Chloe (2010)

Last night, i finally decided to watch something i had saved up on my PVR a few weeks ago. It's a movie i had heard a bit about & considering it was directed by someone who's movies i generally like, Atom Egoyan, i decided to pvr it when it was shown on one of the movie channels. It stars Julianne Moore, Liam Neeson & the gorgeous Amanda Seyfriend in the role of "Chloe".

"Chloe" as the movie Liam Neeson was working on in Toronto when his late wife Miranda Richardson died in Montreal due to an earlier skiing accident on Mont-Tremblant. Early in the movie, a student of his sends him a text message saying "Thank you for last night.....Miranda xox". I wonder if this was added to the scene due to the infortunate tragedy, or was it part of the movie all along? None of the reviews i've read have mentionned this tidbit.

(However, i suggest that you watch the movie before reading Ebert's review)

You know this review made me want to watch the movie. i will check it out and thank you.

Lebanon is the story of the invasion of Lebanon as seen through the periscope of an Israeli tank. It is a non-political movie that brings to light Robert E. Lee's quote "It is a good thing that war is so terrible - other wise we would grow too fond of it."

In 1982 the tank crew crosses into Lebanon to support a platoon of infantry. they are not sure why they are there and who they are fighting. In one scene they take a Syrian Prisoner and they ask "what is he doing in Lebanon. In the next scene they are guided by a Phalangist from Turkey and one of the soldiers ask What's a Phalangist? An officer tells him He is a Christian and he is on our side. Seconds later the same officer is heard wondering what is Phalangist Turk doing here? The Phalangist hops in the tank to inspect the Syrian prisoner. He asks the tank crew if they speak Arabic. The crew replies "No." He than begins to describe to the Syrian prisoner how he will torture him later (after the Israeli’s turn him over to the Phalangist) in graphic detail. The Israelis do not understand a word.

In the fog of war the tank has a split second to decide what the military targets are and what the civilian targets are so they can avoid the latter. The movie puts you behind the trigger as the tank crew makes a series of miscues that cost the lives of civilians as well as fellow soldiers. You understand the guilt that many veterans feel after surviving combat.

In the trailer they call this movie the Das Boot of tanks. I agree and recommend but it is not a cheery Christmas movie. For that I recommend Jingle All the Way!

'Das Boot' is one of my favorite 'war' movies ever. Therefore, i can't wait to watch 'Lebanon'.

'Twilight' sequel leads Razzie Awards nominations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - If films starring Jennifer Aniston, Ashton Kutcher and the lovelorn cast of "Twilight" left you dumbfounded, you're officially in good company.

All are prominent contenders for the Razzie Awards, an annual competition honoring Hollywood's worst movies, actors and filmmakers, its organizer said Monday.

Now in their 31st year, the Razzies are run by California movie buff John Wilson's Golden Raspberry Foundation as an antidote to the self-congratulatory seriousness that engulfs Hollywood during Oscar season.

The winners, determined by 600-plus voters, will be announced during a Hollywood ceremony Feb. 26, the day before the Oscars are handed out. Not surprisingly, most honorees do not attend. Notable exceptions included Sandra Bullock last year for "All About Steve," and Halle Berry in 2005 for "Catwoman." Coincidentally, they went on to win Oscars the next day, albeit for different films.

"The Twilight Saga: Eclipse," the latest installment in the hit franchise about vampires and werewolves, led this year's Razzie field alongside "The Last Airbender," director M. Night Shyamalan's 3D martial-arts fantasy. They each received nine nominations.

"Sex and the City 2," depicting the latest sexual adventures of four aging women, followed with seven nominations.

All will vie for worst picture along with Aniston's romantic comedy "The Bounty Hunter," and the critically reviled parody "Vampires Suck," which both received four nominations.

Aniston will compete for worst actress on the strength of her roles in both "Bounty Hunter" and "The Switch," another unloved romantic comedy. The "Sex and the City" foursome -- Sarah Jessica Parker, Kim Cattrall, Kristin Davis and Cynthia Nixon -- received a collective nomination.

The field was rounded out by Miley Cyrus ("The Last Song"), Megan Fox ("Jonah Hex") and Kristen Stewart ("Twilight"). For Cyrus it will be a family affair since her father, Billy Ray Cyrus, was nominated for his supporting role in "The Spy Next Door."

Kutcher was cited for worst actor, also for two movies -- "Killers" and "Valentine's Day." Aniston's "Bounty Hunter" co-star Gerard Butler, also made the cut, as did "Twilight" stars Taylor Lautner and Robert Pattinson.

For a full list of nominees, go to http://www.razzies.com.

I recently saw True Grit. This is a Cohen brother’s remake of the old 60's classic western. The original western stared John Wayne as rooster Cogburn and Glen Cambell as La Boeuf the Texas Ranger. In the latest version Jeff Bridges (The Dude from the Big Labowski) plays Cogburn and Matt Damon plays the Texas Ranger. The Cohen Brothers remake pretty much follows the John Wayne version (I am told both version pretty much follows the book). Of course the Cohen brothers injected some of their patented weirdness in several scenes. Some of these twists added little to the story line but did entertain the die hard cult of followers that are addicted to the Cohen brother's sense of black humor. Some examples are Jeff Bridges kicking the Indian children off the porch, the hanged body that was cut down and given to an Indian and then purchased by a back woods Dr, the backwoods Dr. in the Bear Skin etc. Hailee Steinfeld stole the show as the young Mattie Ross. The Movie begins with Hailee’s character outwitting one of her deceased father's business partners for compensation for her father's horse and ponies. The Movie ends in typical Cohen Brothers fashion with an anti climax and a big let down. Several years after Rooster saves Mattie's life, the older Mrs. Ross, now a one armed spinster, goes to the Bill Cody Wild West show to see Cogburn and pay him the balance of the reward money she owes him only to learn from one of the Younger Brothers and Frank James that Rooster Cogburn recently passed. Another patented weird ending.

Jeff Bridges plays an outstanding Rooster Cogburn and Matt Damon does a good job as the Texas Ranger. Both men fought for the Confederate side in the Civil war. In one scene Damon’s character (La Boeuf) criticizes Cogburn for riding with Quantrell’s Raiders, a band of border ruffians and cold blooded killers while La Boeuf fought along side the respected General Kirby Smith, who fought an honorable conventional campaign in the western theater. In the original version the outlaws were played by Ned Pepper and Dennis Hopper. The new version's outlaws are just as nasty.

This movie is certainly worth seeing.

I saw 'True Grit' a couple of weeks ago. I liked it, but the fact i had seen the John Wayne version kind of spoiled the movie for me since it's pretty much the same story. Both Haiey Steinfeld & Jeff Bridges got Oscar nominations for this movie, which also got a nod in the best movie category. Wouldn't it be ironic if Bridges wins the best actor nod? Over 40 years after John Wayne won his Oscar for his portrayal of Rooster Cogburn in the original version of 'True Grit'? My gut-feeling tells me Colin Firth will get the award, however, Oscar has a knack for being sentimental at times. Would the academy give Bridges the Oscar so soon after he got it for 'Crazy Heart'? I doubt it very much.

Hailey Steinfeld should have been nominated in the best actress category, not 'supporting actress'. She dominated the movie being in pretty much every single scene.

I'm surprised "The Town" didn't get nominated for best movie. At least Jeremy Renner got a nod in the best supporting actor category. Great movie by Ben Affleck!

Bridges did a good job and he is really starting to show his range as an actor...from the pot smoking Dude in Labowski to the drunken country singer in Crazy Heart to a drunkin US Marshal in True...wait a second - Bridges is always fucked up in his best roles. Much more range than Denzal Washington who says "There you go...." with his head bobbing up and down every role he plays.

Supporting actress?? really?? Well if she was "supporting" than she ought to win. It wouldn't have been much of a picture without her.

I can vouch for Doc on this. I saw it on DVD and I loved it.

Denzel Washington seems to play the same character in movie after movie.

I loved Jeff Bridges' performance in "Arlington Road", one heck of a creepy homegrown terrorist movie. Tim Robbins & Joan Cusack were also very good. I loved the movie, which i've seen many times.

The good thing about Hailey Steinfeld getting a nod for best supporting actress instead of the best actress nomination is that she'll probably have a better chance to win. I'm fairly certain Natalie Portman has the best actress Oscar in the bag. I was disappointed to see that Christopher Nolan didn't get a best director nod for "Inception", which in my opinion was brilliantly directed. Leo DiCaprio also could have got a nomination in the best actor category for that movie. He was brilliant in it. Same goes for Diane Lane who was great in "Secretariat".

agree about G. Rush not being nominated for Best Actor instead of Best Supporting.
its his movie as much as Firth's. but its all politics.
Miramax with Harvey Weinstein did not finance the movie but they were brought in to distribute it and get Oscar nominations for everyone involved. That is what they do best.
putting Firth and Rush in the same category would cancel each other out.
Miramax got Gywenth Paltrow an Oscar for Shakespeare in Love,' they know how the game is played.

if you want to see a movie that will kick you in the stomach but also rise your dick,
go see BLUE VALENTINE with Michele Williams and Ryan Gosling.
in different scenes, she shows tit ,gets pounded from behind and he goes down on her in a long hot realistic scene.
there is also dialogue in the movie that really hits home.

during the sex scenes the crowded movie theatre I was in got super quiet and you could notice people were getting into it.
during the arguement scenes, there was alot of improv between the two actors,
and you would think this is reality tv, but in a honest intense way.
but you must pay attention as the movie is not in a straight time line.
it moves back and forth and back and forth to different times in their relationship.

I believe the two actors lived together for three months prior to filming in order to set the tone for their acting performances (Method actors!). Now i wonder if they didn't also have sex. :D

I watched Blue Valentine last night. Kind of a depressing movie. Ryan Gossling's character is so damn fucking annoying! There are two phases to his character, one being the younger one when he first met the Michelle Williams character, then the present one, six years later. The movie keeps flashing back n' forth to the past n' present. I like the physical transformation we see in the characters. I read somewhere that's it's much easier to portray a character when he's 26 and 66 in the same movie as when he's 26 and 32. I couldn't agree more, since people do change other than just physically & portraying the slightest changes in a period of six years is so difficult to pull off. However, both Michelle Williams and Ryan Gossling are extremely convincing. It's easy why the both of them gathered so many nominations in this winter's various movie awards competitions. Gossling definitely should have got a nom for the Oscars, however, it's the norm for these awards. Heck, even Christopher Nolan didn't get a nom for best director at the upcoming Oscars. His movie "Inception" should have won him the director's nod hands-down, if you ask me.

The title of the movie Blue Valentine is fitting: it's one of the 'blue-est' movies i've seen this year. It's a well-made movie, with very good dialog & great acting performances. However, it's the type of movie you won't want to watch again unless you're contemplating suicide. I give this movie 3 stars out of 5, but only because of the great acting performances.

The Kids Are Alright

This was the second movie i watched last night & i'm glad i did. After watching the depressing 'Blue Valentine', getting to watch 'The Kids Are Alright' was a much-needed breath of fresh air. It's a heck of a good movie to watch! It has love, friendship, sex, humor, drama, heartache, etc.

It stars Annette Benning, Mark Ruffalo & the always wonderful Julianne Moore. The real stars of the movie are the two unknown actors portraying the two children. Benning & Moore portray a lesbian couple who raise two children. They each gave birth to each kid by being artificially insaminated with the Ruffalo character's sperm. Ruffalo's character had sold his sperm to a sperm bank many years earlier & had no idea it had been used until one day when a young teenage girl & boy show up at his door after contacting him & giving him the news.

He's actually happy to learn that he's a dad & the kids take a liking to him. He's the hippy type with no worry in the world, agreeing to go along as the kids want him to meet their parents. We later discover that the Benning/Moore couple are undergoing marital problems like many married couples do. It's interesting to see this from a lesbian couple perspective. I've never actually realized until now that gay couples go through similar maritial problems that straight couples go through.

I really enjoyed this movie & the only negative is the ending. It leaves room for a sequel & i really hope one will be made. I give this movie 4 stars out of 5.

The King's Speech

I watched "The King's Speech" last week. Good movie, but not for everyone. Great acting performances by Colin Firth, Helena Bonham-Carter & Geofrey Rush. Geoffrey Rush could also have been nominated for the 'best actor' Oscar since in all honesty, he's the main character in the movie. However, as we've seen happen in the past, they likely would have received near-equal amounts of votes for one another, which would have cancelled each of them for the top honor, so it's a good thing that the category in question (best actor) only has one of the movie's actors. For example, if it wasn't for Christian Bale's great performance in "The Fighter", Mark Wallberg likely would have received a nomination. Bale's great performance kind of undermined Wallberg's. Speaking of acting performances, i find it quite surprising that Leonardo Di Caprio didn't get nominated for his tour-de-force in "Inception". Di Caprio is to acting today what Brando once was for his generation.

The movie deals with the future king's severe speech handicap: he stammers. Boy, does he ever! The poor guy can't speak a single sentence without stammering badly. His wife, played by Helena Bonham Carter & later known as the Queen Mum, contacts an Australian speech therapist portrayed by Geoffrey Rush, who has experienced considerable success with his unorthodox techniques. Since many therapists the future king has seen have all been failures, she figured she had nothing to lose by getting the Geoffrey Rush character to work with her husband, played by the great Colin Firth.

The movie shows us various speech therapy sessions involving both the Rush & Firth characters, but we also get a glimpse of history developing in the background. We see an old & dying King George V, the future princes & kings (Edward & Albert) and what led to Albert (also known as 'Bertie') accessing to the thrown, quite unexpectedly to become George VI, who also happened to be the father of Elizabeth (Elizabeth II) & Margaret. The Queen Mother character (Helena Bonham Carter) is also quite enduring & it's no surprise why she was one of England's most beloved queens.

It's a very good movie & in my opinion likely will win the Oscar for best picture. My personal choice would have been to give the Oscar to the great movie "Inception". However, it didn't even gather an nomination. Another great movie that should have deserved a nomination, which i found superior to 'The King's Speech', was Ben Affleck's "The Town". However, that's Hollywood for you. The Academy Awards have & always will be a popularity contest. Colin Firth should be the hands-on favorite in the best actor category. However, it's a movie dominated by the great Geoffrey Rush's performance. Has this underrated, great actor ever done badly in a role? I give this movie 4 stars out of 5.

Hello all,

Body of Lies (Leonardo DiCaprio)
Man On Fire (Denzel Washington)

Just saw these on dvd recently. Both are gritty, very violent, underworld (Spy/Security) suspense dramas with sentimental tension worth seeing...if this is your taste.

Eastern Promises (Viggo Mortensen)

DVD. Low key, fairly tense suspense, about the Russian Mafia underworld in London. Some Brutal violence. Nothing spectacular, but a fair diversion.

Cheers,

Cheers,

Merlot
