This guy was trying to push somebody's buttons. If the driver did not have the time, all he had to do was ask someone else sitting on the bus. There are plenty of people in Montreal who know English. They may be bi-lingual or mostly English. I know that there are anglophones who forgot most of the French that they learned in school.

Hopefully, this guy will learn French while studying in Montreal. The worst thing you can do as a visitor, whether student or tourist, is to agitate the natives. It is rude and it's not being a nice visitor. Insisting that they answer you in a language that you understatnd and they don't is one way of agitating someone.

When I ask for directions and I see that the person I asked is having a hard time answering me in English, I say "Merci" and I apologize (Je fais des excuses).and move on. It is the civil thing to do.

Tu rigoles, Hitman?

You're joking, right HITMAN? With the way unions work, there'd have to be a murder comitted before any sort of punishment would ever be dished out...

Actually, this happened inf ront of me....couple of months ago, an american couple also was asking the bus driver and it was a she....and she refused to speak in english....I had to translate to them what she said, since it happenend in front of me

I have a lot of other stories of racism that I had experienced here...unfortunalty, it is not something that poeple don't know....it was been there and will stay there....
Racism is everywhere , in all cultures...but Canada is made of immigrants and mix of cultures so racism should be the least...unfortunatly it is not
Regards to all

i agree...everybody in all countries should speak english

Don't agree with me on that because I never said it. What I said is that anyone who works in Montreal for any branch of the government, municipal, or provincial or federal, and who deals with the public on a daily basis as part of their job, should be bilingual. I really don't give a damn if someone in a dep or any other business refuses to speak to me in my language of choice because I'll just take my money elsewhere. But when jobs deal with public safety, and yes...a bus driver or metro employee is responsible for the safety of transit users, they should be required to be bilingual. Especially when our tax money is paying their salary.

I fail to see how anyone with even the slightest bit of intelligence can disagree with that.

Considering how much of our taxdollars they are being paid, if they don't like the requirements they can find themselves another job that, if they are lucky, will pay them half as much.

You'd probably have less trouble finding a bus driver in Tokyo that is willing to speak English than you will in Montreal.:(

I would bet you anything that if mass transit was privatized, these problems would vanish overnight.

So then I guess if you don't know how to speak a language you shouldn't visit that country then. Or maybe you should take language courses for each country you visit. Maybe we should take out some tourist ads in major American newspapers to tell American tourists that we aren't interested in any of their money if they can't speak French. Or why don't we make everyone crossing the border into Quebec take language tests, you don't pass - you don't get in, so that some bus driver or ticket taker doesn't feel insulted.

But you're right, it is a question of respect...respect for the customer who is spending their money. And that is something that is sorely lacking in the transit system and has been for a very long time.

Is this a joke?

Muhammad Ahmad Munir, a master's student from Pakistan studying at McGill University,
The 32-year-old native of Islamabad came to Montreal a few months ago to enroll in a master's degree program in Islamic studies at McGill.
Is this a joke or this asshole really came in our Province to learn the Coran
I knew that Cairo was a famous place to learn Islam but Montreal... OMG!
Or maybe it's a joint program with the department of chemistry at Mc Gill :D.
Or he's just another cockroach whose intention is to sue the STM to make money out of Montreal's tax payers (STM is subsidized by the City), like his friends Omar Kader and Suaad Hagi Mohamud.

I still don't understand why the majority of our fellow citizens absolutely want Canada to become a muslim country ...

Here you had a clash of two cultures. A Quebec woman and an Islamic man. Both are impossible to deal with.

lol, MM

Seriously, though:
I think that incidents such as these are excuses for those on both sides of the perpetual language debate to get on their soap boxes. What do we have here? A grand total of one bus driver and one passenger. If the MTCN administration forbade their personnel from speaking English or a majority of non francophones refused to speak French, we have a problem. Neither is the case.

That may be the case but I doubt people are gonna hate on you for not speaking their language or call the police. This whole story is so absurd. There are many tourists coming to Montreal and we cannot expect them to speak French they may be Americans or people from other parts of Canada. I believe drivers driving the routes in the downtown Montreal should be required to have some level of English. Preserving a language does not have to mean to hate on another language which is more often the case in Montreal.

Really  ? So you are telling me that if you go to Portugal you speak Portuguese or if you go to China you speak Cantonese or Mandarin? Do you realize how silly you sound? Let me ask you do you speak Portuguese? I doubt by the sounds of your comments  .
