What is the best recent movie you’ve seen.

Hello all,

"Lone survivor" with Mark Wahlberg. I had in mind something like "Shooter", also with Walhberg, and "Behind Enemy Lines" with Owen Wilson. Both of those movies had some fairly predictable but still interesting story lines and were pretty well done. It starts with the tactical mistake of letting captives live, because of course American Black Ops snipers don't shoot (against all training) unarmed Al Qaeda...do they...wink wink wink and leads to them being exposed and being hunted down.

Lone Survivor was far more shallow than the others with 95% of the movie really being nothing more than an old arcade target game with four Americans knocking down and endless stream of Al Qaeda pop-ups until the good guys get whittled down to one.

Only a theme is given, not a story. I really regret spending a penny on this one. I wouldn't even watch it as a last choice diversion on TV.

Korean movie review extravaganza. A few years old (both from 2010) but still in good condition:

Bedevilled. From the corny english title and picture on Netflix I thought it was going to be a run-of-the-mill slasher movie. There is a lot of gory slashing action near the end, but it’s actually a great psychological drama.

It’s set on a remote island with a tiny village of about 10 people. The two main characters are a woman named Bok-nam who is abused and mistreated by her husband and the other villagers, and her childhood friend who came to visit her. She wants her friend to help get herself and her daughter off the island, but her friend is a selfish coward and will not help her. She tries to escape anyway, and when this ends in tragedy she gets revenge on everyone. It's a very hard and sad movie and the murder spree in the last half comes almost as a relief.

The housemaid, another Korean psychological drama. A rich man is not sexually satisfied by his pregnant wife and finds the not-too-bright but quite willing housemaid a more interesting partner. When the wife learns that the housemaid is pregnant, things get ugly. A decent drama with some very sexy scenes.

Just finished watching Grudge Match which was directed by Peter Segal and starred Robert De Niro, Sylvester Stallone, Kim Basinger and Alan Arkin.
The story is about 2 pro boxers whose final and decision match did not push thru because Stallone announced his retirement before the match which both ruined their boxing careers.
Though it is about boxing it also revolves about the importance of family and true sportsmanship.

Last Vegas

Three sixty-something friends take a break from their day-to-day lives to throw a bachelor party in Las Vegas for their last remaining single pal.

It stars Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, Robert DeNiro & Kevin Klein. I watched this movie last night & absolutely loved it!! I'd watch it again!!! :thumb:

American Hustle (2014)

I wouldn't be surprised if this movie won in the best movie category at the upcoming Academy Awards. I also expect awards to go to some members of the cast & quite possibly to the director.

the movie won zero Academy Awards but it was definitely my favorite of the year.
imho Jeremy Renner was miscast and was the only weak link.
the scenes with Christian Bale and Jennifer Lawrence are absolutely brilliant.

Wolf of Wall Street won nothing because its about the slime that actually work on Wall St.
even the mafia has more good qualities than these maggots on Wall St.
the movie went on too long and I was hoping they would all die in the end.

I saw the Liam Neeson new movie NON-STOP tonight,
and it is what you expect it to be .... good 2 hours of suspense if you dont think about it too much, and you do get a true Hollywood ending.
Lupita Nyong'o is in too as a stewardess.
there is one scene where Neeson tries to convince all the passengers to help him, its the only part of the movie that you realize Neeson is better than the script,
but at $20+ million a movie, he will keep making this type of movie. Taken 3 is next.

Philomena (2013)

I was ill yesterday so i spent pretty much the entire day watching movies & tv shows. One of the movies i watched was "Philomena". What got me interested in this movie was while watching the Oscars on Sunday evening, the clip they showed of Judy Dench (best actress nominee) gave me a good idea that i'd like this movie. My hunch wasn't wrong.

Directed by Stephen Frears, it stars Judy Dench & Steve Coogan in the main roles.

When former journalist Martin Sixsmith is dismissed from the Labour Party in disgrace, he is at a loss as to what do. That changes when a young Irish woman approaches him about a story of her mother, Philomena, who had her son taken away when she was a teenage inmate of a Catholic convent. Martin arranges a magazine assignment about her search for him that eventually leads to America. Along the way, Martin and Philomena discover as much about each other as about her son's fate. Furthermore, both find their basic beliefs challenged.

I absolutely loved the movie & I was shocked to learn as the final credits rolled that it was based on a true story & that the Philomena character still lives today.

I highly recommend this movie, and after viewing it I wouldn't have been surprised if Judy Dench would have walked out with the Oscar (instead of the always great Cate Blanchette) on Sunday evening.

I just saw Nymphomaniac Vol. 1 and 2 and it was great.

Dialogue was great throughout the movie, especially the scenes between Charlotte Gainsbourg and Stellan Skarsgård, where the two characters are total opposite.

Gainsbourg is the Nymphomaniac in question and Skarsgård is the total asexual character.

My favourite piece of dialogue is when Gainsbourg tells Stellan Skarsgård:

Gainsbourg - '' I am in doubt wether or not you're even listening''

Skarsgård - ''why do you doubt that?''

Gainsbourg - ''Whenever I told other men about… experiences..episodes of my sex life, it was easy to see they became quite excited''

Skarsgård - '' I got excited''

Gainsbourg - ''Yes about the mathematical crap, not about the story?''

Skarsgård pauses.

Gainsbourg continues : '' What kind of person are you actually?''

Skarsgård pauses and confesses: ''You wouldn't know''

Gainsbourg: ''No but I can guess''

Stellan Skarsgård still pauses.

Gainsboug continues: '' Why didn't I get that burning? The Fact you don't get excited over my dirty stories is because you can't relate to them. You haven't been with a woman?''

Skarsgård hesitates and ..talks: ''That is quite accurate.'' ----- ''

Gainsbourg :'' Are you sorry about that?''

Skarsgård: ''Yeah, out of curiosity not out of lust …. I consider myself ''ASEXUAL'', of course, I experienced with masturbation when I was a teenager, but didn't do much for me… So there is nothing sexual about me ''

Since the Skarsgård character read a lot of books, he had acquired vast knowledge. He connects the stories told with what he has read about, sometimes he gives wither a scientific or a biological explanation about each stories told by Gainsbourg.

Few comments about movies I've seen recently:
12 Years a Slave: C'mon best picture from the Academy, pleeeeeessseeee! I agree with many that say if the word "Slave" was not in the film title it wouldn't have gotten noticed. The camera work was mediocre at best. I will admit that Lupita Nyong'o turned in an outstanding performance and well deserved her awards. Frankly the film could have accomplished so much more with an additional 45 minutes on the clock and better character development. It seemed to be cut down for the ADD among us. Sorry, I give it 3.5 Stars.

The Wolf of Wall Street: Fun film and well worth the $4.99 I paid to see it. Leonardo DiCaprio has gotten quite good at carrying a film. The film reminds me of his earlier role as Frank Abagnale Jr. (Who incidentally I do business with to this day). Supporting case was unremarkable, but it was well shot and moved along at a good pace.

Saving Mr. Banks: Outstanding, simply outstanding. I can't imagine it being done any better. Great character development, plot and sub-plot. So, so, so many really great acting jobs: Hanks, Thompson, Farrell, Wilson. John Lee Hancock takes a step up from "B" Films with this effort. The interpaly between Giamatti and Thompson was just a blast. Surrender yourself to seeing something that just makes you feel good. 4.5 Stars (would have been 5, but no fairy dust).

Ender's Game: Surprisingly good!! Moved along at a very good well timed pace with just the right mix of character development, symbolism and wonderment. Not one of Harrison Ford's better roles. I almost didn't recognize Abigail Breslin, but she turns in a good performance. Special mention to Hailee Steinfeld. She's one to watch and really stands out in this film. This actress has the rare ability to reveal hundreds of different looks (a la Jennifer Lawrence). 4 Stars.

How I live Now: This one is a sleeper. Seemed to gather some award and acclaim overseas but was panned here. Saoirse Ronan, the heroine, really looks different from her press pics. Nonetheless she does a good job. The potential reality of the film set against the English countryside is outstanding. Better than average camerawork really helps this film. 3.75 Stars.

Thor: The Dark World: Much better than the original Thor. Very good all around. Four Stars

Transcendence

I went to watch Transcendence this week. An enjoyble to watch movie. I was waiting for this movie since I saw its trailer back in January. I liked the idea of of being able to upload one's brain data and "consciousness" to a super computer. Unfortunately, the plot developed in a rather lame and predictable way afterwards. The story reminded me of book Daemon by Daniel Saurez

The Babysitters

I just watched that movie the Babysitters (2008) about a girl that starts an escort service. It's about a high school girl that babysits for a family and then ends up having sex with the husband when he is taking her home. She gets a huge tip of 200$. From there is spirals out of control and she starts an escort service with the girls charging 200$ for babysitting and her getting a $40/cut from the $200 (sounds familiar.) Anyway, one of her escorts is doing freelance sessions and stiffing her on her 40$ cut. She sets out to catch the wayward agency girl and catches her with her own father. This ain't no Babysitters Club.

This movie was panned by the civilian critics but I think would be appreciated by many hobbyists. The problem is that the girls are high school age but if you can get past that/other than that it reminds me of the real hobby. In fact the cost and fee structure is so close to Montreal that I am thinking a hobbyist had a hand in writing the script.

The latest Ridddick; kinda similar to Pitch Black in some ways, but not as good. Still, I enjoyed myself.

I also saw the King's Speech from 2010 lately; a very interesting and beautiful movie. Great preformance from the main characters...This is how you win Oscars...Don't expect aliens, explosions and hot chicks though...
Also watched Sideways (2004, not that recent) for probably the 5th time and was once more delighted.

300 Rise of an Empire was ok, action packed, but not as good as the original 300.
