I think the old owner was making a killing in cash, but since the government insist that you make a receipt for every customer and place it in their hand things are not as lucrative for him.

My guess is that the owner got an offer that he couldn't refuse. I mean....$10 million??? Who the hell would pay $10 million for that place? Yeah, i know....Celine & Rene.

>>> One more useless quote deleted. See post IMMEDIATELY ABOVE!! Mod 11.

It has to be somehow, somewhere near $10 mil. If news got out that they actually paid $4.5 mil. it would make Celine out to be a chizler.

If they indeed did pay $10 million for THAT place, then they will franchise it out unless they like making bad business decisions, but then again, ten mill to Celine is like a dollar to the average person.

Celine can take a big hit and still come out OK because she can deduct her losses while the restaurant builds up and makes a reputation. Many companies/ people can not do that.

I actually don't think Celine & Rene care that much about making $$ with Schwartz. I think it's all about owning this smoked meat shrine. It's just a trophy for them. "Hey, i own Schwartz!" I think people are making it a bigger deal than it really is. I wouldn't surprised if absolutely nothing changes & it'll be business as usual.

I hope nothing will change there. Going to Schwartz is an experience, as going to Cleo... Nothing compares to it. It's not so about the Smoked Meat, wich is really good, but the atmosphere is unique. It was a similar experience (but totally different) when the Old Montreal Pool Room was on the west side of St-Laurent street. It's not the same since they moved across the street. This being said, I prefer my smoked meat from Pete's at Ile-Perrot (behind the Dairy Queen). It's the same recipe to prepare their own meat. When you get in it smells the same as at Schwartz, but it's a little bit more modern (looks as in the 60's...) and there is always a band playing blues on week-ends. But Ile-perrot is not downtown...

As for the investment itself, I think it's a good move specially if you consider that all this area will get a boost when all the works around Le Quartier des Spectacles will be done... probably within 5 years from now. Anyway, Schwartz is an institution in Montreal and it's probably as an emotional than an economic decision. I'm not a fan of Celine as a singer but I'm glad Schwartz will survive.

I used to eat smoked meat every single day that i'd be in Montreal. My preferred choice was Reuben's, since it was located close to where i was staying & because i liked their brand of smoked meat. I also love the atmosphere in the place since they renovated. There is also a large variety of items on the menu & they're all very good.

I stopped eating smoked meat when i discovered how nasty it was on a person's health. Regular consumption of red meat can lead to heart disease & some studies link it to cancer. My weight also increased by 50 lbs at the time i was binging on smoked meat sandwiches. When i'd go to hockey games at the Molson Centre, i'd prefer sitting on the 2nd level because all food items & soft drinks are free. During the games, i'd eat a smoked meat sandwich every period, and by making sure i'd attend the games in a long trenchcoat, i'd fill my deep pockets with at least half a dozen smoked meat sandwiches to take home after the game.

These days, i'm a fitness buff, i watch what i eat & drink, and i avoid smoked meat as much as possible. However, it's hard to avoid the other pink meat that's plenty available whenever i travel to Mtl, which is less & less frequently as i grow older. :)

It is not just the red meat in the smoked meat sandwiches that will slowly kill you, it is the sodium and nitrates that they use to cure the meat. They need an experienced smoked meat slicer to cut it up for you because if it is not done properly it falls apart in crumbs. It falls apart because it is permeated with salt and nitrates that break the meat down.

Zatara;

Absolutely. Now i have a question for all of you: "Is there a more unhealthy food than smoked meat?"

Ok, a few fun facts

VERSUS

Although smoked meat is about twice as high in a serving size as a DFT in sodium, it appears to be the healthier treat. Ok, off to Zesto's for a Rueben. :D (not sure where they get their smoked meat or if they make it themselves but do yourselves a favor and try it from there)..Best I ever had, although I only tried them for the first time about 2 yrs ago. (A rueben that is, they also have a wonderful grilled chicken ceasar, but their pizza sucks, go figure)

Which Reuben's the cellar or the street level?

The average sandwich is at least 15 slices not 3, so up to 300 calories and counting.

A related topic
Dunn's Famous has really gone down the drain since franchising. Found their meat dry and so so.
Another sour note is their Metclafe street location is not francophone friendly. They definetly send you the message that they're annoyed. The waitress couldn't even understand «verre d'eau et vinaigre».
Used to love this place in the 70's on Ste-Cath.

Captain out!

Zesto's is closed, i believe.

I loved Dunn's back in the late 80's/early 90's when i started coming to Montreal. They used to be on Ste-Catherine street at the time. Can't remember where exactly, but if i remember correctly, they were on a corner & it was on the east side.

I've been to their place on Metcalfe a few times & i hate their food. The smoked meat they serve is way too dry & the fries overcooked. I'll never go back again!
