Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024, now streaming on Hulu)

I watched the Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes last night. I wouldn't say it was a complete waste of time. It was a solid installment although it's not clear to me where this film falls in the ape film universe chronological order. It seems like we could be headed towards a prequel to the original 1968 Planet of the Apes. In the film, which takes place generations after Caesar's death (which is depicted in the beginning of the film), the apes have spread out and are living in isolated clans/villages. Meanwhile humans have been afflicted by a virus that have crippled the vocal cords and language abilities of most (but not all) humans. The apes, who have been unaffected by the virus, have evolved and gotten smarter and developed some weapons, the chief one being a spear like weapon whose head contains a taser like electric charge, that stuns and shocks the victim. The apes see the humans, who are nomads, as "echoes" and "scavengers", so that there is an almost complete role reversal as in the original 1968 Charlton Heston film. As a warlike ape clan begins to conquer other ape clans, a talking human emerges on the scene, who seems to hold the key to understanding the technology that the humans refined and which the apes would like to have. The ending of the film leaves open exactly how far the human technology advanced before the virus, whether the apes will acquire it, and whether both species will be able to live side by side in the future.

The production values of the film are good. There are some scenes where the ape protagonist, Noa, a member of a clan focused on falconry and birds of prey, must acquire an eagle's egg for a coming of age ritual. The way the ape characters move around, swing from tree to tree, and climb up rock orifices are quite well done. It's how you would expect apes to move around if they had the intelligence to do what these film apes have to do.

By the way William H. Macy plays one of the talking humans in the movie, whose role is to read to the leader of the warlike apes, Proximus Caesar, books on the Roman Empire which the apes have discovered. The Macy character is basically an "Uncle Tom" to the apes who believes in the inevitability of ape domination.

There is a scene steal from the original 1968 Planet of the Apes which is not quite the same, but similar, to mark the entrance of a talking human into story, namely this one:

Challengers (2024)

Tennis drama starring Zendaya, Josh O’Connor & Mike Faist. She plays a young tennis phenom who suffers a career-ending injury & becomes a tennis coach. But the real story is her relationship/affairs with two fellow tennis players who also happen to be best friends. It’s a love triangle which causes friction between the two friends & the story goes back and forth over the past decade to show how their lives changed & how it came to their situation in the present day. There is a sex scene involving all three together & the movie was very well made. I had planned to watch up to an hour of the movie & watch the other half on the following day but i ended up watching the whole thing in one viewing since i enjoyed it very much. I give it a 3 out of 5 stars.

Deadpool and Wolverine was surprisingly entertaining.

The marvel formulaic Action and plot is tired and blasse at this point.... but in this case its a vehicle for the great dialouge, characters and has excellent pace..... many memorable lines and scenes

Immaculate (2024)
Horror movie starring Sydney Sweeney & a bunch of italian actors & directed by Michael Mohan. It’s an italian-american production filmed in Italy. It’s been compared to the recent First Omen movie. Sweeney plays a young nun (yes, really) who is transferred to Italy & begins to experience strange happenings among an even spooky bunch of people. I actually enjoyed the movie quite a bit & would see it again. I give it 3 stars out of 5. Be warned that there are many dark scenes which means I’d recommend you watch the movie with all the lights closed. Like you’d be watching it in a movie theatre. The only other actor that i recognized was Simona Tabasco from the most recent White Lotus series but unfortunately she only has a small & brief part in the movie. Now i think i’ll go watch The First Omen to see how it matches up!

The Union on Netflix, Wahlberg and Halle Berry. Decent movie with a few chuckles, no long boring times. BTW, Halle is hot, still a magnificent body IMO.

Immaculate 2024

Last night I watched Immaculate on Hulu, a horror film about a young, naive, but extremely devoted American Nun, who is invited to take her final vows at an Italian convent. The Italian convent turns out to be run by some very sick, demented people who have an abhorrent, insane interpretation of the Bible and Roman Catholic dogma. The Nun is soon plunged into a Holy Hell that is shocking and revolting.

The movie is above average for its genre, while somewhat overdoing it with jump scares and scenes that are designed to shock, revolt and disgust the viewer, of which there are a few, including the final scene. I found the movie to be a cautionary tale on cults and sects which use organized religion as a means to further twisted, sick, perverse and bizarre agendas at the expense of a young and naive people. Our heroine young ingenue is well played by Sydney Sweeney, and we see a transformation of her character as the sordid events of the movie unfold.

The First Omen (2024)

Horror movie starring Nell Tiger Free in the role of a young American nun who moves to Rome in order to work in an orphanage run by the church. Co-stars Bill Nigh & Sonia Braga. The story occurs in 1971 & it’s a prequel to the original The Omen (1976) which starred Gregory Peck & Lee Remick. After watching ‘Immaculate’ two weeks ago it almost seemed like i was watching a different version of a similar script. From what i’ve read this movie version came out first & the similarities to the most recent movie (Immaculate) is a coincidence. Strange both movies came out the same year. I really enjoyed this movie also & it’s difficult for me to say which of the two i preferred. Both movies were both very well made & i’d recommend seeing the other also if you’ve already watched one of the two & liked it.

Le Comte de Monte-Cristo (2024)

I remember watching a movie of the same name back in the 70’s. It was a made-for-tv movie starring popular actor Richard Chamberlain. I had also read a condensed story of the Alexander Dumas novel back in grade school. I loved it! I also remember later viewing an old b&w movie version on Saturday Night at the Movies with the late Elwi Yost on TVO. So the other upon hearing that a new version of the Dumas classic had recently been released i jumped at the chance to see it!

This movie was produced & filmed in France. It’s three hours long but to my surprise it didn’t seem long & i didn’t take a single break during the movie. From what i’ve read during my research of the movie it’s the movie version that is the closest to the novel. I now realize that quite a bit of the novel had been left out of previous movie versions although i’ve yet to watch the mini-series starring Gerard Despardieu which was made a couple of decades ago. The reviews of this new movie version have been extremely favorable. It’s in french with English subtitles. It stars Pierre Niney in the role of Edmond Dantes & his performance has been praised by the critics. Some critics have even said that had this movie been made twenty years ago it very well could have been nominated for a best movie Oscar. I loved it!

Alien: Romulus (2024)

The most recent installment in the Alien series may be the best one yet since ‘Aliens’ came out. I’d recommend seeing it in IMAX or DBOX if available. The story occurs between the Alien & Aliens movies. It stars the actress who portrayed Priscilla Presley in the movie “Prescilla” & who also appears in ‘Civil War’. It’s directed by the same guy who directed Dont Breathe & the recent Texas Chainsaw Massacre. The movie is 2 hours long & i found it very good. It’s also found a lot of success at the box office & reviews have been mostly positive.

I saw The First Omen tonight after watching Immaculate 2 weeks ago. My reaction was the same as Doc's- it's almost the same movie and script with different casts. In fact there are 2 scenes in each movie that are almost identical- one shows the water breaking before the evil Anti-Christ is born. The other scene that is the same in both movies is a Nun committing suicide in the Convent courtyard. The only difference in the scene between the two movies is the particular method of suicide chosen. The one other difference between the movies is the ending and what happens with the Anti-Christ after he is born.

How 2 different movies, both fairly well made, with different casts, are made from essentially the same script and come out in the same year is puzzling to me. It's basically the same story. It really didn't need to be told twice.

Trap (2024)
Last week i decided to go see M. Night Shamalayan’s newest movie. It’s a mystery/thriller that he wrote, directed & produced. He also has his usual cameo in it. To be honest i had mixed feelings about attending this movie. The reviews were mixed & i was planning to go see ‘Longlegs’ instead but i was 5 minutes late into the movie theatre so i decided to skip Longlegs & wait 10 more minutes to see this one instead. And to be honest i’m glad i did since i enjoyed it very much & would possibly see it again.

It stars former heartrob Josh Hartnett whom i had seen for the first time in ‘Pearl Harbour’ and most recently in the great movie ‘Oppenheimer’. He pulled off a very impressive performance portraying a father who takes his daughter to a concert performed by singer/actress Saleka, who also happens to be the director’s daughter. I’m not going to waste the movie’s plot other than to say that the movie keeps you totally focused for the entire 1:45 hrs of it. The movie was shot in Canada & the Rogers Centre in Toronto is very prominent. I recommend!

Doc, Josh Hartnett also has a key role on season 3 of the acclaimed TV series, The Bear. In it, he plays Frank, the fiancee of Richie's ex wife. Because Richie (played by Ebon Moss-Bacharach) is still in love with his ex wife, the scenes between Frank and Richie as they awkwardly attempt to forge a relationship with one another are a key element of season 3. I thought that the one long scene in which Frank asks to speak to Richie privately and makes a genuine effort to define their relationship going forward was an excellent one for both actors. Moss-Bacharach won an Emmy Award for his portrayal of Richie, which was richly deserved in my opinion. Hartnett had a much smaller role in season 3, but I thought he was really good and brought something genuine to the role of a guy who is marrying a woman he knows Richie is still in love with and knows that for the good of the daughter, whom they both care about, they have to have a functional as opposed to dysfunctional relationship.

LONGLEGS (2024)
I watched this horror/crime movie immediately after watching ‘Trap’ and liked it. But it’s a very weird movie so for people who enjoy weird horror movies then you’ll enjoy this one. It stars Lee Harker & Blair Underwood as FBI agents investigating unsolved murders committed by a serial killer over the years. The suspect is known as Longlegs who is played by an unrecognizeable Nicholas Cage in a supporting role. It’s directed by Oz Perkins, who is also an actor. His upcoming movie ‘The Monkey’ is an horror movie I’m anticipating to see. The movie is listed as 1:41 hrs long & get ready for quite an ending! I enjoyed watching the movie very much however i’m not sure i’ll want to see it again. But for lovers of horror/crime movies i do recommend it.

Swimming Pool (2003)
Recently legendary French actor Alain Delon passed away & one of his better known movies titled ‘La Piscine’ suddenly appeared in the tabloids & suddenly available for streaming so i started to research it & it seems like it’s the type of movie that i’d like. I love classic french movies. Then i learned that there was another movie that was made ober thirty years later which often drew comparisons to the Delon movie due to the movies having similar names & similar stories. And to my surprise this recent UK/France production is also available for streaming so i decided last night to watch it.

The movie received very positive reviews when it came out & stars Charlotte Rampling, Ludivine Sagnier & Charles Dance, who played Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. The star of the movie was the young Sagnier girl, a young beauty with an absolutely beautiful body who appeared nude in half of her scenes. She received high praises for her performance & they were well deserved. She steals every scene she’s in. Directed by Francois Ozon it’s a story about a crime novel writer with writer’s block & accepts her publisher’s offer to go & spend time at his villa located in France, where she unexpectedly meets his illegitimate young daughter. The movie is classified as an erotic thriller & received an NC-17 rating at the time of its release. Running time is listed at 103 minutes there is a lot of nudity & sex in it but the entire movie keeps you focused on it. The last 30 minutes of the movie is when the suspense picks up & ends up with a surprising ending which left many viewers confused & having different interpretations at the time. But after researching it once i watched the movie it all made sense & i now consider it to be a movie-making masterpiece. This is the type of movie that isn’t for everyone & i recommend it to serious movie watchers who enjoy the art of moviemaking. Now i absolutely have to watch the Alain Delon/Romy Schneider classic of the same name which was released in 1969 to see how it compares.
