Couple of points here. First of all, definitely a dirty shot by Shelley on Boyce. I can see 4-6 games but definitely not 10-15.

Second, great job by Rosehill coming to the defense of his fallen comrade, got some nice punches in before getting totally winded and looking for the ref to stop the bout.
I have to agree with Special K here. In my opinion, Shelley will get 3 games. maybe 4. I agree that it was a good job by Rosehill to take on Shelley, but that was his job & you can bet that he would have been sent down to the Marlies this morning had he just stayed there & watched.

The thing people will have to understand is that even if those 'hitting from behind' plays are illegal, they will continue to happen, no matter what the lenght of the suspension is. Hockey is an instinctive & reactionary sport. Shelley obviously didn't mean to hurt Boyce, but his instincts got the better of him & he pushed him hard into the boards. You also have to remember that players also share responsibility in the fact they must not leave themselves gullible to such hits. I don't really know what Boyce was looking at, but he had no business admiring the play while facing the boards. Players must learn not to put themselves in gullible positions!

Anyways, i'm certain Rosehill knew how badly Shelley felt about the play, but both of them knew full well that it was their 'job' to drop the bloves in this case. It's a 'code of honor' type of thing.

Phillipe Dupuis might just make the team now that Boyce suffered a broken nose. Knowing Boyce, he'll make it difficult for the coaches to keep him out of the starting lineup. However, even if he does play, he won't be 100%. Plus the fact that Dupuis has played extremely well so far, and was a regular with the Avalanche lineup last season.

Sheriff Shanahan has made his ruling and suspended Shelley for 10 games!!! Well, 5 exhibition and 5 regular season, so I'd consider that a 5 game suspension.

I also think you nailed it on the head Doc in that the game is definitely instinctive and reactionary. I don't feel Shelley meant to hurt Boyce either and from watching the replay perhaps Boyce could have braced himself a tad better or avoided the brunt of the crushing hit with a little more awareness of his surroundings but of course that ain't easy in a speedy game like hockey.

Ouch, looks like i was spot on and it is a good thing for Chara that Shanahan was not in charge when he nailed Pacioreity last season.

I agree & also consider it a 5-game suspension since i don't count the preseason & consider it a fucking joke! Three quarters of the players in the lineup won't make the big team & we all know who they are....it's basically a game played by minor leaguers in order to make them feel like NHL players for a couple of weeks.

Needless to say, i rarely watch preseason games since i consider them to be a terrific waste of time....

Habs gotta move

all these Habs exhibition games are tiresome. They had better start playing their real roster soon or they will be unprepared for Opening Night.

Decided to make the trip to Buffalo last night for the Leafs/Sabres game. Most noticeable player on the ice for both teams was Jake Gardiner. Amazingly fast, great skater, hard shot, precise passing and not a bad defensive dman either. (he is able to pinch into the offensive zone a lot because of his excellent speed to get back on D) He has earned a spot on the D but with 7 already NHL Dmen on the team, he will most likely get some time on the Marlies, but will be first to be called up. Now i see why Brian Bukre agreed to take on Joffery Lupul's contract in the Beauchemin for Gardiner deal, it was the only way the Ducks would trade Gardiner, which btw was a Burke draftee in 2008 as the 17th overall pick. Good stuff :thumb:

Defense-desperate Habs sign Chris Campoli

Habs just signed defenceman Chris Campoli. Word around Mtl is that they're not happy with the current group of defensemen that they have. P.K. Subban's okay. Markov will miss a month or two....or more. His ailing knee hasn't completely healed yet. Josh Gorges & Hal Gill are exactly who they are: Josh Gorges & Hal Gill. Spacek is slowing down. The rest are so-so. With the likes of Hamrlik, Soppel, Wizniewski, Picard & Mara gone, there's not much left behind P.K. & the guys i mentionned.

I wonder: how did Andrei Markov wind up getting that guaranteed big fat contract during the off-season with that chronic bum knee? WTF?

Yea, Exactly!?

Seems Carey ole boy will have to stand on his head again this year "IF" the habs are to make the playoffs. All they added for offense this offseason was Eric Cole....... not exactly Wayne Gretzky, hell, not even Mike Cammy-larry, but should be good for 40 more points than scottie gomez. Price will likely play all 82 games to get the habbies into the playoffs.

Meanwhile things are moving quite quickly as opening night is a mere 10 days away that has the Canadiens at the ACC for a Clash with the Leafs.

As expected, Brendan Shanahan is doing a great job.

Shanny always did have a good head on his shoulders and his time in Detroit certainly helped - as it always does for anyone lucky enough to be affiliated with that fabulous organization.

Thank heaven Shanny is in charge - a really great change after the two clowns who did the job before him.

From Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun.....

How many times has Don Cherry screamed for the abolition of no-touch icing in hockey? How many times has he shown the injured victims on video on Hockey Night in Canada? And I wonder: Has hockey chosen to do nothing about this unneccessary part of the game because an old man on television shouts about this year after year? When it comes to some things — not necessarily fighting — Cherry stands out. He was a leader in the stop-patch movement, spoke out about equipment being too hard, but his pet peeve for a long time has been no-touch icing. At the expense of another injured player, Cherry was proven right again in his advocacy. The time to make that change was long ago.

Steve Simmons of the Toronto Sun on trash talk..........

For as long as there has been sport played at the highest level, there has been varying degrees of trash talk. Had those kinds of expressions been heard in open society, away from the games, it would offend most right-thinking people. But what’s happening now, with more media and more microphones, with analysts between benches of pro games, words are being heard, names are being called, and the discussion of what can and cannot be said has become real. But what needs to be understood, and seems lost in translation, is that the field of play in almost any sport, should not be confused with the rules of society. You cannot, walking down the street, plow your neighbour into a wall. In hockey, it’s called a body check. You cannot sack the paper boy, delivering late on your driveway. In football, that is part of the game. It is the same with words. What is spoken on the field has no relevance to real life and historically no real meaning, either. Confusing one with the other is unhealthy and basically unnecessary.

Sean Avery put on waivers

dynamic_resize

The New York Rangers placed forward Sean Avery on waivers Tuesday, according to NHL.com.

If another NHL team doesn't claim him within 24 hours of being placed on waivers, the Rangers can send the controversial forward to their affiliate in Hartford.

Avery was claimed off waivers by New York from Dallas on March 3, 2009. The Stars signed him to a four-year, $15.5 million deal in 2008.

According to NHL.com, Rangers head coach John Tortorella said he wanted to have just one extra forward on the roster, with the spot coming down to Avery and Erik Christensen.

Avery, 31, recorded three goals, 21 assists and 174 penalty minutes in 76 games last season.

"Hello Boys" and SexyNadya.

Greetings from lovely Toronto. Went to the game last night and the good guys came away with a 2-0 win over the habs. Let me say this about the habs, they better play Price 75 games this season if that want even a sniff of 8th place. The Leafs were without 3 of their better offensive players and still easily beat Les Habitants. :thumb: Nice to see a Montreal boy, Matthew Lombardi score in his first game back from a serious concussion.

Hello boyz & girl!!!!!

The Leafs are now 2-0 and lead the NHL with 4 pts. Phaneuf & Kessel have looked like the all-stars they are and Ron "The Great" Wilson has the Leafs playing like Cup contenders. Of course, they're a year older & picked up key players during the off-season during their journey towards bringing a Cup to Toronto. Their defence has to be one of the best in the NHL & I love the David "Faceoff King" Steckel pick-up.

They nearly have a week off & their next 3 games are at home. I'll be very happy if they win 2 out of 3, but don't be too surprised if they don't win 'em all.

My prediction of the week: The habs will be 0 for 2 after the weekend is over. Carey Price can't do it all by himself, can he?

And guess who did this to Mr. Campoli? None other than former hab, Mike Grabovski. Without even touching him! lol

Grabovski is looking great. Again. Although i've criticized Cliff Fletcher for making terrible deals in his 2nd stint with the Leafs, his acquistion of Grabovski for a roll of tape & a jock strap was a stroke of genius. Grabovski has since achieved all-star status. He's a gem.

By the way, have you noticed that the Leafs have as many Quebecers on the team than the Habs themselves?

Yep! How about Kessel tonight? first hat trick as a Leaf! This team started out great last yr and blew a tire in November,.... totally different feel this time around.... they are focused like never before, at least in the Burke/Wilson era! GO LEAFS GO!

I have to agree with you. If i remember correctly, they were going great last year until Phaneuf got that devastating injury (a deep cut to his back leg) against Ottawa. He had been playing very good & the team seemed to have hit a string of bad luck. Didn't they also lose the Monster or Giguere at around the same time?

They are so deep this year at every position, that i'm not worried whomever goes down.

Deep is not the word. They have more depth than any Leafs team has had in recent memory. There is such a different feeling about this Leafs team, also unlike any in recent memory. Up next, 3 more home games, Calgary, Colorado and Winnipeg. Could be 5-0 realistically heading into boston in 2 weeks. What others have failed to see in the mastermind that is Brian Burke will soon be seen by the haters.
