One thing to clarify, 95% of the a-hole that are rioting and not Habs fans they are just using the victory as an excuse to burn police cars and steel from the stores on Ste-Catherine street.

I just saw clips of the incidents on the news. Cops at the intersection of Crescent & Ste Catherine being thrown all kinds of objects including cans & garbage cans. Fights erupting between rioters & people trying to stop the nonsense. Several police cars being torched. Guess who's going to pay for those police cars? Yep, the taxpayer. Fuck#$@ idiots!!! I used to be against the use of tasers, now i'm starting to change my thinking about them!
Well said doc.Holliday stupid they have to be instead of celebrating the joy and the happiness .I really don't know if we deserve the cup ? imagine this only the quarter final .This stupidity will show all over the world and all I have to say shame on you bunch of trash.

Staged by hooligans

Doc Holliday said:
Yeah, right! I've heard this excuse for as long as i've been living. On another note, i just saw a few Habs fans on the news calling the rioters a bunch of imbeciles & one guy wearing a Habs sweater said that he's so embarrassed to be a Habs fan presently (this was taped after the game last night) that he feels like removing his sweater. Like i said, the idiot quotient among sports fans is higher among those who support the Habs. As a Habs fan myself, i just hope that i'm not considered to be part of that group!

What an embarrassment for Montreal!!! These disgracious incidents will probably be replayed all over North America today!

Doc

I agree this is another embarassement for Montreal. However, I saw a report that the people who started this were there specifcally to start this so-called riot. In fact, it appears to have been staged as the there were people there who were filming the rioters and were obviously together. None of the initial rioters appear to have been attending the game. Look for burning cop cars to show up on Youtube. Personally, I would like to see a video of these idiots being clubbed senseless by the cops. BTW, the real story here is what happened to so-called preparedness the cops claimed they had for such an event.

Rioting in Canada

Montreal has a history of riots: anti-conscription,St.Jean Baptiste, Police Strike in 1969, St.Leonard, various labour strikes, Maurice Richard in 1955,to name a few. Provincially you also had the Asbestos strike in 1949 amongst others.

Calgary has the "Red Mile" when the Flames are in the play-offs, Edmonton when the Oilers went to the finals had disturbances. Regina and Winnipeg had violent riots in the 1930's - labour.

Just a short list.

Disgusting....

Don't understand why wins are celebrated this way... and it certainly isn't limited to Montreal...

It simply isn't necessary. You don't see this after EB wins a ping pong tournament....

Do you always put everybody in the same bag?

Do you really imagine if 25 000 fans start rioting. Montreal would look like Bagdad!!!

It's alway the same. A few trouble maker start the shit and it catches on like frenzy on a few idiots.

When you hear of cocktails molotov, you know that it was planned.

No city is free of the kind of events.

The cops should maybe learn to be there but in a discreet way.

Hello Doc,

Unfortunately, rioting after a big sports victory is not just the shame of Montrealers. It just another universal human fault that crosses all cultures and nationalities. Did you see the video of guys the getting their pictures taken posing with flags of Quebec in front of a burning car?

Despicable,

Korbel
Times are changing.

We live in the Era of facebook and youtube. It's an event. Ugly but still something to tell stories about for this virtual generation.

I am not sure a discrete police presence is the solution, probably more police, a lot more, early on. Also closing a large perimeter to cars would maybe help, avoiding that cars be stuck in the crowds.

I too feel ashamed of how those neanderthals behaved. I can understand those who wish the Habs lose the next round... (sadly).

That's exactly the reason why this happens...
Of course it is... a small group of bums (some underaged as per SPVM) burnt down some cop cars because half of the city has Canadiens' flags on their cars! Real smart...

It is quite obvious from the images we saw last night on TV and from the police reports and various news reports this morning that last night's events were not a riot by the habs fans but rather a small group of young idiots who decided to take out their anger for the MTL police on all the cop cars they could get their hands on.

If it had been a riot, a real riot which is basically a huge crowd (like 20 000 people getting out of the Bell center) that bashes everything on their path (like store fronts, civilian cars and other public property), then you could blame the Habs fans or the hype behind the Canadien this year.

Having been at the game, I can assure you that the 22,000 people who were there were mostly NOT the same people burning cop cars and smashing business windows.... These people were FANS!

However, when we left the Bell center right after they announced the three stars, I was blown away by the MOB coming TOWARDS the bell center intent on some kind of anihilistic destruction. Most of these people had been drinking heavily (and doing whatever else) either at home or in downtown bars and were just waiting for the game to end in order to wreak havoc on the city. The only difference to them between a win and a loss was a slightly different motivation for smashing stuff.

These are hooligan losers, not fans and it's a shame, but I highly doubt it will tarnish the city reputation in any way. As other said, strange as it is, this behavior is pretty common around the world.

If you have a nice car, I would not bring it anywhere near the Bell center on upcoming game nights... I took a taxi :)

The difference being that most times when this happens the team has just won the Championship, not a quarterfinals series.

Whoa man, take it easy. Montreal is a very safe city and the risks that you are exposed to coming here are extremely small.

These are one off situations that almost never occurs. The last riot occured in 1993 after the Habs won the Stanley Cup I believe.

This is a case of focusing on isolated events and transforming this into routine events.

This is NOT Baghdad....
