York Regional Police say they are investigating after a woman told police she was sexually assaulted by an Uber driver in Markham this morning.
The alleged incident is said to have occurred shortly after 3 a.m. near 16th Avenue and Woodbine Avenue.
The circumstances around the alleged assault are not clear and police have not said if charges are pending.
In a statement released by Uber Canada spokesperson Susie Heath, the company says they take every safety incident "very seriously."
"We ... are committed to the safety of everyone who uses Uber. As soon as we became aware of the investigation, we reached out to York Regional Police to offer our assistance," the statement says.
"Our safety response team is working quickly to gather information."

A Toronto man has been charged with sexual assault after a woman told police she was attacked by an Uber driver in Markham.

York Regional Police say a 34-year-old woman called for an Uber car to meet her near Yonge St. and Major Mackenzie Dr. in Richmond Hill, shortly after midnight Tuesday.

The driver picked the woman up and drove her to a parking lot in near 16th Ave. and Woodbine Ave. in Markham, where police say she was sexually assaulted.

Uber Canada spokesperson Susie Heath said in a written statement that the ridesharing company “take every safety incident very seriously and are committed to the safety of everyone who uses Uber.

“Upon hearing of this disturbing incident, we immediately removed the driver from the platform and contacted York Regional Police to offer our assistance and have supported them in their investigation,” she added.

Uber Canada said its drivers go through “a rigorous screening process” that includes background checks with the RCMP and local police.

Before they are picked up, passengers are sent information about their driver, including their name, photo, and vehicle make and model.

Uber trips are tracked via GPS, and passengers share their route and estimated time of arrival with other people.

“Unfortunately, incidents do happen as with all forms of transportation. That’s why we have a safety response team that is located in cities around the world and trained to deal with any critical safety issues that arise and are able to connect with law enforcement if necessary,” Heath wrote in an email to the Star.

“In responding to incidents, Uber can quickly deactivate riders’ and drivers’ accounts, preventing the parties in question from accessing the platform until the investigation is complete.”

Ahmadfayim Bayat, 30, has been charged with sexual assault. He was scheduled to appear in court for a bail hearing Wednesday.

I have took taxi very often in my life since i have no car, the only thing I want is get from point A to B safe and sound, I dont give a damm about a dress code, service will not be better in suit with a tie, I have worked 35 years for the government, I was always wearing jeans and T-Shirt, and the people who needed my help were more concerned about how quick their problem were resolved then the colour of my underwear.

Transport Minister Jacques Daoust met with cabinet today to discuss his Uber legislation, which is expected to be tabled next week.

There are reports the new bill will force UberX drivers to acquire taxi driver licences and permits that will restrict the number of vehicles on the road.

Uber warns the legislation would force it to cease operations in Quebec.

"Minister Daoust is looking to shut down Uber. He's living in the past and he wants to protect the status quo and the monopoly of taxis." says Uber Quebec General Manager Jean Nicolas Guillemette.

(Québec) Rien ne va plus pour Uber, qui s'apprête à fermer ses portes au Québec. Mais le maire de Montréal Denis Coderre ne versera pas de larmes: «Bye-bye! Salut! Ça me fait pas de peine du tout», a-t-il lancé.

«Uber, ce qu'ils nous disent, c'est que, pour rester, il faut que ça soit le "free-for-all". Ils nous disent: "C'est nous autres qui décidons." Pendant ce temps-là, ils ne paient pas de taxes ni d'impôts», a ajouté M. Coderre.

«Pour moi, les gens qui veulent travailler pour s'assurer qu'on puisse grandir et s'épanouir seront toujours les bienvenus, mais ceux qui vont arriver Gros-Jean comme devant, qui disent: "Me voilà, vous faites comme je veux", ça ne fonctionne pas», a conclu le maire.

Du côté d'Uber, c'était la consternation. «Depuis le début, le ministre [Jacques] Daoust voulait faire fermer Uber», a soutenu Jean-Nicolas Guillemette, directeur général de la firme au Québec. «M. Daoust a son idée faite depuis plusieurs semaines, il a choisi des choses avec lesquelles on ne pouvait plus opérer», à savoir un coût d'entrée important pour les chauffeurs et le contingentement des véhicules.

Québec exigera que les chauffeurs détiennent un permis de conduire de classe taxi, ce qui suppose un examen médical, un rendez-vous avec un médecin, «et on sait que c'est facile à Montréal», a ironisé M. Guillemette. On n'exigera pas un tel permis pour les bénévoles de l'Opération Nez rouge.


Pour Jean-Nicolas Guillemette, «le Québec s'isole», envoie un message ambigu aux entreprises de l'avenir. Uber a eu plus d'un demi-million de clients, pouvait compter sur 8000 chauffeurs, a-t-il souligné.

Autre obstacle, le projet de loi fixe un nombre maximal de véhicules, alors que le modèle d'Uber ne fonctionne que si la quantité d'autos fluctue selon la demande.

Le 3 février, le ministre des Transports avait pourtant dit qu'Uber «est là pour rester» comme phénomène social. Par la suite, il a été ouvert au lobby du taxi. «Ce n'est pas une surprise qu'aucun groupe de consommateurs n'ait été invité en commission parlementaire», a poursuivi M. Guillemette.

Entente

À la sortie du Conseil des ministres en matinée, le ministre Daoust avait confirmé qu'il avait fait approuver son projet de loi qui sera déposé à l'Assemblée nationale la semaine prochaine, juste à temps pour être adopté avant l'été.

«Il y a une entente complète au Conseil des ministres», a-t-il soutenu, bien qu'en coulisse on confie qu'il y a eu une longue partie de bras de fer entre M. Daoust et le titulaire des Finances, Carlos Leitao.

Le projet de loi a franchi hier matin le comité du développement économique et le comité ministériel de la législation. Demain, les députés libéraux de Montréal, où se trouve l'essentiel des appuis à Uber, seront réunis en caucus, pour qu'on leur explique la décision du gouvernement.

Plusieurs sources indiquent que le ministre Daoust avait, il y a deux semaines, menacé de claquer la porte si son projet de loi n'était pas adopté.

À l'époque, un comité interministériel avait accouché d'un plan d'action fort différent qui faisait une place à Uber.

Relancé par La Presse, M. Daoust a nié catégoriquement avoir menacé de démissionner. «J'ai l'appui du premier ministre depuis le début», a-t-il dit.

Au gouvernement, une source affirme le contraire. «Il a dit ça, mais personne ne l'a cru. C'était du positionnement. Son projet de loi est le fruit d'une négociation», résume-t-on. C'est la fermeture d'Uber aux compromis qui a forcé la main de Québec, explique-t-on. La multinationale ne fonctionne pas davantage à Vancouver, à Calgary et à Houston, rappelle-t-on.
