Excellent review Johnny! A beefy burger! So back to Presence then
First of all, it is a Steven Soderbergh filck, so if you're not familiar with his work (and you probably are even if you never heard his name), you should check it.
Soderbergh is first and foremost a director of photography, that's what he enjoys and it shows in his movies.
Also this isn't an horror film, if you're expecting "paranormal activity paert 22 1/5" you will be disappointed.
The whole movie is shot in a "camera subjective" way (1st person perspective), so you follow everything through the "ghost" point of view.
As mentioned by @Doc Holliday It's mostly a story about the family that moves in the house and we follow their story, i wouldn't describe them as dysfunctional , let's just say each character have their own challenges and stories, and the movie is mostly about those stories from the ghost perspective.
It's a very short movie (less than 90 minutes) and it works way better this way.
Actors are quite good and the story flows.
Again, It's more of a "tranche de vie" than an horror film, of course things happen during those 90 minutes or there wouldn't be a movie.
is it the best Soderbergh? probably not, but it's very entertaining and it deserves better then the current 6.2 on IMDB.
So watch it and let us know.
I'm not sure if @EagerBeaver is trolling/joking, or is actually being serious lol.I was disappointed in the review, but aggressive would be the wrong word, see my post above yours for my true feelings. It was just a burger served with a clearly insufficient portion of meat, and that's not what we usually get served from Doc. He just needed a reminder is all.
I cant find it online anywhere for free so I am not sure exactly where you guys are watching it or seeing it available. According to JustWatch, it's streaming on AppleTV for $9.99, same on Amazon Video but leaving in 7 days, same on Prime, and same on Fandango. All are offering it for an extra $9.99 rental fee.Or better yet, just WATCH THE MOVIE lol.
Is that the movie with George C. Scott? Surprisingly although i love old movies from the 60’s & 70’s that’s one that I don’t believe i’ve ever seen. I figured that this type of movie hasn’t aged well so the main reason why i’ve avoided it.The Hospital (1971)

I believe that the 52% rating by the fans is somewhat misleading since i don’t believe they fully understood it or appreciate good filmaking of they didn’t rate it higher. Personally i always follow a movie on wikipedia while i’m watching it in order not to miss anything. If i hadn’t done this while watching PRESENCE i would have missed a lot of hints & likely wouldn’t have enjoyed it as much as i did.I'm not sure if @EagerBeaver is trolling/joking, or is actually being serious lol.
Plenty of sources with no spoilers. Or better yet, just WATCH THE MOVIE lol.
I'm a big fan of Soderbergh as well, but heard mixed reviews for Presence. Critics seem to like it (88% on RT), but audiences do not (52% on RT).
I'll probably check it out eventually. And yes, I do appreciate @Doc Holliday's reviews as well.
That's completely fair, but your own review history set a standard that wasn't quite lived up to. I think if the same review had been posted by a relatively new poster, I would have been annoyed but let it pass. In your case however, more was expected based on your review history and portfolio. On the other hand, it's also true that Stephen King has written a couple of crappy books, so I give you a pass as I do he, especially since Johnny has posted the review I was looking for, which wasn't all that long or detailed but checked off the necessary boxes. I think Johnny's review of Presence is what the prototypical movie review in this thread should be.I fimd that the pirpose of this thread os to state which movie you recently watched, write a very brief review of what it’s about, your personal impressions & whether or not you’d recommend it to others withoit divulging too much of the plotline & risk spoiling for others who hadn’t seen a particular movie yet.
Totally agree. i think some people expected some kind of paranormal activity wanabee and that's clearly not what it is, that's why i was curious about it, and of course Soderbergh.52% rating by the fans is somewhat misleading since i don’t believe they fully understood it or appreciate good filmaking
I’ll take this as constructive criticism & a compliment. By the way i wasn’t offended at all & actually found your criticism rather funny. You weren’t wrong into pointing out that it was a rather lame review on my part. I was lazy & on the bright side it got people talking about the movie & some may chose to watch it & judge it for themselves. What i’d do if i were to watch it for the first time would be to read good reliable reviews about it after having seen it. As i mentioned i did this during intervals while watching the movie & also once i had finished watching it. I realized i had missed many small but important things while watching it. Doing this made me appreciate it more & it wouldn’t surprise me if i end up liking it even more when i’ll re- watch it.That's completely fair, but your own review history set a standard that wasn't quite lived up to. On a separate note, I am very appreciative of the stellar contributions to this thread by Doc, Johnny and Charmer in particular, all of whom have helped me make good choices on my entertainment selections. That being said, I am not afraid to call any of you out on a review that I feel falls short of your standards. It's the only time I have even done it, and maybe was based on my expectation reading the review at the time, and/or my mood. Like Jack Kerouac, I am a stream of consciousness poster.
Anora has been released on Hulu (aka Disney Plus in Canada), and is free although probably with ads. I am planning to watch it soon.I have seen the movie Anora 4 times already and it gets better and better every time I watch it. You will Laugh and Cry. We all have fallen in love with our Providers.
I just checked. It’s still not available on Disney+.Anora has been released on Hulu (aka Disney Plus in Canada), and is free although probably with ads. I am planning to watch it soon.
I was listening to Collin Cowherd’s podcast the other day & he mentioned he had just seen it at the movies with his wife & they really liked it. So i plan to see it soon.I enjoyed Black Bag.
Laughed out loud a few times ...
Very slick espionage thriller, well acted & scripted, but with a little too much exposition at just 90 mins ...
