American here weighing in. What’s going on in this country is a slow and gradual decline of our institutions and generally, a less politically educated population for one that always showed apathy towards its one governmental outcomes (ie American election turnout). It’s an erosion of a middle class that has now become extremely tribal, with left and right entrenched, and the American conservative movement seizing an opportunity like the opportunistic grifters they have always been. Trump is the consequence not the cause. I hope I am wrong. Luckily my Canadian friends are a short drive or flight away during these crazy times!
bighead, as someone who is a neutral, middle of the road, old school American who has consistently voted for third party candidates since 2008, I think your analysis is correct. However, one thing you have left out is the divisiveness within the Democratic party, which is being controlled by the entrenched left wing you mention, but has a more moderate faction that used to be in control. It's a HUGE problem, and part of what led to Trump being elected:
Sharp divides over how to push back against Trump and Republicans have been laid bare in Congress, writes Anthony Zurcher.

The change in the Democratic party platforms and polarization of each party has driven many to feel there is no better alternative than Trump. In fact, he was the best alternative in the last election.
I am not sure Trump is an "opportunistic grifter", even if many in his party are. I think he is mainly motivated by the idea of "winning", and then taking credit for it. I think that some of the things he wants to do, look root out corruption in Washington and "drain the swamp", are laudable objectives, and I hope he does win. Whether he is going too far, well we will see.
It is called create as much chaos as you can and then be the one to solve it and in your own lunatic mind you are America’s hero and salvation.
Probably the weirdest and stupidest negotiation tactic any one ever thought up.
Hopefully countries will learn from this and never make the US their number 1 trading partner ever again including Canada or be so heavily dependant on them.
Although there may be some truth to some of what you say above, we need to wait and see how it all shakes out before we can make any conclusions about some of these policies.
