Swimming Pool (2003)
Recently legendary French actor Alain Delon passed away & one of his better known movies titled ‘La Piscine’ suddenly appeared in the tabloids & suddenly available for streaming so i started to research it & it seems like it’s the type of movie that i’d like. I love classic french movies. Then i learned that there was another movie that was made ober thirty years later which often drew comparisons to the Delon movie due to the movies having similar names & similar stories. And to my surprise this recent UK/France production is also available for streaming so i decided last night to watch it.

The movie received very positive reviews when it came out & stars Charlotte Rampling, Ludivine Sagnier & Charles Dance, who played Tywin Lannister in Game of Thrones. The star of the movie was the young Sagnier girl, a young beauty with an absolutely beautiful body who appeared nude in half of her scenes. She received high praises for her performance & they were well deserved. She steals every scene she’s in. Directed by Francois Ozon it’s a story about a crime novel writer with writer’s block & accepts her publisher’s offer to go & spend time at his villa located in France, where she unexpectedly meets his illegitimate young daughter. The movie is classified as an erotic thriller & received an NC-17 rating at the time of its release. Running time is listed at 103 minutes there is a lot of nudity & sex in it but the entire movie keeps you focused on it. The last 30 minutes of the movie is when the suspense picks up & ends up with a surprising ending which left many viewers confused & having different interpretations at the time. But after researching it once i watched the movie it all made sense & i now consider it to be a movie-making masterpiece. This is the type of movie that isn’t for everyone & i recommend it to serious movie watchers who enjoy the art of moviemaking. Now i absolutely have to watch the Alain Delon/Romy Schneider classic of the same name which was released in 1969 to see how it compares.
I've seen this movie many times, it is indeed a pretty sexy film. Is it a remake of the 1969 one or do they both have the same name?
Generally I have mixed feelings about François Ozon but some of his movies are really intriguing

The Three Musketeers (2023)
I waited until i saw the second part of the movie before posting about it. I had seen the first part a few weeks ago (titled The Three Musketeers: D’Artagnan) and absolutely loved it. So i couldn’t wait to see the second part (titled The Three Musketeers: Milady) since i’m a big fan of French classic movies like these. I always watch them in french since i feel it gives the movie more authenticity since the story occurs in France, after all. I’ve always been a big fan of this series in whichever version from the one with Gene Kelly Michael York/Oliver Reed to Charlie Sheen/Kiefer Sutherland to this recent one, which i strongly feel is by far the best version yet! Believe it or not but it’s been 61 years since the last French-made movie about the Three Musketeers! Unreal!

This recent version was produced by the same company who made the recent Count of Monte Cristo movie that is still in theatres which i found absolutely brilliant! It’s directed by Martin Bourboulon and stars Francois Civil, Vincent Cassel, Eva Green & a cast of other popular french actors of today. The performances of the top billed actors i just mentioned are fabulous but this is no surprise considering how highly regarded are Vincent Cassel & fellow french actress Eva Green. The first part lasts 1:20 hrs while the second part is just under two hours long. This is why both movies were released separately figuring audiences may wish to stay away from watching a movie that would have been nearly 3 1;2 hours long. The first part was released early in 2023 while the second part was released late last year. I think i made the best decision by watching it less than a week apart since the first part of the movie was still fresh in my memory.

This Alexander Dumas classic was well worth the wait for a reboot & both Cassel & Green gave Oscar-worthy performances in my opinion. However the fact it’s a European production makes me doubt the movie & its stars will get any Oscar consideration but who knows. The fact it’s a remake also works against them however i found that there’s nothing similar to the previous versions & i highly recommend it if you enjoy watching such classic type of movies especially when they are extremely well made & interesting throughout. There isn’t a dull minute throughout the entire movie! By the way there is a surprise ending which caught me off guard which made me wonder if a third part to the movie will be made later. As for the the actors both movies habe the same cast other than one actor who was replaced: the actor portraying the Duke of Buckinham. I’m not certain why this happened since both movies were filmed at the same time. Great movie!

Oui Big Little Lies c'était super bon!
I’ve seen it several times. Especially the final episode of season 1. Great music! I didn’t bother seeing season 2 because i knew beforehand that J-M Vallee had been against making a second season. He figured there was closure at the end of the first season (the one he directed) and there was no need for a second season. It sounded like he was implying it was a cash grab.

The Last of Sheila (1973)
What a great classic murder mystery classic! I’ve seen it a couple of times over the past few decades & it never ceases to entertain me! I keep seeing new clues that i hadn’t seen before, similar to the other night when i saw Murder On the Orient Express for the third time. So last night i decided to watch it again. If you loved the Knives Out movies you’ll love this one since it started a genre of such type of murder mysteries. At the time it was made it consisted of an all-star cast of James Coburn, Richard Benjamin, Fay Dunaway, Dianne Cannon, Racquel Welch & James Mason. It’s a whodunnit type of murder mystery with flashbacks to scenes that led to the murder. I highly recommend it! It plays on Crave occasionally & it’s available for streaming. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.

Casablanca (1942)

One of the greatest movies ever made! I’ve seen this movie at least once a year over the past 30+ years and every time i’ve seen it i’ve enjoyed it nearly as much as the first time i’ve seen it! It’s one of these old classics that has held up quite well over the years. I watched it again last night when i saw it was playing on Crave & my love for it never gets old! It stars movie legend Humphrey Bogart, newcomer Ingrid Bergman, Paul Henreid, Claude Rains, Peter Lorre & Sydney Greenstreet. It was made right in the middle of WW2 & involves a cast of characters caught up in Casablanca, Morroco during the Nazi occupation of France. The movie has drama, suspense, comedy, great dialogue & it’s a love story. I still tear up to this day whenever i watch the scene where Resistance leader Viktor Laszlo gets everyone in the club to sing La Marseilleise in front of the nazi contingent. Bogart plays the American owner of a local club & the beautiful Ingrid Bergman’s former lover. She unknowingly shows up in his club (Rick’s Cafe Americain) with her fugitive Resistance leader husband Viktor Lazlo. They need Rick Blaine’s (Bogart) to escape Casablanca & the nazis. Blaine is good buddies with the local head of police Captain Renault & their relationship adds to some funny exchanges between the two. Many classic & memorable scenes. A memorable song (As Time Goes By) played by Dooley Wilson who plays piano player ‘Sam’ who relocated to Casablanca with his friend Rick. Bergman portrays Ilsa Lund & this was probably her most famous role in a long film career. The famous movie lines like “Play it again, Sam” & “Here’s looking at you, kid” always amuse me. Just like “of all the gin joints in all the towns in all the world she walks into mine”. What great dialogue, what a great script! It was directed by Michael Curtiz & was originally titled “Everybody Comes to Rick’s”. Had the original title been kept i doubt it would have become the great classic it became & withstood the test of time.

There are flaws in the movie & part of the plot is hard to believe especially when it comes to the Nazis but let’s not forget that it was released in 1942 when people didn’t know how actually evil & a bunch of animals the Nazis were. I’ve always wondered if an alternative ending was ever made. My guess is yes but if so the right ending was chosen since it’s pure perfection. I remember reading that the script had to be re-written several times & that it was a work in progress during filming. If my memory is correct they also replaced the original director after filming had begun. Initially they didn’t feel like casting Bergman in the movie since there was too much of an age difference with Bogart. They didn’t think it would work. Many years ago i remember reading that Bogart was having a lot of problems dealing with a gastric ulcer during filming & was often in great pain which ended up helping him in a very convincing performance. I’ve seen many Humphrey Bogart movies over the years like The Maltese Falcon, The Treasure of Sierra Madre & The Harder They Fall & for myself his performance in this movie is his best one! What a great, great movie! I can’t wait to watch it again!

So I recently watched Godzilla minus one on Netflix. It's somewhat of an homage to the original and actually isn't just some silly monster flic like many of them have been. There is an actual storyline following the main protagonist and some thought provoking commentary on how it was at the end of WW2 in Japan. The lies, propaganda and complete waste by the Japanese leadership at the end of the war. The devastation of that nation and the politics of the time. As much as it was about this fictional monster who rose from the depths and a statement on nuclear proliferation, it was also an insight on the way shame can come close to destroying a person. Of course, they included the classic tale of this nuclear monster destroying Tokyo but the movie had a lot of substance that surprised me. Obviously, not everyone's cup of tea but worth watching, imo.

I also recently watched "The Deliverance" which is a story about demonic possession based on supposed true events. Somewhat disturbing horror flic that although is not on the level of "The Exorcist", is still pretty scary and a decent watch.

The Watchers (2024)
Supernatural horror movie starring Dakota Fanning & directed by Ishana Night Shamalayan, who is one of my favorite directors’ daughter. This movie is her directorial debut & she also wrote the script. The movie didn’t receive many positive reviews but personally i really enjoyed it. Basically it’s about a young American artist living in Ireland who gets stranded in a large forest & ends up in a strange shelter with three other people who are basically captives of a strange species of beings. The movie was produced by M. Night Shamalayan & has a twist ending which i enjoyed. For fans of the produced i’m fairly certain that you’ll enjoy the movie & i applaud Ishana Night Shamalayan’s directing skills in her debut. Strong performance by Fanning & the rest of the cast which includes the lovely Georgina Campbell, whom I discovered previously in one of my favorite episodes of the Black Mirror anthology series. I’ll give the movie 3/5 stars.

One of the best sci movies of all time. Was not expecting it to be so good when I first saw it in theaters. A sequel is supposed to be in development. Excited for it.

On a separate note, Rebel Ridge is pretty solid.
I was very surprised how good it was when i first saw it. This is also the movie where i discovered that Emily Blunt could perform in action movies. And Tom Cruise is so good in that movie. Another thing i remember is that the movie title was changed just before it was released in theatres. I think the movie title is different in some countries. Some believe the movie is called “Live, Die, Repeat” when it’s actually “Edge of Tomorrow”. Not a huge fan of sequels. They very rarely come close to be as good as the first movie but there are exceptions like Godfather II which is as good as the first & the Man with No Name Clint Eastwood trilogy where each sequel is better than the previous movie.

I saw Edge of Tomorrow way back when it first came out on video and it was a pretty good sci-fi/ action with an interesting premise, I just find Tom Cruise to borderline unwatchable. That was one of his better efforts though.
Agree on Rebel Ridge. Just watched it last night and although kind of a formula plot that we've seen a lot, a pretty damn good watch overall. Some solid performances and not the usual dead bodies everywhere.

Edge of Tomorow is one of these "hidden gems" kinda. Well its not hidden as much now but basically it flopped at the box office but got a modern cult classic status over the years and became very popular later. I personally have it in my collection. I got it cheap out of a video store sell. Just looked like a decent action movie so i pick it up, but when i watched it i was surprised how good it was.

Yesterday i got to see Beetlejuice Beetlejuice. Altough not as good or original as the first, it was still an enjoyable watch. I think they just cramed too much into a movie under 2h. Too many subplots. But overall it kept the tone, look and atmosphere of the first and Michael Keaton didn't miss a beat.

I have started my horror marathon in the last couple days, first with The Thing 2011 and yesterday Beetlejuice. I got one more "non-horror movie" to watch because it came out yesterday (Kung Fu Games, as im a huge fan of martial arts flick) and i may get to see The Killer's game in theatre because it seem a lot of fun and as a huge cast of B-action stars including my favorite Scott Adkins, but otherwise ill focuss mostly on horror til mid november. ;)
