While Mr. Shishimarin pleaded guilty, this is only the beginning of a long process: the General Prosecutor's Office claims to have already identified more than 12,000 alleged cases of war crimes.

Trying ordinary military personnel – even before prosecuting high-ranking officers, for such crimes is rare in the international arena.
It's even more exceptional when the fighting is still raging in the country.

Sam Kiley travels to the front lines in Bilohorivka, Ukraine, where Russian forces suffered a major defeat after Ukrainian forces stopped their advance.

My deep condolences to all Ukrainian people, soldiers and family.

Hope you win this war and make your country peace again.

On peut se douter que ce qui les attend sera bien pire que ce qu'ils ont vécu en captivité/Azovstal......à moins qu'ils servent de monnaie d'échange pour des prisonniers Russes.

Russia has claimed to have used some of its secret weapons in Ukraine including the new generation of powerful lasers.

According to Russia's Deputy PM, the new laser weapons are capable of inflicting both physical and thermal damage to the target.

Reports say that Russia’s powerful lasers can blind satellites in the Earth’s orbit as well as burn up drones mid-air. Kremlin’s secret weapons are reportedly aimed at countering the flood of Western arms being sent to Ukraine.

From what I`ve read , these secret super lasers can shoot down missile and fighter jets too. I heard that the US , China and Israel are working on them too.

There are lots of stories on the internet about Putin`s health and the fact that he is riddled with cancer. Who thinks it`s true ? The guy is 69 that is past the average age of death in Russian men.

President Vladimir Putin has called U.S. and NATO activities in the Black Sea a "serious challenge" for Russia, which has asserted additional naval rights in the region since seizing Crimea from Ukraine in 2014.

"The United States and its allies in NATO are carrying out unplanned exercises in the Black Sea," Russia said on the state's Vesta TV channel.
"Not only is a rather powerful naval group involved in these exercises, but also aviation, including strategic aviation.
This is a serious challenge for us."

For any of you interested in war, see below for an analysis on how Ukraine has deployed its artillery i.e. those big guns that can fire 40 km away. Basically they dispersed their artillery (since counter fire is always a problem), then using a locally created app, assigned targets for guns. This has the effect of reducing reaction time to minutes, compared to hours for Western militaries. Think of something like a food delivery app, except it's Ukrainian artillery & Russians, not delivery drivers & hungry customers. Video is in German, but use the auto-translate feature: seems to work well.

Russian tanks are evolving into a species of Salmon. They spend their lives growing up in the plains of Russia and then migrate to Ukraine to meet their fate in the region ruled by St. Stugna, St. Javelin and St. NLAW. They meet their fate by ejecting their turrets while mating (borrowed)

Have heard the term "Flying Tank|" for a while but I never knew that it really existed until I saw this Russian tank "flying" ...

Russia is replacing its sunken Moskva cruiser with Admiral Makarov, an Admiral Grigorovich-class frigate, to lead its Black Sea fleet.
The frigate is said to have shot down a Bayraktar TB2 drone on April 12 during the ongoing invasion of Ukraine.
After the loss of Moskva, Russia was expected to choose a new flagship to maintain fleet command and control.
Admiral Makarov, which was navigating in the Black Sea since 2018, was considered as the most suitable option for assuming flagship duties.

Russia claimed to have captured Mariupol after a nearly three-month siege that reduced much of the strategic port city to a smoking ruin, with over 20,000 civilians feared dead.
Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu reported to President Vladimir Putin the “complete liberation” of the Azovstal steel plant in Mariupol — the last stronghold of Ukrainian resistance — and the city as a whole, spokesman Igor Konashenkov said Friday.

There was no immediate confirmation from Ukraine.

Russia’s state news agency RIA Novosti quoted the ministry as saying a total of 2,439 Ukrainian fighters who had been holed up at the steelworks had surrendered since Monday, including over 500 on Friday.

The weight of the turret is about 4-5 tons and as you can see it is going up in the air for at least 100 feet due to the sympathetic detonation of the tank munition positioned around the turret perimeter in the autoloader. The sympathetic detonation of the munition is caused by the new antitank weapons that defeat armor with explosively formed projectiles.

A fire broke out at a premier Russian aerospace institute involved in research on Russian warplanes on May 21.

Footage on social media shows smoke billowing into the air at the Central Aerohydrodynamic Institute’s (TsAGI) substation.

The fire at TsAGI, 69km southeast of Moscow, is the latest in a string of mysterious fire outbreaks in Russia amid Moscow’s invasion of Ukraine.

There were no reports of casualties from the inferno, which was suppressed by firefighters within an hour.

Unlike some Western tanks which are protected using Chobam / Kavlar type of armor, the Russians seems to be relying heavily on exterior Explosive Reactive Amour (ERA) protection, which in theory should stop AT weapons from penetrating the main armor and set off the stored ammunition inside from exploding, but here seems this system is failing big time on mass scale hence allowing inside explosions and spectacular tank explosions.
