This is a little different than the usual STD thread. I was diagnosed with Central Serous Retinopathy (CSR), a (hopefully) temporary vision impairment and am posting to see if anyone else has experienced it:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Central_serous_retinopathy

My problems started about six weeks ago when I went to a local restaurant and could not read the menu. It was just a big blur. A week later, another restaurant, and for the second time I was not able to read the menu and had to have it read to me. Also, some legal docket calendars that I have been reading every Tuesday for the past 18 years, which look the same every week, came in one week and I suddenly could not read them. I immediately scheduled an appointment with an opthamologist because I knew something was wrong, as this all came on very suddenly.

The opthamologist tested my vision and told me my left eye was 20/20 but my right eye had substantially worsened from the last test. On the last test I was 20/20 in the left and 20/40 in the right, and now the right was 20/100. He also noticed some unusual changes in my right eye and referred me to a retinal specialist for further examination and testing,

The retinal specialist did some testing and took laser photographs of my retina. Pretty cool and totally painless. Anyway he spotted some fluid collected behind the retina in my right eyeball. He said he believes it to be CSR, and said it should eventually dissipate and my vision restore to what it was. I go back for more laser photographs in 5 weeks to see if the fluid buildup has dissipated. He said if it has not dissipated there could be bleeding of unknown origin and at that point,a fluoricine dye test would be necessary.

Apparently the cause of CSR is unknown but it is common in males ages 20-50 (I am in that age group) and especially in high stress professions. Airline pilots have a very high incidence of CSR.

Just wondering if anyone else experienced this and what the result was.

If only I knew...
Sorry to read that EB! I also had eyes problems and I know it's not fun and definitely stressful. Our eyes are very precious and we realize it even more when scary problems like that happen.

Sound like you were just in time, I'm glad to read that!

I had this a while back, I believe in 2003.

I was diagnosed exactly that and there was nothing to do except wait that it went away.
There was a some kind of a donut shadow in one of my eye.
As time went by, I don't remember if the donut shrunk to the center, or if its center got wider and lighter until it disappeared after a couple of months. But it was one of the two, fortunately.

This was a scary situation for me.

But since then, no more.

So I hope it will get better for you as well.

mtruc,

I don't have any donut shadow or floaters. The main problem seems to be restaurant menus suddenly got blurry on me. Since my original post I have been back to the retinal specialist, he did further testing and there is still fluid collected behind my right retina which has not dissipated. I am being sent to a second retinal specialist next week. They are wanting to do some kind of dye/fluorocine test in which some kind of dye is injected through an IV, and they can then isolate the source of the fluid leak. I am little nervous about having this test because I was told that a possible side effect is death via allergic reaction to the dye. Did you have this test done?

The good news is my situation has not gotten any worse. Things have stayed about the same or possibly gotten slightly better, but the fluid is still there, and the retinal specialist thinks it should have dissipated by now.

I immediately scheduled an appointment with an opthamologist because I knew something was wrong, as this all came on very suddenly.

The same thing happened to me about 4 years ago. I was in Mlt at the time & a few of us had decided to have dinner at 'Le Latini'. When i opened the menu, i couldn't read a bloody thing. I had to ask the person next to me to tell me what was on the menu. I felt this wasn't normal. I mean, eyes going drastically bad from one day to the next surely didn't sound normal. A few weeks later, i got checked by my optometrist & the first thing he asked me was my age. When i confirmed that was indeed past 40, he chuckled & said that this 'occurence' is quite normal in people once they past their 40's. I asked him if this meant suddenly not being able to read from one day to the next, and he confirmed that there was nothing abnormal about this. He didn't mention anything about seeing fluid behind the retina. He suggested that i purchase myself a cheap brand of reading glasses from the local pharmacy or at Walmart, which i did.

A month of so later, i had an appointment with an opthamologist who works for the CNIB. Based in Ottawa, he was quite surprised when i told him that the problem first came about on the night that i was having dinner at "Le Latini", since it's his favorite restaurant in Mtl & knows the owner. We then got into a long discussion about various restaurants in the Mtl area. He then finally told me that there was nothing to worry about. I was at an age where it was perfectly normal for me to have my eyesight decrease. When i asked him if it was normal for my eyesight to deteriorate from one day to the next, he said it was & the same thing happened to him. About the reading glasses, he recommended i increase the strenght to 1.50 & he himself used reading glasses purchased at a discount store.

What's strange in all of this is that my optometrist has since decreased the strenght of my prescription. My eyes didn't get any better, but the adjustment permits me to have an easier time reading. I've also noticed that my eyesight constantly changes from one year to the next.

Update- CSR Diagnosis Confirmed

The second retinal specialist I went to, in late October, did a special fluorocine test that showed I have 3 discreet areas of fluid leaks and confirmed my diagnosis of Central Serous Retinopathy, a/k/a CSR. The fluorocine test was done as follows in her office: they ran an IV and injected me with an orange dye, and then they rapidly took laser photographs of my eyeball. The photos showed 3 leakage areas. The two leakages that are closest to the retina sealed on their own, and are no longer active leaks. The one of the 3 leakage areas that appears to still be an active leak, which she called a "blister of fluid", was far enough away from the retina that the retinal specialist offered to do a procedure in which a special laser would be used to "burn" away the leak, or the "blister of fluid". Since the other leaks resolved on their own, I declined this treatment option. My vision has not gotten any worse and I am not going to do anything further unless it does. It is all stress related and should go away on its own.

If anyone has these symptoms of sudden blurriness and you are male aged 20-50 it could very well be CSR.

I was warned by the retinal specialist that this could end up being chronic where these leakages repeatedly develop and then self heal, which is the other reason why I declined further treatment at this time.
