Have you seen NORTH BY NORTHWEST, Doc? An absolute gem. Cary Grant. James Mason. Eva Marie-Saint was absolutely gorgeous. One of Hitchcock's very best.

Yeah, i've seen it a dozen times. It's among my favorites along with Psycho, Vertigo, To Catch a Thief, Rear Window, The Torn Curtain & The Birds, among others.

Where I belong.
I've seen both, as well as Saboteur, the Skin Game, Rich and Strange, Rebecca, Spellbound, Dial M for Murder and many, many more of Hitch's films. While those films I like, I still stand by my opinion that he finally brought his A game starting with VERTIGO in 1958 (mind you, his C-Game is most other current filmmakers' magnum opus...
Well, let's go!!! It's showing at Cinema du Parc next Friday. 24 film Hitchcock retrospective starting that night. Always best on the big screen.

HOWEVER, the poster and the weekly pdf schedule both say the Retrospective doesn't start until Feb 10, so something is amiss.

You can count me in for a Hitchcock retrospective. I'd love to see North by Northwest on the big screen or any other of his films really. Speaking of great old films, I picked up Goldfinger on Blu-ray for 5 bucks at the Boxing week sales. Probably the best of the Bond films and the video quality is fantastic. They did a great job on the restoration.

Bond films such as Goldfinger, Dr. No & From Russia With Love are indeed classics. However, my favorite Bond film of all-time is 'Casino Royale', with Daniel Craig & Eva Green. I never get bored watching it over & over. I compare it to 'From Russia With Love' in terms of style. No nonsense, no bullshit....very un-Bond-like. Both great movies & among my two favorites of all time.....among all movies!

Actually bought the New Planet of the Apes flick and I'm sorry I wasted the $$. ...

i actually enjoy it but it was running a little long. they couldve edited out a number of scenes with apes running around... they bashed us over the head with "the apes are on the loose and wreaking havoc on the citizens eveybody run... "

next time, if you're not sure about wasting $$ on a flick, just stream part of it via one of many streaming sites... i use zmovie.tv these days.

Doc,

We've never agreed on a lot, but I have to admit your taste in movies, video, etc...etc.. is outstanding. I couldn't have put it better regarding Bond. Opinions were EXACTLY as I would have loved to have said. The great things about Casino Royale were the plot and character development. The plot twisted and turned keeping the viewer interested to the very end. The camera work was also more "up to date".

I'll always remember the first "love scene" in "From Russia with Love". You might remember that I wrote my first review of Samy with that movie as the theme.....LOL

Thanks,
CS

E,

Right on the money with your opinions. They were so hyped up on the action that they almost forgot the story.

Quantum of Solace was a bit of a disappointment, but today i realize that the disappointment is like due to the fact that 'Casino Royale' was so great. QS was a sequel to CR. I realized after seeing it how brilliant & original the idea of continuing the story from the moment CR ended into the intro of QS. Maybe i'll have to watch it again this weekend.....actually, i should watch both back-to-back. I own both movies in blu-ray and have yet to watch them at home.

I likely was a bit too harsh on my initial evaluation of Quantum of Solace. Considering that few sequels are better than the first movie, i shouldn't have been surprised at my initial disappointment in the movie. The only sequel that comes to mind that i found either superior or 'as good' as the first movie was the Godfather Part II, one of my all-time favorites along with The Godfather.

That's the thing about sequels: I can't wait for them to come out, and i usually rush to the theatre when the sequel is released. However, i'm usually always somewhat disappointed when i leave the theatre once the movie is over.

By the way, i absolutely loved the recent "The Thing". The one with Kirk Russell (directed by John Carpenter) is one of my all-time favorite horror flicks, and i was curious how the new version would do. I loved it, and loved it even more once i researched the movie later on & discovered that the story is actually a prequel to the John Carpenter version.

p.s. I also liked the one made in the 50's, but it doesn't compare to the John Carpenter version. Better character development, special effects, etc.

This decade or even the last one. Casino Royale is too commercial for me. I love movies like The Usual Suspects, Memento, Pusher 1,2 and 3 ( this one is amazing, it's about the underworld in Copenhagen, Denmark ), A prophet ( epic film about a wannabe gangster imprisoned in France and life inside that prison, fucking crazy movie, you all should watch it, no one will regret it, i promise, take lovemaker's word.) and True Romance, etc. Movies that are a little less cliche, basically anything fucked up lol. I have to be really shocked or at the edge of my seat anticipating what will happen next, in order for me to continue watching the movie. Thanks Shijak

Watched LIMITLESS (2011) on Netflix today. Depite an interesting plot, the execution, screenplay, character development, supporting actors all left me flat. Worth the price I paid (monthly $8.99).........

Conviction (2010)

I watched this movie on Netflix this past weekend. It's a very good movie, based on a true story.

A working mother puts herself through law school in an effort to represent her brother, who has been wrongfully convicted of murder and has exhausted his chances to appeal his conviction through public defenders.

It stars Hillary Swank & Sam Rockwell in the lead roles. The part of DNA lawyer Barry Scheck is played by Peter Gallagher. The movie is directed by Tony Goldwyn.

BTW, the confusion at Cinema du Parc has been cleared up. The Hitchcock retrospective is February 10-March 1. The schedule will be posted later.

The Double (2011)

I watched this movie last night. It stars Richard Gere & Topher Grace. It's about a retired CIA operative (Gere) who's paired with a young FBI agent (Grace) to unravel the mystery of a senator's murder, with all signs pointing to a Soviet assassin. It was directed by Michael Brandt & viewers usually gave it a 6/10 rating on average.

I enjoyed the movie, but i found it confusing at times & had to rewind some scenes to watch them again in order to get a good grasp of the story. I don't necessarily recommend it to the serious moviegoer, but i doubt people will be left too disappointed if they chose to view it.

The problem with this movie is that there are way too many movies of this kind that have been released over the past decade or so. It's an old, recycled formula.

Next on my list:

War Horse

Just saw the new Sherlock Holmes movie. Really enjoyed the first one, but was a little disappointed with this sequel. It was OK, but not much character development, and the dialogue between Robert Downey Jr. and Jude Law wasn't as good. Lots of action though.

Dutch Film "Bride Flight" 2011. Billed as a lush visual for the eyes, this film really shows off New Zealand in this post-war era film. Subtitled almost 80 percent of the time, the first third of the film quickly lays out the central premise. Be ready to watch intently as they fly though the dialogue at a record pace. Once the stage is set, the film slows down to a more leasurely gate (almost too much so). Watch for the symbolism throughout, as the story turns to a predictable pleasant conclusion.

This Danish Dirctor's extensive use of natural lighting throughout was absolutely brilliant & spectacular, in the vein of Ingmar Berman's films. As Bergman's films usually did, the plot takes you on a journey of discovery with the existential questions of mortality, loneliness, and religious faith. Reminded me of the type of film that would be shown in my college film class.....does anyone remember, "They Shoot Horse's Don't They?"

Rating: :thumb::thumb::thumb::thumb: (Nice Sex Scenes)

P.S. Dutch films make extensive use of nude & sex scenes, and this one was not an exception.....
