A diplomat in Russia’s mission to the United Nations in Geneva quit his post on Monday, expressing shame over Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and describing it as a crime against both countries.

Boris Bondarev, a counselor in the Russian mission since 2019 who described himself as a 20-year veteran of Russia’s Foreign Ministry, announced his resignation in an email sent to diplomats in Geneva on Monday.
His resignation is the most high-profile gesture of protest so far made by a Russian diplomat over the war in Ukraine.

“For 20 years of my diplomatic career I have seen different turns of our foreign policy but never have I been so ashamed of my country as on Feb. 24 of this year,” Mr. Bondarev said, referring to the date that President Vladimir V. Putin sent Russian forces into Ukraine.

“The aggressive war unleashed by Putin against Ukraine and in fact against the entire Western world is not only a crime against the Ukrainian people but also, perhaps, the most serious crime against the people of Russia,” he added.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky called for "maximum" sanctions against Russia during a virtual speech Monday to corporate executives, government officials and other elites on the first day of the World Economic Forum gathering in Davos, Switzerland.

He said sanctions need to go further to stop Russia's aggression, including an oil embargo, blocking all of its banks and cutting off trade with Russia completely. He said that it's a precedent that would work for decades to come.

"This is what sanctions should be: They should be maximum, so that Russia and every other potential aggressor that wants to wage a brutal war against its neighbour would clearly know the immediate consequences of their actions," Zelensky said through a translator.

He also pushed for the complete withdrawal of foreign companies from Russia to prevent supporting its war and said Ukraine needs at least $5 billion US in funding per month.
"The amount of work is enormous: we have more than half a trillion of dollars in losses, tens of thousands of facilities were destroyed.

We need to rebuild entire cities and industries," Zelensky said, coming days after the Group of Seven leading economies agreed to provide $19.8 billion US in economic aid.

Russia today said it was looking over an Italian peace plan proposal to end the conflict in Ukraine.

"We have received it recently and are studying it," Deputy Foreign Minister Andrei Rudenko told reporters.

He declined to provide any details, saying Russia would comment at a later stage.

"It has not been discussed between Russia and Italy," he said in comments carried by Russian news agencies. Talks between Russia and Ukraine to end the hostilities have essentially ground to a halt.
Russia's lead negotiator Vladimir Medinsky said yesterday that Russia was willing to resume negotiations but the onus was on Kyiv.

Kissinger, who served under the administrations of Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford in the 1970s, warned against dragging on the war, and pressed for negotiations.

The former secretary of state said Russia has been an essential part of Europe for 400 years, acting as balancing power in critical times for the continent. Kissinger said Western countries should remember the importance of Russia in Europe and not get swept up "in the mood of the moment."

======

What old relics like Kissinger doesn't realize that Russia is NOT the USSR. Back in 1990, the population of the USSR was 280+ million (compared to the US's 250 million), and stretched from the Pacific to the Atlantic. Today Russia is but a shadow of the USSR - a GDP per capita not even in the top 50 of nations, and only 140 million population that is rapidly aging. Its only significant exports are oil/gas/wheat and most of those earnings have only accrued to the very, very few. It's only claim to infamy is its stock of nuclear weapons and I doubt even 90% of them are in useable condition.

Ukraine’s Armed Forces have released chilling footage showing the devastating impact of Russia’s TOS-1A artillery strikes hitting their positions. As per reports, the Russian thermobaric bomb strikes took place near Novomykhailivka and Lyman in the Donetsk region in Donbas.

The 30-barrel or 24-barrel multiple rocket launcher, mounted on a T-72 tank chassis, is capable of firing thermobaric warheads, a type of explosive that uses oxygen in the surrounding area to generate a high-temperature blast.

The video was posted from a Ukraine govt account with a message that read "this is what the largest and most horrific war of the 21st century looks like."

Fearsome. Good thing their range is only 6 km. Ukraine needs to ensure that these don't get too close to the front line with their own airforce, artillery and drones.

Biden administration just approved release of the HIMARs MLRS rocket artillery which has a range of 30-50 km, depending on projectile used. Hopefully they can turn the tide of battle.

As Garry Kasparov points out, Ukraine shows us all Western countries that democracy does not have to mean a soulless consumer society.

It's about self determination, the right to be represented and basic human freedoms, esp from the like of tyrants like Putin. I, for one, am proud that Canada has been supporting Ukraine all these years to build up their military, so that now they're ready to fight the Russians. And they've performed so well.

I hope someone in Bombardier is paying attention bc I'd love to see them startup a drone division, in competition with the Turkish Bayraktar program. In fact, Bayraktar was using Bombardier engines then Bombardier banned sales to them.

Drones have proven themselves in this war and I can only see their growth in the future.

The first of three chartered flights for Ukrainians escaping war arrived in Winnipeg on Monday, welcomed by friends, family and volunteers ready to help them resettle in Canada.

Today it's Montreal Trudeau.

I watched a bit on tv and it was extremely touching.

All because of a mentally ill, narcissistic dictator.
