Our banking system is extremely American! Meaning there is not one single, unified approach, but all kinds of seemingly random rules and restrictions. Depends on the bank. .

Greenacres is correct. I do my banking with a local bank that I do not believe is even tapped into that system. However I am leery about using foreign ATM machines that are not my bank's due to identity theft. When I rode up to Montreal with Chercherfemmes last summer I was amused because he is using a large international bank and he actually had to call them to tell them he would be in Canada using ATMs, because they have powerful anti-identity theft protocols and CCF feared arrest or legal issues with his card if he did not give them advance notice. He apparently had some big issues in the past using his bank card at a Montreal ATM. They cancelled his card or some shit due to suspected identity theft. And as a result I had to lend CCF money.

I got identity theft protection for free from my bank because they had a breach a few years ago and all customers got free protection. I used a vending machine with a credit card which is the last time I will ever do that, and my identity was sought to be compromised. I got the alert from the service that day, and then cancelled the card. Never again. It was the vending machine that had been hacked into as it was the only time I had used my credit card that particular day. All because I was dying of thirst and had no dollar bills to buy a bottle of water.

You guys obviously think foreign ATMs are safe and secure, good luck with that thinking.

By the ways, regarding Greenacres' comment on random rules and restrictions, I have declared war on Chase because they keep fucking me up with their ridiculous rules and restrictions in my law practice. I got so upset with a restriction they imposed recently that I threatened to subpoena someone higher up the food chain to an Court hearing unless the fuckers backed off, which they did.

I always tell my banks and the credit cards I intend to use when I travel (both domestically and Canada). Not doing so will almost always generate a friendly call from the fraud department! They always call the home number too which is not helpful if you are, you know, actually travelling. Them: "Hello, it seems you are buying gas every 360 miles on I-95." Me: "No shit!"

Nice to be cautious but can not walk around paranoid all the time with worrying about ATM machines and being scammed by your favorite hotel for a few sodas. For the millions of people who use these items and the small amount that get scammed ( and if you watch where you shop it should never happen ) is it worth the worry. You should be protected by the banks, not saying to be an idiot and use a machine in a massage parlor but some kind of common sense should prevail. ATM's with a major bank are 99% safe, I would never use one in a strip club etc. And yes I do not mind taking chances and so far the good luck gnome has been kind.
My bank also required that I let them know if the card is being used outside of Canada.

I use TD Bank here in NYC and when I'm in Montreal I go to TD Bank. I get the market rate when pulling out Canadian money, no foreign exchange fees, and I can take out whatever my limit is here in the US. It's very easy. The way I did it previously was to use Bank of America which has a relationship with Scotia Bank. It worked similar to the set up I now have at TD Bank, but I would always run into issues withdrawing money even if I did let them know ahead of time that I was leaving the USA. I would always call ahead of time and let them know about my travel plans, but it was a constant pain in the ass which is why I went with TD Bank.

I've been traveling to Montreal for 13 years and NEVER have I had an issue using "Foreign" ATM's. LOL. Beav, you crack me up some times! My bank is affiliated with Canada Trust so NO transaction or withdrawals fees and also THE highest exchange rate at posted time. The bank I used prior to TD Bank charged me a piddly $1.75 per withdrawal, still less than you'll pay at any Calforex. My cash withdrawal limit per 24 hour period is $600, so if you're receiving reports that you're only allowed a $200 withdrawal you might want stop paying attention to the rental ATM's in the restaurants or hotel lobbies. For me and many others, ATM withdrawal is THE way to go for the best exchange and it's just as secure as in CT, can you believe that Beav? Lol.

As I mentioned earlier I do business with a small local bank in CT and they are not tapped into that network from what I know. You guys may think that it is somehow advantageous to do business with large banks but IMHO based on practicing law for a very long time the large banks are FUCKING HORRIBLE. Many attorneys I know tell their clients to use local banks only for financing on condo closings, for restricted accounts and I can tell you horror stories you would not believe about the large national banks. Chase is a complete horror show both on real estate closings and on restricted accounts. They have their own rules that make no sense and run afoul of Connecticut law, and the local branches do not call local attorneys for legal advice, they call their legal department which is in Chicago and staffed by a bunch of kids just out of law school who know nothing about CT law. They are the pits of the earth. I will never do business with Chase or Bank of America as they are scum suckers and leeches. They think their own stupid rules are superior to state laws. I just say no to these banks. What you guys do with your own money is your business, but not a fucking cent of mine will ever be banked at these horrible institutions.

By the ways you guys should read this article linked below and ask yourselves what role JP Morgan Chase, Bank of America and others had in the housing crash in 2008. I was on the frontlines defending many foreclosure suits and I observed the fraud firsthand:

IMO a bank that charges for every ATM transaction and only allows $200.00 withdrawal a day is horrible in todays society. I imagine Chase and Bank of America have millions of happy customers but there is always that 1% of people who are getting screwed no matter what business they are interacting with. I dealt with Henessey for a motor in the US and did all the review checks, yes there were some poor reviews but the majority was good and decided to do business with them, all was great. One article or a couple of bad reviews does not change my mind.
When Canadians shop in the US ( I never do ) they accept the lower Canadian dollar because of the cheaper products they buy and it works pretty good for them. Same should apply to Americans who come here for escorts and should not complain when their dollar was low. For a man of your stature who calls $200 a pittance and talks about HDH and staying at the Omni the extra $ 20 to $100 in exchange fees should make any difference for a weekend in Montreal. Actually anyone who comes up from the states just for escorts should not complain of the exchange rate when it was not in your favor.

You are confusing apples and oranges. I do not do business with those banks for reasons other than what is being discussed in this thread. I could post a million stories about it but it is beyond the scope of what is being discussed here. I have been involved in actual legal cases against these banks on behalf of clients. They are scum and hippo ball sucking cretons. I do business with a small local bank not tapped into that network and that is my choice. I only use that bank's ATMs when I am at home.

For those of traveling from the US, this is a good summary of what your bank will charge you for making an ATM withdrawal in Montreal: http://www.nerdwallet.com/blog/banking/debit-card-foreign-transaction-international-atm-fees/

I've found that almost all the major Canadian banks charge CAD $2-$3 for using their ATMs. Of the most common ones, TD is the lowest at $1.95. If you want to save a buck, the ING Direct on Maisonneuve Ouest (Peel/Stanley) only charges $1 and I've had no problem withdrawing CAD$400 there.

If you have a BofA account and withdraw at a ScotiaBank ATM, there are no ATM-usage fees from either BofA or Scotia, but as of a few months ago you do get hit with the 3% f/x fee.

I exchanged US Currency for Canadian at the Calforex on Peel just south of St. Catherine's st. (A tip from EB)
The address is 1230 Rue Peel. They were giving 1.085 Canadian for 1.000 US Dollar.
I did some comparison shopping and the rate was typically 1.07 Canadian per US dollar.
The Airport is sticking up your ass at 1.007 Canadian (basically Par) with a 5.95$ Fee.
Just get enough money to buy a 10$ bus ticket on the 747 and head downtown.
I enjoyed a free lunch and I was able to stock up on wine and a few groceries with what I saved exchanging money and cab fare!
