Wow, what has happened to the best player in the world? Just checked and Crosby only has 5 goal and 15 points in 24 games so far this season  and is a minus 10? Unheard of for Sid the Kid. He is only 28 so it cant be age although he is in his 11th season already but has also missed a lot of games over the years with injuries. Has Ovechkin taken over as the the best player in the NHL once again? I think i would give the edge to Malkin or Kane/Toews over the Great 8 still.

Injuries indeed may have taken their toll and he's become an ordinary player. Kind of like Tiger Woods in golf.

Pascal Dupuis to retire due to medical condition

Pittsburgh Penguins forward Pascal Dupuis will no longer play hockey because of a medical condition related to blood clots, Dupuis and the team announced today.

Dupuis, 36, had played 18 games this season while taking blood thinners but experienced several recent medical incidents possibly related to his condition. He had to be removed from several games – most recently on December 1 at San Jose – and each time had to undergo a series of tests.

“Despite playing on a medical protocol that has worked for other players in the NHL, we feel that the risk of Pascal playing with his condition and the side effects of the tests to monitor him are just not in the best interest of his long-term health,” said Dr. Dharmesh Vyas, the Penguins’ team physician.

Dupuis has been placed on the injured reserve list, and the Penguins intend to place him on long-term injured reserve.

“It was very difficult for me to make this decision to have to step away from the game,” Dupuis said. “My wife and four children have always been my first priority, and playing with my condition has become a constant worry for all of us. I want to thank my teammates and the Penguins organization for their unwavering support during this difficult time.”

“I feel very badly for Pascal,” Penguins general manager Jim Rutherford said. “I’ve never seen a man more determined to play and more determined to help his team. Unfortunately, we’ve reached the point where it’s not in the best interest of his health to allow him to do that anymore.”

Dupuis was originally diagnosed with a blood clot in January 2014 shortly after suffering torn ligaments in his knee. He was on blood thinners for six months while also recovering from surgery and rehabilitating his knee.

He then was diagnosed with a blood clot in his lung in November 2014 and missed the remainder of the 2014-15 season while on blood thinners. He was cleared to work out and take contact in June 2015.

Dupuis played 871 NHL games over 15 seasons with the Penguins, Minnesota Wild, New York Rangers and Atlanta Thrashers, scoring 190 goals and 409 points. He was acquired by the Penguins in a February 26, 2008 trade with Atlanta and was part of Pittsburgh’s Stanley Cup championship team in 2009.

The 6-foot-1, 205-pound native of Laval, Quebec had two goals and two assists for four points in 18 games this season.

The Penguins will continue to pay Dupuis’ salary. He is in the third year of a four-year contract that pays him an average annual salary of $3.75 million.

I see that the Penguins are currently out of a playoffs spot. If they miss the playoffs, they get to keep their 2016 first-round pick, which was traded to the Leafs in the Kessel trade. So if they do wind up missing the playoffs, you know how i'll feel! Grrrrr.....

The Penguins finally fired Mike Johnston and replaced him with Mike Sullivan.

The writing was on the wall when the GM recently went public with his disagreement with his coach re: player personnel.

I simply get good scoops from a few insiders close to the league & i also have pretty good instincts. Want another good one? This ones comes from me only. Mike Johnston will not likely be coaching the Pens next season. Rutherford is waiting for the axe to fall on a current coach in order to replace Johnston with that coach.

As for Pens coach Mike Johnston, i'm still betting that he'll be the first coach to get axed this season.

I hate to say it, but i've been predicting Johnston's firing since last winter, and most recently in October.

Can someone explain to me why Sidney Crosby has sucked monkey balls this year? He isn't even in the top 50 in the league in scoring. I read that up until very recently there wasn't an injury issue. The Pittsburgh beat writers wrote that because the Penguins power play was so awfully disorganized, Crosby started squeezing the stick and panicking. And then it became a mental issue. He has never been the toughest player but he is 28 years old and is in his prime and should be leading the league in scoring. Instead he is now an average player and the Penguins are an average team. Is Crosby's spot on Team Canada in danger? Can he honestly be played on one of the top 3 lines?

If anyone had the answer, they'd be instantly hired by the Penguins. There were rumours earlier that he and former landlord Mario Lemieux (also the team co-owner) were privately feuding. They both denied the rumours. But who knows, maybe there's something to the rumours. There could be unknown personal issues also, who knows. Or maybe all the concussions he received over his hockey career have caught up to him. It's a big mystery. Pascal Dupuis' sudden retirement from hockey won't help either.

I don't know if it affects his spot next year with Team Canada. My guess is that it does. But i still think he'll be on the team.

I also think he might actually get traded either this season or next. If they could trade Gretzky, i guess anyone can get traded.

The only good thing about their crappy play this season is that they won't have to surrender their first-round pick to the Leafs if they miss the playoffs.

So....Go Pens Go!! :thumb:

Crosby is no longer the best player in hockey and it's questionable whether anyone would put him in the top 20 right now. Price is the best player now and doubt anyone would trade Kane or Tarasenko straight up for Crosby; certainly not Benn or Seguin or Stamkos or Tavares. Not even sure the Rangers would trade Rick Nash straight up for Crosby.

Crosby wasn't the best player in hockey for very long. Alex Ovechkin probably had more seasons than he had to be considered as the 'best in hockey'. Stamkos likely had this distinction a couple of years ago. Jonathan Toews last season or so. This season Jamie Benn is giving other contenders a run for their money. As for Carey Price being considered 'the best player in hockey', that comes out of Montreal.

Carey Price is a goaltender. Toronto's James Reimer even has better numbers than he does. But Carey Price plays for a very average team and the defensive style that team plays is a great asset to its goalie. The guy who replaced Price didn't lose a game for something like 6 games or so (i'd have to check) once Price went down and looked very good. People in Mtl were actually talking about maybe trading Price for a top scorer. I tell people: "Put Henrik Lundquist or Pekka Rhine with the habs, and they'll get the same praise Carey Price receives." What i'm saying is that a very good goalie can make himself look absolutely sensational on a team that can't score goals. But put that same goalie with a team that scores goals at an average pace or better, and he won't be as noticeable. Especially when that team plays less defensive hockey. More quality chances will come his way and his numbers will go up.

Don't get me wrong. I believe Carey Price is very good. Extremely good. But he's not THAT good. As i said earlier, the team he's on and the type of defensive style it plays makes any goalie look better than they really are. And the fact it's a team that is once again struggling to score goals, he looks even more important to the team's success.

Want to know who the habs miss the more? Brendan Gallagher. No one has stepped up to replace his constant presence in front of the net. The habs have shot many times, but the opposing goalies have been able to see the puck most of the time.

Now i've just learned that Toronto will get next year's first-rounder from the Pens should the Pens fail to make the playoffs this season. Whew!

Doc, how will the Leafs get Pitt's 1st rounder from the Pens if the Pens fail to make the playoffs?
