I saw Clint Eastwood's GRAN TORINO today and it was a total breath of fresh air after so many months of underperforming films. Never have I laughed so much at such a constant gushing of racial slurs (you will too :) ). Senior citizen Clint plays a surly recently-widowed vet surrounded by a potential powderkeg of violence (he adroitly plays with his own movie past as we keep expecting him to go all Dirty Harry on multiple street gangs).

"The Curious Case of Benjamin Button" -

Long movie but the concept was cool, a man, Brad Pitt, who ages backwards. It had a Forrest Gump feel to the movie because of it's approach of a "special" child whom we grow with.

Recommended to bring a chick to. ;)

I recently watched Changeling with Angelina Jolie and found it to be excellent. On the other hand, I found Brad Pitt's new movie to be too long and boring.

I enjoyed Righteous Kill with DeNiro and Pacino. I was surprised at the ending which doesn't happen to me too often.

Eagle Eye was just stupid and probably the worst movie I've seen this year.

My favorite movie of the year was In Bruges. A very dark comedy starring Colin Farrell which few people have probably seen or even heard of but is well worth seeking out. It may just earn him an Oscar this year or at the least a Golden Globe.

yeah, in Bruges was pretty good,

-i just finished viewing War, inc. a satire about war and buisness staring and coproduced by John Cusack who would have thought! i quite enjoyed it!

-Continuing with the Cohen brothers, their lattest, Burn after reading wont become a classic, but still a pretty funny movie, more in the lighter style of raising Arizona and their remake of The ladykillers. Not neir as good as the masterpiece, Fargo, or the nearly flawless adaptation of No country for old men...
still, a good cast, some pretty funny characters, and a plot that's over the top but fun to see unwind.

-at the first occasion i'm going to go check out Danny Boyle's Lattest: slumdog millionaire, should be a good one...

Another one I forgot to mention was The Wrestler with Micky Rourke. Great performance by Rourke as well as by Marisa Tomei in an excellent portrayal of an aging stripper trying to make a few last bucks. I expect both of them to be up for Oscars.

Frost-Nixon was also a great film and I was surprised that Frank Langella could pull off a convincing Nixon. Look for him at Oscar time also.

I haven't had time to watch Valkyrie or Revolutionary Road yet. Maybe I'll get around to them tomorrow. I'm so backlogged in watching my downloads it isn't funny.

thanks Johnmbot for reminding me of this movie i wanted to see...

got to see it today, great movie, highly recommended...
Boyle's clever, hip, video-clip-style is tuned down a bit to make place for a grander style with great images of the different faces of India. the plot structure keeps you in it from biggining to end. To me it's on par with trainspoting and shallow grave. It even made me forget is less then great tentative at si-fi (sunshine).

Where did you see this, T? It's in limited release and on very few screens so far. Great opening number by The Boss.

It's playing here
http://www.cinemamontreal.com/aw/crva.aw/que/Montreal/e/25779/The_Wrestler.html

I saw the movie the Valkrie with Tom Cruise. I had read accounts surrounding the events of July 21, 1944 and so it was more interesting for me to see the historical aspect unfold in a movie than Cruise`s acting, and it was distracting to hear all the german general staff speaking english with British accents. Couldn`t they have found German actors instead

I downloaded it using torrent. Same thing with Benjamin Button, Changeling, etc... I'm fed up with paying 15 bucks for a coke and a popcorn. Dinner and a movie used to be a cheap date, now it costs around 150 bucks for two and that's with a cheap dinner and a couple of drinks at the Cage.

I'll go to the cinema with a gf once or twice a month but she is not interested in all the movies I want to see so those ones I dl and watch at home. Not to mention movies like Wall-E and Bolt that I would be too embarrassed to go to the theater to see with all the kiddies. :p

Just finished watching Bolt actually and while it is a great animated film, I think that Wall-E will take that award at Oscar time.

Colin Farrell just won the Golden Globe for Best Actor in a Comedy or Musical for his role in In Bruges. Nice to see this excellent movie get some publicity. It is really worth watching!

And Micky Rourke wins for Best Actor in a Drama for the Wrestler. Well deserved for a great performance!

This past week i've seen:

Gran Torino, The Curious Case of Benjamin Button, The Wrestler, Defiance, Frost/Nixon & Changeling.

Of those films, i preferred 'Changeling'. Brilliant performance by Angelina Jolie in a very moving true story directed by Clint Eastwood. The most entertaining of those was 'Gran Torino', also directed by Clint Eastwood. However, it wasn't the best of the bunch since some of the acting stunk. The best acting performance of the year has to go to Mickey Rourke in 'The Wrestler'. Very good movie, but kind of depressing. But you have to see it simply to see Rourke's masterpiece in acting. Oh yeah, Marisa Tomei plays a stripper & you get to see her in the nude several times. She has a great body, i must say. I also really liked 'The Curious Case of Benjamin Button', but the movie was a bit long....about 2 hrs and 40 minutes in length. It was a very well-done movie, but the fact it slightly deviated from the book caused me to have some question marks by the end of the movie. I won't say what they are since i'll spoil the ending for those who haven't seen it. As for 'Defiance', i was left a bit disappointed. I'm a big fan of WWII movies & expected more.....however, it was still a good movie. As for Frost/Nixon, it was a very enjoyable movie, but i'm not sure if it as 'Oscar worthy'. It's difficult for me to imagine people unaware of the Nixon/Watergate era having any valid interest to watch that movie, but i could be wrong.

By the way, when it was announced that Mickey Rourke had won the Golden Globe tonight, i jumped out of my lazyboy & let out a loud 'yeah!!!' They sure got that one right!! What a performance!!!

Have you forgotten dark knight? Wow!!!! a masterpiece. If you can get over the pop aspect of this film. The perfomance of heath ledger is incredible. The joker being what it is, an incredible force of pure evil. Great acting work. He steal the show.

At first i watch this movie with a lot of apréhension. Ledger death, méga production etc... but when i start it. pppfffff two and a half hour of pure enterteinment.

The wrestler is a really good movie. I am a former wrestler myself and this film really hit the spot.

I agree with you that 'The Dark Knight' was a fantastic action movie. But those types of films rarely are recognized when it comes time to hand out awards. I agree that Heath Ledger's performance was fabulous. However, if he hadn't had unexpectedly passed away, i question on whether or not he even would have been nominated. He'd been brilliant in various roles over the years & I think of 'Brokeback Mountain' & "Four Feathers" when mentionning this. I watched "Four Feathers" a few months ago & realized then what a great acting talent the world lost so prematurely. I'm a bit surprised Ledger's nomination came in the 'best supporting' category since he dominated the Batman movie, but i'm glad it happened this way since i so wanted both him & Mickey Rourke to win.

He doesn't have nearly enough screen time to qualify for best actor category. But you can put Oscars in the bank for Ledger and Rourke. One promising actor dies and one aging almost forgotten actor makes a comeback. Hollywood just loves these stories. Not that they aren't deserving though.

I recently saw the Curious Case of Benjamin Button. Some parts of it are obvious, like how similar a person is at both ends of life (baby & old age). It did get me wondering though if the vigor and promise of youth is wasted early in life. It seemed to me like Brad Pitt's character enjoyed his youth far more when it arrived later in life, even though being out of sync with everyone else sucked.

Has anyone seen "Che" yet? I know it has had only limited release so far but I am curious if its worth watching in the theater when its officially released.

I have seen only the first half of Che, it will be released in two parts on DVD similar to Kill Bill because of it's length.

The first half is excellent, ending when the Cuban revolution does. Most of the dialog is in Spanish with subtitles but it is easy to follow even if, like myself, you don't speak Spanish. I can't vouch for the accuracy of the tale, but it does portray him as a hero while other accounts I've read in the past did not. Whatever side you believe, it is an interesting film to see and I would definitely recommend it.

I read a few months ago during the TIFF that 'Che' was a descent movie, however it was way too long. The reviewer liked the first half of it, then found it extremely long & boring once the Cuban revolution was done with.

I'm about to start watching "Slumdog Millionaire". I've heard nothing but fantastic comments about the movie & will report once i'm done watching it.
