Senator Edward M. Kennedy, who carried aloft the torch of a Massachusetts dynasty and a liberal ideology to the citadel of Senate power, but whose personal and political failings may have prevented him from realizing the ultimate prize of the presidency, died at his home in Hyannis Port last night after a battle with brain cancer. He was 77.
“We’ve lost the irreplaceable center of our family and joyous light in our lives, but the inspiration of his faith, optimism, and perseverance will live on in our hearts forever,’’ his family said in a statement. “We thank everyone who gave him care and support over this last year, and everyone who stood with him for so many years in his tireless march for progress toward justice, fairness, and opportunity for all. He loved this country and devoted his life to serving it. He always believed that our best days were still ahead, but it’s hard to imagine any of them without him.’’
Overcoming a history of family tragedy, including the assassinations of a brother who was president and another who sought the presidency, Senator Kennedy seized the role of being a “Senate man.’’ He became a Democratic titan of Washington who fought for the less fortunate, who crafted unlikely deals with conservative Republicans, and who ceaselessly sought support for universal health coverage.
“Teddy,’’ as he was known to intimates, constituents, and even his fiercest enemies, was an unwavering symbol to the left and the right - the former for his unapologetic embrace of liberalism, and latter for his value as a political target. But with his fiery rhetoric, his distinctive Massachusetts accent, and his role as representative of one of the nation’s best-known political families, he was widely recognized as an American original. In the end, some of those who might have been his harshest political enemies, including former President George W. Bush, found ways to collaborate with the man who was called the “last lion’’ of the Senate.
Senator Kennedy’s White House aspirations may have been doomed by his actions on the night he drove off a bridge at Chappaquiddick Island in 1969 and failed to promptly report the accident in which Mary Jo Kopechne, who had worked for his brother Robert, died. When Kennedy nonetheless later sought to wrest the presidential nomination from an incumbent Democrat, Jimmy Carter, he failed. But that failure prompted him to reevaluate his place in history, and he dedicated himself to fulfilling his political agenda by other means, famously saying, “the dream shall never die.’’
He was the youngest child of a famous family, but his legacy derived from quiet subcommittee meetings, conference reports, and markup sessions. The result of his efforts meant hospital care for a grandmother, a federal loan for a working college student, or a better wage for a dishwasher.

PORT COLBORNE, Ontario (AP) -Ted "Teeder" Kennedy, the captain of five Stanley Cup championship teams with the Toronto Maple Leafs during a Hall of Fame career, died Friday. He was 83.
He died of congestive heart failure at a nursing home in his hometown of Port Colborne, son Mark Kennedy said.
Kennedy spent 14 years in the NHL, all with the Maple Leafs. He was a five-time All-Star. The center captained Toronto from 1948 to 1955, when he won the Hart Trophy as league MVP. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1966.
He finished his career with 231 goals and 329 assists in 696 games. He had 29 goals and 31 assists in 78 playoff games.
"I was certainly happy to play against him, and I'm so sorry to hear," Montreal Canadiens great Jean Beliveau said. "He was a complete centerman, a good playmaker, a good passer, good on faceoffs. I was just starting, he was just completing his career. I must have learned a few tricks from him on those faceoffs.
"His skating was not 100 percent. He certainly compensated with his great want to win, to do things right."
Hall of Famer Dick Duff recalls how honored he felt when he was given the No. 9 Kennedy had worn.
"At that time, Ted Kennedy was regarded by fans and team ownership as one of, if not, the best player to have ever worn the crest of the Maple Leafs, and I was truly humbled by the gesture," Duff said. "I admired him greatly and I wore his number with tremendous pride."
NHL commissioner Gary Bettman called Kennedy the "embodiment of Maple Leaf success."
"Teeder never wanted to play for any other team, and he never did," Bettman said. "He always wanted what was best for the Leafs, and for 14 superb seasons that is what he helped them achieve through his leadership, his incomparable work ethic and his ferocious will to win."
In addition to his son, Kennedy is survived by his wife, Doreen, two grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

I don't second that, but I do think it's a shame we're mourning a man who I believe--though obviously can't prove--got away with murder

Maybe not murder...but he sure as hell got away with something. Poor Mary Jo.

Kennedy was probably drunk when he accidentally drove the car off the bridge with the young woman. It was night and poorly lighted. He was probably too drunk to save her, and anyway the conditions probably would have meant his life considering his condition if he tried. In my own city a very similar incident happened when four teens were speeding and drove off a bridge, jumping a rail and crashed into the river. Police Immediately on the scene refused to jump into the water because of the current and the extremely murky conditions under water. The same incident except it was daytime. Three of the older teens died. It was night in Kennedy's case.
Kennedy was grossly negligent as a driver up to the point of Mary Jo's death. That's all. After that he shamefully used several hours to figure how to handle the episode from a political view. But he couldn't have saved her life. The information I have seen asserts she was knocked out when her side of the car rolled into and slammed against the water after which she drowned. He's guilty of drunk driving death resulting, and plotting to color the incident in a way that did the least harm to his reputation. "Murder" or similar accusations are nonsense.
Considering how so many drunk drivers get away with light sentences after killing someone and never do anything for anyone else afterward at least Kennedy has redeemed himself a million fold, though that doesn't bring her back of course. You would be hard pressed to find anyone in history who has done more to help the working people, the poor, work civil rights, and fight for hundreds of other issues for the working class. He did all that despite tragedy after tragedy after tragedy to his own family.
Nothing can change the fact that Mary Jo Kopechne died because Kennedy was a negligent driver. But at least he had a huge mountain of achievements helping many millions of others to stand on. Those who choose to remember only the tragic death of this lady instead of anything else he achieved obviously have a very narrow agenda, and hatred, that cannot be changed. Hundreds of millions owe Ted Kennedy a lot more than defining his life by a tragic accident.

Politically Kennedy was the enemy. But on his passing I have to look to what we had in common. We were both red blooded, freedom loving Americans that had a healthy appetite for the opposite sex. In fact many people have compared my sex habits to that of a Kennedy. In this we have found common ground.

TBH, I have a problem with Ted Kennedy being placed on a pedestal.
This is not isolated to MERB. I have seen Threads on each Thailand forum I am apart of also. I put my .02 in there also.
He has helped some people, but he is far from a saint.

Many people, famous people with the biggest names have huge egos and huge faults. But very few of these very faulted people like T. Kennedy ever also had the heart and mind to also dedicate themselves so much to those who work or have so little...as even his most vociferous opponents have amply noted lately. They may hate Kennedy's politics, but none deny his love of people and country.
