Two boats, one French only, the other English/French (SP stayed with me).
.

Now the next story will be the following one: If the English/French boat capsizes, the rescuers will shout «French children and ladies first!».

Sorry, I couldn't resist...

What are you getting angry about I didn't say it to you and maybe he's new in this country and doesnt know the language well like most new immigrants.

Because you are making a jugement on a woman you don't even know! You don't know what really happend there and you simply call her a bitch! At least, you should excuse yourself to talk that much bad ... bitch ... you have no other polite word in your mind or what?!

And what if the driver was scarred of a bomb attack ? Why was he insisting to know "what time is it" ? What was his agenda ?

I think the driver was right 1000% to stop right there, call 911 and get everybody out for her protection and safety of everyone.

Put yourself in the shoes of the bus driver for a second...

;)

In that case the driver should be nervous and call 911 whenever a French speaking Quebecer gets on her bus because the only terrorist bomb attacks that have ever occured in Montreal, or Canada as a whole for that matter, were committed by French Quebecers.

Your post is racist and xenophobic. And that is the kindest thing I can say about it.

You're right. He should have simply called her a racist. No need to drag her gender into it. :D

No sorry but he shouldn't call her a racist also because as much as everybody here, he was not in that bus that day so he shouldn't make this kind of jugement ...

who knows if the guy was not agressive or if he was not telling some bad things to this girl because she never learned english as HE did. Maybe he was the racist ... I DON'T KNOW AND YOU DON'T ... so pleazzzze stop to bash on people ... both side!!

Très bon article! Moi qui habite à côté de ce métro en particulier et qui le fréquente parfois, ça fait drôle de lire une journée dans la vie de nos passeurs qui, soit dit en passant, ne sont jamais bête avec moi . loll

Yes it is a great article. It's amazing to realize that you can earn $24.73/hour for sitting on your ass all day. That's $45,000/year which is more than many people who work their ass off instead of sitting on it would be very happy to earn. Not bad at all.

No need because the rescuers would probably be giving directions only in French which the English speaking tourists would not understand and so they would probably end up drowning anyways. It would then be reported in the papers, a thread would be started here and there would be posters defending the rescuers because if anyone comes here, they should be able to understand French.

Moving Forward...................

Let's move the discussion forward. What is the fallout going to be from this controversy? Is the bus driver going to be fired, given a raise, or sent for cultural sensitivity training at McGill? Or will she be asked to buy a set of "Learn French like 1-2-3" tapes for young Muhammad? Will she apologize? Or will she be cheered by her fellow drivers and appointed the chief of the local Busdrivers 101 Union?

Is young Muhammad going to buy a watch? Will he apologize? Will the incident provide the basis for his Master's thesis in some way? Will STM give him complimentary rides for a month? Will he learn French? When?

Will Prime Minister Harper invite both of them for a beer at the Prime Minister's office in Ottawa like President Obama invited the two knuckleheads in Cambridge (Harvard professor and cop) to the White House? If so will the discussion be in French, English or both? How is Harper's French, anyway?

If only I knew...
Ok, some will say I'm racist but I can't guarantee it's not true. I'm speaking from experience and I can also confirm this will apply only to a minority but that minority does exist.

The woman-driver might have really felt threatened. Who knows, the incident might not have played-out as peacefully, without moves or raised voices, like the guy reported it to the reporter. Maybe it was a bit more "active"?

The guy is a Muslim from Pakistan. The driver was a woman. In Pakistan, women are often not quite equal to men when we're dealing with Muslim religion.

From experience also, I can say that Pakistani peoples tend to become quite intimidating when they don't get what they want. Negotiation and being expressive is normal for lots of them. It's not a question of agressivity, it's just a question of the tone of their native language combined with the way they move. Sometimes, they might not even realize they look threatening and have no intentions to threaten anybody. I worked with a few peoples from middle east and some were shocked when I told them some peoples were distant with them because they were scaring them. It wasn't all of them acting that way but some definitely were! As soon as they toned-down, the situation came back normal.

On top of those cultural differences, if the person who's not giving them what they want is a woman, for some Muslim guys, how she dare defy them? You can multiply the guy's normal reaction by 10!

He ask her the time, probably in not so good english. She don't understand or can't answer. He insist instead of simply letting go and asking somebody else. She tells him she don't speak english, he keeps insisting and try to confront her some more...

No matter if the guy came in to study Islam in an English university, he's coming to Montréal and Montréal is a French city so, he must be ready to encounter peoples who don't speak English. If he can't handle this, he might as well go elsewhere. Peoples don't have to adapt to him. Sad for him but that's the way.

She will probably be given a pat on the back and moved to a better route, maybe Westmount or Hampstead, where she can offer her superb service to a new clientel, most of whom will probably own a watch.

The passenger has nothing to apologize for. If he is smart he will file a complaint with the Human Rights Commission and will win some kind of settlement which will, of course, be paid from our tax dollars. He is not a resident here, only a foreign student at an English learning institution, and he has absolutely no obligation to learn French when he should be able to get along in Montreal perfectly well with his knowledge of English. He will learn to keep his mouth shut and not complain about language, finish his studies and get the hell out of here with his fine education that has been subsidized by, yup...you guessed it, our tax dollars.

I agree with you man. Here is a masters student who probably when he is done will go back home or move to a different country where he will have an amazing salary and his tax money will go to that country. We need more brilliant people like him and less of these lazy and arrogant bus drivers with a closed mind.

Cette histoire vient de The Gazette qui n'ont aucune crédibilité sur les questions de la langue.
L'équipe éditoriale de ce journal a toujours été anti-francophone.

Of course. How could any English media ever have any credibility when it comes to language. We should all wait for the fair and unbiased report to appear in the Journal de Montreal before making any statements.

I don't see how he will necessarily have an amazing salary or if he will fill a need of the Canadian economy based on what he is trying to get his Master's degree for -

From the original article as seen in the first post in the thread -

"The 32-year-old native of Islamabad came to Montreal a few months ago to enroll in a master's degree program in Islamic studies at McGill."

Get over it !

The above mentionned problem arised last fall in Ottawa from an idiot who wanted to be served in French in an Ottawa Bus. Did I stand on his side even tough I was born French Canadian, and yes in Quebec. It's always the same F_ _ _ g Sad Joke going on. When will peoples get over it? I personally live in Ottawa CAPITAL of Canada, which is not Officially designed as a bilingual city. Yep, and I get over it. When I am in Ottawa, were I live I speak english and dont request nor request to be be served in French, when I go in Hull (Gatineau) I speak French and expect to be served in French but I get over it. The day I will expect to be served in French in Ontario, I will pack up my think and go live in Quebec[/B]. Get the drift?. More than that I don't consider that I have a God given right to be served in French in Canada, but expect such when in Quebec, and when I go to the West End of Montreal and those Big English Mama that work at the Bay refuse to serve me in French. I get over it and go to another part of the City to do my shopping. More than that when I go to the Dominican Republic, guess what? I don't expect to be served neither in French or English and I have taken time to learn the minimal Spanish needed to ask where is the Hotel or WHAT TIME IS IT. It's called Minimal Courtesy, and guess what? I am preparing a trip to Haiti in December and will learn the basic Creole needed to have answer to those questions. I am so sick and tired of these complaining over the Language. If you live in a City where the main language is not yours, learn the basics or get the f_ _ _ k out of there. There is still a lot of place available in the 9 other Province for those who want to be fully serve in English and 1 Province in Canada for those who fully want to be served in French.

Is it at all relevant what the guy will earn or what he does at this point in time? He was discriminated against and that's all that matters. I don't care if he's the Prime Minister of Canada or a bus boy in a restaurant or the person who hands out the free newspaper at the metro station. It was wrong.

Well the article I read it just mentioned he's a master student they didn't specify in what field but regardless what happened was wrong. As for the other guy who stated that "Cette histoire vient de The Gazette qui n'ont aucune crédibilité sur les questions de la langue.

Like the french newspapers are any better:D
