Really? History of Pi? Then they really must have improved the story from the book because ,and it is the rarest thing for me, I was not able to finish reading it because I found it to be one if not the most boring book I've ever read and I read a lot!
I will not take the chance for the movie...

Ted

This movie is about a foul mouthed, pot smoking talking teddy bear with a thick Boston accent, named Ted. He is "thunderbuddies" for life with his childhood owner, played by Mark Wahlberg, until Wahlberg's blossoming romantic relationship with Mila Kunis threatens his relationship with Ted. It's an overall sophomoric, silly film, but there are some creative funny parts, most notably a "fight" scene between Ted and Wahlberg, during which Ted whips Wahlberg' bare ass with a wire hangar. The end of the movie includes a climactic chase up the light tower at Fenway Park by would-be kidnappers of Ted.

Looper (2012): starring Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Bruce Willis.

Premise: In the future, time travel is illegal (therefore, only criminals use time travel)...dead bodies cannot be disposed of easily w/o cops finding out (stupid premise but I like Bruce Willis in sci-fi)....so murder victims are sent backward in time to be killed by "Loopers".....victims are put in a straight-jacket with silver bars hidden inside as payment for the Loopers. Loopers close the loop when they kill their future self. They get their payment in gold instead of silver, live out the good life for 30 years before they get killed by their younger self when sent backward in time.

Future Bruce Willis (old Joe) want to change the past because some bad ass "Rainmaker" decided to close all the Loops and killed his wife whom he is deeply in love with. He wants to kill Rainmaker as a kid before he becomes the badass.

Loopers must close the Loop or else they become the target for assassination.

I was hoping Bruce Willis would say "Yippee Kaiyai Motherf**cker!".

I liked the movie because I like Bruce Willis in sci-fi, esp. time travel (12 Monkeys). As a bonus, we have prostitutes in the future too. Young Joe has a regular prostitute that he sees. Spoiler: Old Joe had to make the hard call in attempting to kill the prostitute's son because he could be the Rainmaker.

It's about Alfred Hitchcock's obsession with Melanie Griffith's mom (Tippi Hedren) and how he ended up ruining her career.

Lincoln: Informative & brilliantly acted. But i found it dull and too long.

Django Unchained: Entertaining movie. Very good acting by DiCaprio, Waltz & Foxx. Unnecessary violent scenes at the end and i found the movie a bit long.

Les Miserables: Very well made. It's a musical. Very good acting on the part of Hugh Jackman and Anne Hathaway, who both sang very well. Russell Crowe's singing wasn't as bad as reported. I thought he actually did a decent job.

Argo: Great movie. Very entertaining. It's a damn shame that Ben Affleck was snubbed by the Oscars. Possibly my favorite movie of the year!

Skyfall: Very good movie. Very good acting by Daniel Craig, who has become my favorite James Bond actor ever! I did find the movie a bit long, though. Even though many have raved about the movie and claiming it's the best Bond movie ever, i still prefer Casino Royale.

Zero Dark Thirty: Very good, informative movie. Very well made. It's a damn shame that director Kathryn Bigelow was also snubbed by the Oscars. Might be my second-favorite movie of the year.

Silver Linings Playbook: I haven't seen it yet. I plan to watch it very soon, though. Jennifer Lawrence might just be my new favorite actress. Loved her in The Hunger Games and Winter's Bone.

Zero Dark Thirty.

I generally approve of movies that use accurate facts when they deal with real life events, and the script here did that. Dramatization is also a positive as long as it isn't over-the-top. The film did have a certain modest level of intensity that kept interest going, but it flat-lined throughout the film, which made it seem very long and become dull except for one moment in the middle.

Maybe the ending should be applauded for keeping it very real, but the conclusion looked like amateurs on a practice course at some points and was disappointing, especially for a subject expected to be so compelling. Jessica Chastain and the cast were good, but the handling of the subject was uninspired.

I rate the movie high on being interesting, only slightly above average for being a successfully entertaining film.

Based on expectations, the documentary was better.

I liked Zero Dark Thirty. I felt it went by fast for the 2 1/2 hours it played. Hard drama and Jessica Chastain really reminded me of an older version of Secret @ GoodGirls lol.

Jack Reacher was really an exciting movie. I don't usually like the big action type deals, like all those super hero movies. I really liked this one. A real fast paced and fun movie.

It might not be for everyone, but I really enjoyed Killing them Softly with Brad Pitt. It was a real gritty character driven piece. I love that style of film. James Gandolfini has an excellent role as a hitman spiralling out of control. He has a good speech about hobbying in the film. Probably my favorite film this year.

Saw Broken City with Crowe and Walberg last week. It was OK, but a little thin on story and character I thought. Crowe acted great, Walberg was Walberg.

Criminally underseen, the recent DREDD was a happy surprise at how much I enjoyed it. This 35-year old, continuously-published British comics character had another kick at the movie can a couple decades ago when Sylvester Stallone played a much watered-down version of the character.

This time they got the tone and the character completely right: heavily dystopic near-future society, highly violent and nigh-merciless, and hardbitten protagonist. Unlike Stallone who felt he had to show his face during the movie, Karl Urban (McCoy from the latest Star Trek) keeps the helmet on, and the clenched chin throughout the movie.

For everyone who loved Paul Verhoeven's ROBOCOP movie, this version of DREDD is squarely in that genre, minus the over-the-top sarcasm.

For anyone who might see the movie then wish to discover more on the character, I heavily recommend you begin with the amazing artist Brian Bolland's volumes ...

Silver Linings Playbook --- good movie , last 20 minutes gets like a TV chick movie though.

Zero Dark Thirty ---very good movie, the only drawback was seeing tony soprano. Gandolfini is a great actor but his tony soprano persona will be with him forever.
he seemed to be the only weak link in the movie.

Skyfall --- its a not very original tired bond movie. it steals from the Hannibel Lechter movies and the recent Batman movies.
Judi Dench was annoyingly bad,maybe on purpose.

Prometheus

Lately I saw 2 science fiction prequels, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, and Prometheus, which were both solid well done films that were not as good as their predecessors. My main problem with Rise of the Planet of the Apes is that there is a ton of ground to cover from where that movie leaves off, to where the original classic with Charlton Heston begins. So much ground that they will have to make at least one other prequel. In fact, they have done so, and it is scheduled for release in 2014.

Prometheus I found to be somewhat predictable, with the highlight of the film being

The abdominal surgery scene, in which nothing is left to the imagination. The main character played by Noomi Rapace is a doctor and she gives herself an emergency C-section with robotic equipment to remove an alien fetus in her womb. Her Doctor boyfriend had been infected with alien cells. After having sex with him and getting impregnated with his alien-tainted sperm, the alien fetus rapidly matured and was detected on an ultrasound examination. This necessitated the emergency C-section to get that alien out of her womb. Since futuristic robotic surgical equipment was used as well as future anesthetics, the scene was semi-plausible, even though she is not very much later seen fighting aliens. I also note that if you have had emergency abdominal surgery and your choices are: (1) fight aliens, or (2) die, survival instincts and adrenaline kick in, and you fight the aliens.

Right after surgery she is seen giving herself a shot (futuristic adrenaline) and swallowing some pills (pain pills of the future). Despite this, she is seen struggling with a lot of pain. She is doubled over in pain at several points after having the surgery. So it is semi-plausible that she can have an emergency C section and kick some alien ass an hour later.

The scene was tough to watch, for anyone who has had abdominal surgery. I kind of saw it coming as I have seen the other movies in this series, but it was still a really a brutal scene to watch.

The best line in the whole movie was when, shortly after the abdominal surgery scene, the Noomi Rapace character suits up to go fight the aliens, and the Android (well played by Michael Fassbinder), seeing her suiting up, says to her: "I didn't think you had it in you.....ooooooops!!!!!! poor choice of words."

Hello all,

I wanted to see Argo before the Academy Awards tonight. It had the same handicap before being made as Lincoln. Being based on a real event, the ending is known. Still, it is a truly RIVETING film for anyone, especially for me since I lived through the episode surrounding it, and had worn my remember the hostages pin forever back then. It's very well written, well-acted, and handled with skill to recreate the tension, fear, and frustration of the time without resorting to silly stereotypes. The look of the participants and yellow ribbons also took me right back in time, adding to the recall of memories and increasing the net effect. The movie had great pace and I spent almost half of the film shifting in my seat from the tension. Still, it wasn't without humor. The audience and I had a number of laughs with the Argofuckyaself project and the characters involved.

Overall, any film that can still make you feel doubt and fear about the outcome despite knowing it has accomplished it's goal very successfully.

I have seen Lincoln, Django Unchained. Zero Dark Thirty, and now Argo. Still, I'd give the nod for the Best Film to Lincoln. There were three superb acting performances despite the added hurdle of living up to very well known American historical icons, each as deserving of an award as the other, and it was also just as dramatic and riveting for me (as a history buff) as any other film.

I have seen Argo, Zero Dark Thirty, Django Unchained and Lincoln and of those 4, Lincoln in my mind is head and shoulders the winner. I did enjoy all 4 of those films. I was most impressed with Lincoln and least impressed by Argo of those 4.

Silver Linings Playbook

I finally forced myself to see this movie two weeks ago & i was left kicking myself for not watching it earlier. It's likely my favorite movie of the year, and i've already watched parts of it 6-7 times already!

Jennifer Lawrence & Bradley Cooper are the two main characters in the movie. Both living in the Philadelphia area, they develop a friendship which appears to be beneficial to the both of them personally, since both are sufferers of various mental disorders.

Robert DeNiro plays the part of Cooper's father, a die-hard fanatical Philadelphia Eagles fan. As the movie moves along, you realize that the Bradley Cooper & Robert DeNiro characters are not that much different from one another.

Chris Tucker has a minor role in the movie & he's hillarious in every scene he's in. I wound up enjoying the indian psychologist who we later discover is also a die-hard Eagles fan, which breaks all stereotypes seen in movies involving a certain class of immigrants.

Bradley Cooper's acting was a revelation to me. I actually forgot he was acting the second he shows up in the movie!

JLaw proved again that she's one of Hollywood's top actresses, and Robert DeNiro's performance was his best in decades, even though i enjoyed him very much in 'Meet the Parents' & 'Analyze This'.

Cooper's Oscar nomination was more than worthy, and i was hoping to see DeNiro snatch the Best Supporting Actor nod that wound up going to the very deserving Christopher Walz (Django Unchained).

I can only imagine how great it would have been for me to be a Philadelphia Eagles fan (or had i lived in Philadelphia) while watching this great little movie.

Did "Silver Linings Playbook" deserve the Best Picture nomination? Easily. Did it deserve to win? Not really. Not with bigger projects such as "Lincoln", "Argo", "Zero Dark Thirty" and "Life of Pi" among the other contenders.

My rating: 4 stars out of 5

Really?? 'Lincoln' nearly put me to sleep, while 'Argo' had me on the edge of my seat for most of the movie. I even would have put 'Zero Dark Thirty' ahead of 'Lincoln'. I was extremely disappointed to learn that "The Dark Knight Rises" wasn't even nominated. In the opinion of many, including myself, it was definitely one of the year's best movies, and a favorite with moviegoers. One of the main reasons why the Academy chose to add more movies to its nominations list was to give exactly these types of movies an opportunity to be nominated. If a great movie such as "The Dark Knight Rises" doesn't even get a bleep, then they might as well revert back to the old format where only 4 movies could be nominated.

I don't know how Argo could keep anyone on the edge of their seat when you know how it is all going to turn out. Ben Affleck also distorted the historical facts by his own admission. New Zealand and UK never told the USA they could not take the 6 stranded US embassy workers. The UK ambassador was said to be livid over the film.
