of course, some opinions are better presented that others, but that doesn't make them better or more valid opinions, that makes them better argued.

Personally I think the Mods are doing a great job. check out usenet on google groups if you want to see unrestricted opinionizing.

Hello Justbob,

That's pretty precise. Generally I agree. Yet, I would not want the Mods to be pinned so strictly when each case may be different and will need adressing in proportion to the offences.

I agree there should be some sort of range involved to fit the offense. I just threw that out there for discussion purposes. Even a simple warning on a first minor offense might be considered.

As to the argument that "our opinions don't mean squat here", I'd like to know on what grounds one would come to such a definitive conclusion. I would hope that owner/moderators would be interested by what members have to say on this issue, and perhaps take these opinions into consideration. From personal experience, this is certainly not something unheard of on an internet forum.

Hello Justbob,

You can bet the Mods have seen this thread. I don't see it as a challenge to their authority, but I am sure there has been plenty of curiosity from the Mods as to how discussion on this issue is developing, and I would think they are considering how much weight they should give the opinions here. In my view only those who have voted for the first option would like to see the impact of the Mods greatly reduced by eliminating their most effective punitive device to maintain enough discipline. Otherwise I think there would be no control of the "bar room brawl" sort of atmosphere the board would quickly degenerate without bans.

You can see that few members think the board should be wide open to any sort of behavior that might encourage the worst in all of us. Nearly 53% at this point would like more defined parameters or limits on toleration for repetitive egregious offences. At the very least, the desire for stronger penalites is indicated clearly.

Well Mods, how do you see it?

Hmmmmm,

PS

Thanks to all so far for leaving individual personalities out of this thread...I sure LUV you guuuuuuuuys.

But a permanent ban can't do much about re-registering with new handle.

Personally, I can log-out, disconnect my internet, reconnect and log back in as somebody else, without Mods having any way to know or without using any anonymizer. Simply, ADSL doesn't keep the address when you disconnect. Even the scope might change. Mods could look for patterns but it's quite tedious. And after a permanent suspension, somebody re-registering with a different name would be almost possible to trace if waiting a week or 2. Unless the banned member revert back to his bad habits, tough luck to trace him!

Or often in a hotel, what shows is a single IP for the outside world. 2 members in same hotels could be considered as 1 with a duplicate handle.

After all, nobody shows ID to become a member!

Hmmm, 72 virgins? Mouth watering...

Besides the fact that spending the night with 72 girls/women who haven't the slightest clue what sex is about doesn't really sound like a hell of a lot of fun...if you went searching for 72 virgins in Quebec, you probably would have a hard time finding one older than 14.

Some say white grapes rather then virigins await the martyr... wouldn't that be a bummer!!!!

It has long been a staple of Islam that Muslim martyrs will go to paradise and marry 72 black-eyed virgins. But a growing body of rigorous scholarship on the Quran points to a less sensual paradise — and, more important, may offer a step away from fundamentalism and toward a reawakening of the Islamic world.
…The Quran is beautifully written, but often obscure. One reason is that the Arabic language was born as a written language with the Quran, and there’s growing evidence that many of the words were Syriac or Aramaic.
For example, the Quran says martyrs going to heaven will get “hur,” and the word was taken by early commentators to mean “virgins,” hence those 72 consorts. But in Aramaic, hur meant “white” and was commonly used to mean “white grapes.”
Some martyrs arriving in paradise may regard a bunch of grapes as a letdown1. But the scholar who pioneered this pathbreaking research, using the pseudonym Christoph Luxenberg for security reasons, noted in an e-mail interview that grapes made more sense in context because the Quran compares them to crystal and pearls, and because contemporary accounts have paradise abounding with fruit, especially white grapes.

Nobody should ever be banned for stating their opinions in a respectful, non-threatening manner. Schills will be found out and eventually ignored and thus lose interest in their perverse pursuits....play on words and the hobby! If you believe in permanent bans, then you are the type to believe in the death penalty...no, I don't want a discussion on that...lol 1, 3, and 5 year bans can be the same as a permanent ban true? As friend of mine who work in the field say, "It is the department of CORRECTIONS not PUNISHMENT" Just my 2 cents!

Hello TA,

Did you read the first post? We are not talking about banning respectful people just because they disagree. I can't see how you could begin to think this was the case. We are talking about persistent, highly insulting personal attacks far beyond any reasonable discourse. We are talking about those who use every avenue to pursue personal hatreds against others and violate the clear rules repeatedly. We are talking about those who get banned again and again for flagrant flaming of others. I don't generally believe in the death penalty, but I do believe there should be permanent bans for cases like the situations descrbed above. So you are WRONG about the correlation between banning and the death penalty with me.

Now beer me,

Korbel....One beer coming right up....lol I understand your point, but we must protect free speech at all cost, even if it is offensive and full of lies! Such rotten MERB members as you described will eventually be ignored, insulted and disappear like the playground bully! Screw that, lets go kick their ass....lol

Hello TA,

You are perfectly right about free speech which obviously does not include threats of any kind or flagrant continuous insults.

Thanks for the beer...glug, glug, glug, :D

This is a irrelevant anecdote but, on another board, I was once put on a 3-days infraction leave for abusive language. The post that got me to be banned contained a single word: "Phuket", a city located on a Thai island bearing the same name. The Mod thought I had mispelled "Fuck it"...

Unbannable ?

Hello my neighbors,

Here is my proposition for Merbites to vote on:

With somebody who contributed so much to the well being and entertainment for all Merbites of all ages, Merbites should have a class where anybody who belongs in there is unbannable.

Who is in that class ?

Number 1. New York!!!!!!:p
