"Movies That Might Have Been Awesome, Or Not"....

The Beatles actually tried making a Lord of the Rings movie in the 1960s.
I heard this on CBC and thought this was a joke. But no, it was a serious attempt. John was the main driver, he wanted to be Gollum. Paul would be Frodo, Ringo would be Sam, and George would be Gandalf.
They wanted Kubrick to direct but he was too busy. They made such a mess of the script that Tolkien himself stopped the project. At the time Tolkien still had film rights and it would have made a fortune for him, so it must have looked very bad indeed.
It would be nice to have had some LotR themed Beatles songs!

Led Zeppelin had various songs that were homage to Tolkien. Check the songs "Ramble On", "Misty Mountain Hop" and "Battle of Evermore."

'Hacksaw Ridge' may even be better. I give it 5 out of 5 stars and i highly recommend this great movie.

p.s. Vince Vaughn may also get a best supporting actor nod for his role as the platoon leader.

I saw this one the day it came out and reported right back. I thought the first part, before getting to Okinawa, was good but it was much better later. The action scenes are probably the toughest and most gory ever in a realistic setting. I consider the actions by the hero the most courageous I've ever scene. No one with a gun was ever braver or carried out his duties more unselfishly, far beyond what anyone could imagine a man could do. It's like running into a burning building that can fall on you any moment to save someone else and doing it 75 times. Miraculous.

Vince Vaughn was a surprise in his part. He carried it off extremely well.

Overall I'd say Braveheart was better because it was excellent from end to end. Hacksaw Ridge is great but okay in the beginning and better as it moves along, until it leaps into unbelievable in the battlefront scenes. I'd give it 8.5 to 9 out of 10 as a whole. But a 10 from the court marshal forward.

I had to see Hacksaw Ridge and it did not disappoint. Enclosed is a link to a helpful website so that one can separate fact from fiction. The most unbelievable scenes are true. In fact, in the end when Doss kicked the grenade back at the enemy he was also shot but Gibson cut out the shooting because he thought it was too unbelievable.

I went with a friend and we both felt that the infantry men were too bunched up. They would of never been that concentrated because one mortar could have taken out the company. An advancing squad could take up a football field or two... but what do I know? Also, the Japanese stopped the banzai charges after New Guinea or at about the time of Peleliu. The Japanese high command felt that they were making things easier for the Marines and US Army when they made a banzai charges. Instead, the Japs were ordered to wait and let the enemy advance past them and then infiltrate the enemies position at night. There were still some rogue or impromptu Banzai charges but it looked like that was what they were showing on the ridge. Still, it was outstanding. I liked the interviews with the real characters at the end.

If you would like to do further reading on the subject I can recommend a few very good books.

With the Old Breed: On Peleliu and Okinawa by EB Sledge. This is the best combat memoir ever written. I've read it a few times. It may give you nightmares. Hacksaw Ridge is covered somewhat on Okinawa. The book is EB Sledge's combat memoir and it is disturbing.

Ian Toll's trilogy on the war in the Pacific. Part 1: Pacific Crucible and Part 2: The Conquering Tide. Part 3 has not been released. These are well researched and the most current trilogy on the war in the Pacific. They are hard to put down.

I saw two movies today:

Arrival

I was extremely disappointed with this movie. To put it simply: It was fucking boring!

There is not a chance in hell that anyone will see this movie twice! People, fucking boring! I haven't seen a more boring movie since 'Plan 9 from Outer Space.' I give it 2 out of 5 stars only because my fellow classmate Denys Villeneuve directed this movie. We used to call him 'Denny Newtown' back then. Avoid, avoid, avoid! Keep your $13 and wait until it comes out on Netflix.

The Girl On the Train

Very, very good movie! Very well made, very well told, very well acted. Based on a best-selling mystery novel, Emily Blunt gives an Oscar-worthy great performance in this movie playing the part of a neurotic alcoholic divorcee. I saw this movie immediately after watching the very disappointing 'Arrival' and trust me, this movie is 50 times better! Only a delusional and gullible Donald Trump voter would think otherwise. I rate 'The Girl On the Train' 4 stars out of 5 and recommend it highly!

Doc, which theater is still showing this movie ? My usual Guzzo des Sources removed it and I thought it's also the case everywhere.

Sully

I've seen a lot of movies this week. Earlier i saw "Sully", which stars the great Tom Hanks and Aaron Ekhart in a true story about the hero pilot who flew a commercial aircraft on NY's Hudson River just a few years ago.

To my surprise, the old man who once spoke with a rocking chair at the RNC directed this movie. To be honest, i really liked this movie and would watch it again. It's definitely not as good as Hacksaw Ridge and The Girl On The Train, but it's better than The Accountant and miles more entertaining that the extremely disappointing 'Arrival' movie, all movies that i saw during a movie-binge recently.

I recommend 'Sully' and give the movie 3 1/2 out of 5 stars.

I was extremely disappointed with this movie. To put it simply: It was fucking boring!

I cautioned about reading the reviews carefully. I also did say it was cerebral and there was very little action.

If you don't have a big curiosity and emotional reaction about the mystery of meeting aliens and what it could mean to human existence before going you're going to be bored. As I said before, some in the theater when I went made it clear they were quite disappointed. I'm sure there were others who felt the same but were not so openly vocal.

I admit that i mustn't have read your review. But i probably would habe went to watch it anyways. I loved 'ET' and 'Close Encounters of the Third Kind'. I loved the original 'The Day the Earth Stood Still'. I didn't see the remake. I was bored with 'Arrival', but i enjoyed the ending.

Star Trek Beyond

The first clue that this is a horrible movie is the silly title - "...Beyond"? Beyond what? It turns out to be beyond intelligence, circling back to rank stupidity.

Witnessing motorcycle stunts, Kung Fu and (flying) car chases are not the reasons why one goes to a Star Trek movie.

The plot manages to be both nonsensical and predictable. As usual in bad movies, the villain, a mass murderer, fails to kill the captives for no other reason but to provide the heroes with an opportunity to rescue them. Unlike the Wrath of Khan, Nemesis etc., there is no character development of the antagonist. Without exaggeration, the dialogue is so boring that I would have missed nothing had I turned off the sound. Unlike all the others of the Star Trek movies, it is totally bereft of ideas. Totally witless and brainless.

I wonder if the writers were ordered to do their best to kill the Star Trek franchise. I can't imagine any other motive for this abomination.

You aren't missing anything.
It's like a chimpanzee tracing over a Renoir and calling that a "remake".
More like a piece of crap.

I don't mind remakes when they make sense. I didn't get why they made a remake of 'Point Break'. 'Footloose' never should have been remade. Same thing with 'Total Recall', 'Nightmare on Elm Street' and 'Poltergeist'. Some remakes make sense when they're a considerable improvement over its predecessor. But you should not remake classics. Can you imagine the uproar if great classics such as 'Gone With the Wind' and 'Cassablanca' were remade?

Hamburger Hill

I bought the blu-ray last year and finally got to watching it the other night. I remember critics saying when it came out that it was one of the best Vietnam war movies ever made in its depiction of what it really was to be there. Personally, my favorite Vietnam war movie is 'Platoon' followed by 'The Deer Hunter' and 'Apocalypse Now'. 'Full Metal Jacket' was also pretty good.

Hamburger Hill stars a very young Dylan McDermott. It was one of his first movie roles. He plays the role of the platoon leader. Courtney B. Vance (The People vs OJ Simpson) and Don Cheadle (Hotel Rwanda) also star in the movie in supporting roles. It was directed by John Irvin and based on a true story.

It must have been more enjoyable to watch when it came out. But better war movies have since come out so watching it today won't have the same effect it had back then. That's why it's difficult to rate and recommend this movie now since it would likely deserve more stars and recommendations than i'm willing to give at the present time.

Allied

I enjoyed Allied. I gave it a 7/10 Good DFK and BBBJ but no CIM on the menu.

Seriously, Allied was a well-done and entertaining period piece about intrigue and espionage during WWII in first, Vichy North Africa and later, England. This just misses being a real good movie. I won't spoil it for you but to me there was weak link in the story for me.

IMDB gave it a 7.2. In 1942, an intelligence officer in North Africa encounters a female French Resistance fighter on a deadly mission behind enemy lines. When they reunite in London, their relationship is tested by the pressures of war. The pressures of war is a bit of an understatement

For Rotten Tomatoes 62% of the critics liked it and 70% of the audience liked it. https://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/allied. This is about right.

I like Brad Pitt's period pieces. The Fury is a 10 for me. He was good in this one as well and for a spy move they managed to pack enough action so that you are not bored. Marion Cotillard is also a 8/10 for me but she has one redeeming feature that stands out: Beautiful heavy eyelids that look good in heavy eye shadow and beautiful eyes big round eyes that light up a room. See for yourselves: http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0182839/mediaviewer/rm1652138496

Marion Cotillard plays French Resistance fighter Marianne Beauséjour. Interestingly, Pitt who plays Canadian spy Max Vatan is supposed to pose as Marion's husband from Paris. She told him his French was good but he would never pass as a Parisian. She said he sounded too Quebecois and I think she referred to him affectionately as her Quebecois a few times. Pitt told her he was from Ontario and he wants to go back to Medicine Hat after the war. For a francophone can you detect a Quebecois accent? Just wondering?

Sully. Saw that movie the other day. Fact based drama starring Tom Hanks. It's the story of the 2009 miracle on the Huson river. I liked it, good movie.

Can any francophone verify for me if this is so? See above.

There are several french-canadian accents in Canada, and Quebec does have a few of them. I'm from Ontario and have a different accent than my Quebec cousins. Mine is a mix of french and english and it's due to the fact i live in a mostly anglophone province. French-canadians from New Brunswick have a different accent than mine or Quebecers'. Same thing for Quebecers residing in the Gaspe area (southeastern Quebec). For many years, ladies i'd meet in Montreal told me i had a Lac St-Jean accent, whatever that means. They never imagined anyone west of Quebec could speak french.

But i get what the Cotillard character means when she told the Pitt character sounded more french-canadian than Parisian. Our dialects are totally different. It's comparable to a Texan or New Yorker speaking with a Brit or Aussie. Or with a Brit chatting it up with an Irishman. My best friend has been studying french for nearl a decade and he still has trouble making out what the heck i'm saying when he hears me speaking french. When he wants me to speak to him in french (to practice), he asks me to speak very slow. But half the words i say he doesn't understand since they're anglicized and the french he's studied is the one they speak in France, not in Canada.

I was in Brazil a few months ago and I attended a friends birthday party. One of his friends was a Doctor who spoke English very well and I detected an English accent. He said he spent a year in England at Oxford studying in English and Several months in New Zealand and his best friend in Brazil is from England and was teaching language in Brazil and knocked a girl up. I had guessed that he grew up in England and moved to Brazil at an early age. He spoke English with an British accent. This is so rare.

I was thinking Pitt would of been smelled out right away and shot on sight in reality if one of the loyal Vichy exchanged more than a couple of words with him?
