A couple I have on Netflix that were interesting offbeat films:
Drive (2011) - Stylish and unusual gangster/crime drama starring Ryan Gosling as an auto mechanic who moonlights in 2 different part time endeavors: as a getaway driver for criminals, and in a "straight" job performing dangerous car stunts for movies. This is a movie that I thought I had figured out halfway through, but then the movie changed gears and went in a completely different direction that I was not at all expecting, to be honest. Something of an arty type film like 7 Psychopaths, but this one is not a black comedy. Very good acting by a strong cast of character actors. Albert Brooks as a gangster with charisma and a touch of class is a definite highlight of the cast. Grade: A-
Entrance (2012) - This has to be one of the creepiest films I have seen in a long time, and the manner in which it was filmed made it somewhat unnerving along the lines of Blair Witch Project. It really takes a while to grab you, and you have to be somewhat patient, but it sort of slowly unsettles you and you are compelled to see how things turn out for the girl. The film focuses on an attractive young woman working as a barista in LA, who is seemingly unhappy with her life in the city. It follows her through her mundane daily routine and rituals, and as the story unfolds, the viewer begins to suspect that the woman is either deeply disturbed and paranoid, or else someone is stalking her. The climactic scene of the film, which gives you the answer, is shocking, disturbing and unforgettable. The movie kind of has a B movie/low budget horror film feel to it. Grade: B+, primarily because the film thoroughly unnerved me and I thought that the filmmakers did an extremely effective job in doing that.
