From what I heard on the radio a couple of weeks ago when this story first started, they were saying that Schwartz's does about 8 million dollars of business a year. Don't forget that the restaurant isn't all they do. They sell on line, do catering and have a line of spices that's sold in grocery stores.

There's no way in hell to recoup $10,000,000.00 from one restaurant, they have to franchise!

They will have to open a lot of locations to recoup their $10 mil., but in that price they are getting name and reputation and the instant manpower and knowledge to manufacture smoked meat.

For all you smoked meat lovers, if you go down the street to below Pine Ave. There is a charcouterie called Slovenia. You can get a smoked meat sandwich as big as one you would get at Schwartz for $4.50 but it is not hand sliced. You can eat it there standing or you can take it out. Soft drinks available but no fries.

i heard that they had sold their interestes in nickels...

and about the classic smoke meat place, is that true 10mil.. wow.
my uncle used to work there when i was young..he said they would easily have days where the cash would be picked up 3-4 times a day, to avoid having so much cash around.

the thing about shwartz is that if they change one element such as suppliers, to the way the bread is kept, or the meat is done..
if they change anything, it wont be the same.(and it will go downhill)
they have been doing everything in a certain manner for so long..that it is essential to the continuing success, and maintenance of the foods reputation.
i heard people talking about shwartz smoked meat in boston...so they definitely are well known.

at christmas i saw a line-up on st-laurent at the take out side that was at least 70 people outside. i was baffled. they were just standing in the cold waiting.

I know a little about the prices of the buildings in that area. The $25k price for the building was realistic for that building considering the time it was built and the area. St. Laurent was the main street at that time. During the depression the prices of the buildings sank to $4-5-6K. In the early 70s to early 80s that area was a dump and welfare recipients lived there. These days the same houses go for $200K.

I often used to eat there (at Ben's) when i'd be staying at the Omni Mont-Royal, which was a block or two away. The last time i was there, famous movie director Norman Jewison was also eating there. He mentionned that he had heard about Ben's Deli for years & had never managed to check it out until now. There were several 'celebrities' staying at the Omni that week: Jewison, Angelina Jolie, former Ontario Premier David Peterson, and of course, yours truly.

That's the same time when the night table by my bed caught fire (i'll never use candles again when with an sp) and the whole fire brigade wound up coming to my room after the hotel's fire alarm came on.
