Mike Babcock of Detroit was ranked #2 in the list of favorite coaches, with Guy Boucher of TBay # 4. Ron Wilson was overwhelmingly voted the least popular coach in the entire NHL.
If this is true, I'm kinda surprised they revealed the Bottom5 coaches... but I can't say I'm surprised to see Wilson at the bottom... Burke's undoing was to leave Ron Wilson at the helm while bailing water out of a sinking ship. Wilson has done nothing but ram his ship into the rocks repeatedly by publicly mouthing off about his players' lack of this n that. Only Bowman could get away with that with Rings to back up his old school style. Coaches like Keenan + Wilson (previously Burns, rip) don't belong in the new NHL... you just cant treat millionaire boys like boys anymore, got to treat them like 34% RockStars 33% Soldiers 33% Machines!

The fact is ANY Toronto coach would have wound up at the bottom of the list since the hockey world & the rest of Canada (especially people from Quebec, BC & Alberta) have always been jealous of the city of Toronto.

However, i do agree with your reference that old-school hockey coaches (like Wilson) have trouble keeping up with today's young NHL hockey players. But give Ron Wilson a veteran team & he'll likely take them deep into the playoffs.

Was just watching NHL Network and they mentioned a rumor that the Leafs were in trade talks to get Joe Thorton.... Brian Burke said there is no truth to the rumors however...... How sweet would that be if true tho? oh well....

I don't think Joe Thornton is fast enough to be on this team. He also wouldn't be the same player in Toronto since he wouldn't be surrounded by a bunch of superstars like he is in San Jose. I mean....having players like Dany Heatley & Patrick Marleau as your linemates must feel at times like you've died & went to hockey heaven! Put Tim Brent on that line & he'd likely pick up 70 pts per season!

I totally have to disagree with you on this one my Leafs Nation brother, true he is not a speed demon, but a player of his caliber makes EVERYONE around him better. He is not old at 31, still a good solid 3 years left, possibly 4 or 5. But it would all depend of course what would be dealt to the Sharks for him, but tell me he wouldnt make the power play ALOT better? tell me he wouldnt make Kessel alot more dangerous? tell me his leadership wouldnt be a perfect fit for these young guys? tell me his attitude wouldnt be a lift to any team? I would welcome a Joe Thornton with open arms as im sure Brian Burke would also, DEPENDING on what the Sharks want, somehow i have a feeling they would want Schenn and a few of the Leafs top prospects.... if thats the case, then keep thornton in san jose. I say give them Kaberle (yes i know it all depends on kabby) Clarke M, maybe a young D man and a young Offensive prospect in the system..

Anyways, Burke says there is not one bit of truth to it so it really doesnt matter i guess, but it was fun to ponder about. I wonder what Don Cherry would think about it, LOL.

Doc, I got to ask... did you forget to add a winky wink emoticon to the end of that sentence. u r kidding right. tell me u'r kidding!

If ur joking, pheeeew!
If not, FTW! Wilson's burned out. The whole world sees it except Burke. I'm sure if the roles were reverse Wilson would've fired Burke by now... Wilson's way too much bark for a guy who hasn't done much in recent memory.

Add the wink, add the wink! :)

You could be right: For every other province, GOLF season only starts AFTER the playoffs, so the avid golfers desperately wish they lived in Toronto, where golf season ALWAYS starts really early!

Congratulations to Johan "The Mule" Franzen of the great Detroit Red Wings. Although Johan is probably only about the fifth or sixth best player on a team with several future Hall of Famers (including first balloters Lidstrom and Datsyuk) he scored FIVE goals against the Sens last night. Congratulations Johan!
For those who wish to see how Johan compares to another NHL forward of EXACTLY the same size (6'3", 222 pounds), check out the free-for-all thread for a fascinating statistical comparison.

Great article from The Hockey News listing the Top 10 Over 40 Players of All Time.

As we all know, just about EVERY list of great players and teams is dominated by the Wings and/or the Habs. This one is no exception, as the Wings absolutely SHUT DOWN everyone else:

# 1: Gordie Howe - Who could argue? The WORLD ranks him as either the #1, #2, or #3 player of all time, and the other two players universally acknowledged as his ONLY peers (Gretzky and Bobby Orr) didn't make it to 40. The amazing Gordie Howe of course played until he was 52!

# 2 : Nick Lidstrom - Again, who could argue? The greatest non-Canadian player ever, the second or third best defenseman ever (behind only Bobby Orr and arguably Doug Harvey), the most respected player in today's NHL, and still the BEST d-man in the league as he nears his 41st birthday!

# 4 : Terry Sawchuk - arguably the best goalie ever and certainly in ANYBODY'S Top 5 of all time.

# 6 : Steve Yzerman - a super talented player, a super classy individual, one of the greatest players ever, one of the best leaders of all time, the longest serving captain of any major sports team in North American history, and the second best GM (behind only the great Kenny Holland) in today's NHL...and as a ROOKIE GM yet!

# 7 : Chris Chelios - 3 time Norris Winner, 3 time Cup winner, one tough, nasty SOB, and the second oldest player ever to play in the NHL...behind only the incomparable Mr. Hockey, Gordie Howe.

Bravo Red Wings!

Apparently serious consideration is being given to renaming a bridge between Windsor and Detroit in honor of the great Gordie Howe. Excellent idea and a fitting tribute to Mr. Hockey, who is revered not just in Hockeytown but everywhere by all intelligent fans of the sport.

Ok Ok ! I would argue about some of these but coming from a Detroit fan It's good stuff.
Your team has made the playoffs 20years in a row since 1990 which is better than any team in any North American pro sports.

You still need to win 13 Stanley cup to reach my Habs but hey ! at least you're a sure bet !
.... Just like the Leads are a sure bet ! :) for another reason.

The part he's kidding about is that people from Quebec being jealous of TO.
I'm still laughing at this one.

Unless you're on Planet Mars... we all know the Leafs screwed up once again totally.
Which is nothing to be jealous about.

That's one fact any Bandwagon fan like Mr. Hummer can't argue !

Full props to your Habs. Although I am a Detroit fan, I must admit that your Montreal Canadiens have by far the greatest record in the storied history of the NHL and they have - like the Wings - had a ton of great players (the Richards, Beliveau, Moore, Geoffrion, Robinson, Savard, Lapointe, Harvey, Plante, Lafleur,Cournoyer, Lemaire....and on and on). Hats off to them. And no wonder the Leafs are so jealous of both our teams.

No, spoken like an HONEST Wings fan who is capable of admitting the truth, namely that the Habs have the best record in the history of the NHL. Hey, I even have to admit that the Yankees (ptui!) have the best record in the history of baseball...and I sure as HELL am not a Yankees fan!

Yes I am. But since it seems to make you happy, you can call me a fan of any team you like...any team EXCEPT the Leafs in hockey and the Yankees in baseball.
