I'm debating whether it was a dirty blow or not and leaning towards not dirty.
When the intent is to either decapitate or kill the opposing player, i'd say it's a dirty blow. I don't care if he was hit with the shoulder or the elbow. It also should be an interference penalty when the guy doesn't even have the puck & he's blindsided by an opposing player. We see interference penalties called on players who barely touch an opposing player without the puck, yet nothing is called when a guy nearly gets killed by a runaway bus.
I'm not against hitting & there's nothing i love more than a good, hard bodycheck. But when the player no longer has the puck & he's looking up ice, there's absolutely no reason why he should expect getting nearly decapitated or runover. He no longer has the puck.
Another problem i have is with premeditated fights. As soon as the puck drops, two players skate away, put their gloves down, line one another up & begin swinging. Usually it's the tougher guys (the goons) on both teams. I find this absolutely stupid & it's one of the main reasons why one day, fighting in hockey will be outlawed. I have nothing against a fight that happens in the flow of the action. But these types of premeditated fights are becoming more & more common now & breaking the flow of the action. They're just plain stupid! Not only should a delay-of-game penalty be applied to the 5-minute fighting majors, an 10-minute misconduct penalty should be added also. Therefore, both of these idiots will have an extra 20 minute to think about what they just did. Also, considering the size of these two gorillas, i wouldn't be surprised if one day, someone doesn't get killed by a single punch to the head. Players whose roles on their respective teams consider mostly fighting the other team's goons regularly suffer concussions & this increasing problem is constantly being ignored.
