I'm a huge military history fan.......
I tell you all this because this movie made WWI come back to life for me. For the combatants, the world has not known such terror either before after WWI.

Same here. I'm a history buff & always been. I still have great memories of studying 'The French Revolution' and 'The Russian Revolution' back in high school history class. I also studied "The History of the United States" in grade 13 history & found it fascinating. I've probably watched & bought every great documentary made about WWII. 'The World at War' still ranks among my favorite WWII documentary series. I've seen & purchased many good to great WWII movies. 'Saving Private Ryan' was the icing on the cake for me in terms of 'great' war movies.

A few years ago i began researching WWI and have been hooked since! I have viewed several great documentaries about this awful war. I have also read many books about it & strongly recommend reading "The Guns of August" by Barbara Tuchman. There's been several movies made about WWI but not as many as WWII. One great WWI movie is "All Quiet on the Western Front", which i purchased a year ago but still have yet to see it. I have seen "Paths of Glory" and liked it. But i have a feeling that '1917' will rank among the best WWI movies along with a few others. By the way one very good movie with the war as it's background is "Passchendaele", a Canadian movie which came out about a decade ago or so. It was directed by and stars Paul Gross (The Mounty) and Caroline Dhavernas. "Legends of the Fall" starring Anthony Hopkins, Brad Pitt & Aidan Quinn also ranks among my favorite movies with WWI as its background.

I went to see 1917 this past weekend. I saw it in IMAX, which i always love. I'll be honest & admit that my initial reaction to the movie was that i found it so-so. Usually when i see a great movie (like Dunkirk a couple of years ago) in terms of great moviemaking i end up buying the bluray or in 4K when it comes out. But after 1917 i figured i had seen it once & probably wouldn't feel like seeing it again. However yesterday i changed my mind after reading a few reviews of the movie. Let me explain why:

The best thing about the movie is it's great cinematography. It's extremely realistic, especially when you watch it in IMAX. I also loved the many cameos of great actors in the movie who appear less than a minute each in the entire movie. It was also a very good story and the acting performances from the two main actors were brilliant, especially George Mackay's, whom i also loved in the extremely good movie "Captain Fantastic" which starred Vigo Mortensen. But one thing about the movie that i missed when i saw it a few days ago is that director Sam Mendes shot the movie to look like it was one continuous shot for the entire movie!!! Of course there's a little of CGI involved in order to make it appear this way but i read that many scenes were actually shot for approximately 10 continuous minutes at a time without any breaks or interruptions and the next scenes were spliced together using CGI in order to make it appear into one continuous shot for the entire movie!! That's absolutely brilliant moviemaking and why i now must have to see it again!! I've always been a sucker for great moviemaking & great cinematography and that's where this picture has really got my attention!

Why this movie didn't earn its share of Oscars indicates to me that once again the fix was on.....just like in past years when Harvey Weinstein was still the main player in Hollywood & not in prison. Had Weinstein been behind 1917 i'm 100% certain that it would have won best movie & best movie director. I'm certain of this. But this time it would have been 100% deserved. However, i'm saying this without yet having seen 'Parasite', which i will be seeing either later today or within the coming days since i just received my movie order from Amazon which includes 'Joker', 'Yesterday', 'Ford vs Ferrari', 'Parasite' and 'Midway'.

For myself, the most enjoying movie i've seen this year has to be 'Once Upon a Time in Hollywood'. It's such a good movie! Well made, great storytelling, great acting and the movie that finally convinced me that Quentin Tarentino is indeed a moviemaking genius!

Sometimes those low budget movies wind up being the biggest hits...focus on the story vs special FX.

I agree. Just saying if they reboot the monsters they have to have some more oomph than simple voice effects. Or else it is a ghost story.
Hollow man costed 95MM. Was pretty good and brought in double that

I love these movies about beautiful Russians who are turned into assassians. There have been several over the past few years. I read that they are continuing the John Wick series with A Russian ballerina taking over for John Wick. (Remember the ballet school with the dancers with the strange tattoos?) These movies aren't high quality art, but they are fun.

Knives Out 2019 with Daniel Craig, Chris Evans and more big names.

At a first glance, it looked like an ordinary "Clues" movie, but in fact, I found it EXCELLENT and deserves its high mark on IMDB.

MAFIA INC i really enjoyed

Me too. I loved it better than Irishman because I found violent scenes are more realistic and therefore it’s redefining mob style movie.
It has unique Pods’ «*facture visuelle*». I almost turned vegan after that one. Ha!Ha!

Spectre

I was supposed to go see it the summer it came out. I was having dinner at my favorite Mtl restaurant one day and mentioned to the bartender that once i left this place i was heading to the movie theatre nearby to see "Spectre" since i'm a big James Bond fan. One of the people working the kitchen was sitting next to me and overheard the conversation. He told me not to bother going since i'd be extremely disappointed and added that he didn't like including many people he knew he had spoken to. So silly me i avoided going to see it and went to see something else instead. And once the dvd came out i bought it but never really felt like watching it until a week ago while getting over a bout with the flu.

To my surprise i enjoyed the movie very much. I didn't know it was directed by Sam Mendes, who also directed 1917 among many other good movies. I found the movie a bit long, but loved the story and the many action scenes. The main reason why i watched it was in order to be ready for the next Bond movie coming out soon. However i've since learned that due to the coronavirus it won't come out until next fall. Therefore i'll likely watch SPECTRE again prior to viewing the next Bond movie. I also loved the main Bond girl in the movie, Lea Seydoux. Daniel Craig was once again at the top of his game and the vilains were also very good. Once the movie ended i regretted not watching on the big screen when i had the chance. I should have followed my own instincts.

Ford vs Ferrari

The following day i decided to watch one of the most recent movies i had purchased. I love cars and car racing so i figured i'd probably enjoy this movie since the reviews i had read were fairly positive about it. Well.....I LOVED IT!!!

Matt Damon is great in the role of Caroll Shelby and the same can be said of Chrisitan Bale in the role of racecar driver Kenny Miles. The action was filmed beautifully and this included the cars and the beautiful scenery. I also loved some of the other real-life characters such as Lee Iacocca, Henry Ford II and Enzo Ferrari, among others. I was actually very surprised by the ending. I had to google it afterwards to make sure this was how it actually happened. All in all.....A VERY GOOD, ENJOYABLE AND WELL-MADE MOVIE!

Yesterday

Third day of movie watching so i decide to watch this movie that i recently bought. Being a big Beatles fan i figured i couldn't go wrong and.....I ABSOLUTELY LOVED IT!!!! What an enjoyable movie!!! I loved it so much that i watched it again last night!!!

Directed by Danny Boyle (Slumdog Millionaire) it's about a young struggling musician in England who one day experiences an event which for whatever reason alters reality where the Beatles never existed. Being a big Beatles and needing to boost his musical career he decides to introduce to the world Beatles songs that he takes credit for and he becomes a huge international success! I loved the story, i loved the acting, i loved the music.....I LOVED THE MOVIE!!

I'd recommend to anyone viewing it now to also miss the bonus section on the dvd/bluray. There is one deleted scene in particular that i kept watching over and over again. I couldn't figure out why in hell it was cut out from the movie since it probably would have been my favorite scene in the movie! Then i go to You Tube and that clip is there (from the James Corden show and actress Ana de Armas is one of the guests) and in the comments section people are saying exactly the same thing i did: why did they cut out such a great scene from the movie! And especially considering you have a gorgeous actress like Ana de Armas making a cameo and you cut out her scene??? Mind-boggling!!!

Also in the extras check out the clips from the Apple Studio recordings. What a great singer & performer the main actor is!!

I also loved the movie (and you're right about the clip they cut from the movie- It was great.) Anyone who is a big Beatles fan should watch the short film - Scrambled Eggs, which tells the story of how Paul wrote 'Yesterday". Some have speculated that the creation of that song was the beginning of the end of John's and Paul's writing relationship.
