I just received a few reports about Gone Girl. I can't wait to see it.

As for the Wolf of Wall Street...to me that was the best movie of the past several years hat I had seen. I didn't want it to end. I think that Scorsese captured the magic of Good Fellows.

I saw this movie last night. This is James Gandolfini's final performance and he has one of the lead roles in the film. It is a typical stellar performance playing the type of character he has become famous playing.

I really enjoyed the movie. The central character is a mild-mannered bartender at a Brooklyn bar played by English actor Tom Hardy. Hardy does a great job affecting a Brooklyn accent. This mild mannered bartender has a few things that he cherishes in his life, and those things become threatened by a phalanx of hoodlums who are connected to this Brooklyn bar. The movie is about the actions this mild mannered bartender is forced to take to protect what is important to him. Gandolfini plays his older cousin Marv.

Noomi Rapace, who was in the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo, Swedish version (which features a revenge scene In which she uses a strap on dildo to fuck her rapist in the ass) has a nice supporting role as a down on her luck waitress who befriends the Tom Hardy character.

It's an extremely well acted character study, with several scenes of extremely brutal violence. The acting is top-notch. James Gandolfini left us with one of his better performances. Tom Hardy's performance is also terrific.

imho, the script is not so great. Dennis Lehane wrote the script based on his short story.

watching the movie , sadly you cant help but notice how Gandolfini in his final acting job looks like a heart attack waiting to happen at age 51.

Remembrance (2011)

I watched this very good movie on Netflix the other night. It's about a German-Jewish young woman and Polish young man fall in love and escape a concentration camp. As the film prologue notes, it is based on a true story, which was that of Jerzy Bielecki and Cyla Cybulska. The movie begins in the present & flashes back to their time in a Nazi concentration camp and their lives after the escape.

I highly recommend it.

The Conjuring (2013)

Since one of the top box-office movies today (Annabelle) is based on a character from "The Conjuring", i decided to watch this movie before i'd go and see 'Annabelle'.

To my surprise, the movie is based on actual events as told by two famous American paranormal investigators, Ed and Lorraine Warren who work to help a family terrorized by a dark presence in their farmhouse.

For the next two weeks, i'll be watching a lot of scary movies and this movie definitely not disappoint. It's actually one of the top-grossing horror movies in history. I watched the movie at night with the llights turned off & i must say that most of the time the movie scared the shit out of me! I loved it!

Most of the actors are not big-name actors & some i've recognized from previous movies. For example, the actor who portrays the father was one of the main characters in the fantastic mini-series "A Band of Brothers". He played Dick Winters' right-hand man in that series. The actress who portrayed the psychic is probably the movie's biggest name.

I highly recommend this movie to fans of horror movies.

My rating: 4 stars out of 5!!! :thumb:

I reviewed the Conjuring earlier in this thread, I think. I liked it. Lorraine and Ed Warren lived in the area of Connecticut where I grew up and they are legends locally. I think Lorraine is still alive, and consulted on that movie.

Captain America - Winter Soldier

I liked this movie and thought that Chris Evans, Scarlett Johanssen and Samuel L. Jackson all continue to do great jobs with their characters. However I thought Robert Redford was miscast in the movie.

One thing I found a little insulting to my intelligence is that although the Tony Stark and Bruce Banner characters are mentioned at various points during the movie, nobody ever thinks about the possibility of calling them in for help in the battle against Hydra. I get that Marvel can't pay Robert Downey Jr or Mark Ruffalo to appear in every single movie and I also get that Captain America does not get along with Iron Man super well. But Captain America is all about winning and you can't tell me that he wouldn't want Iron Man and Incredible Hulk on his side fighting some souped up Nazis. Yet at no point does anyone even think to call Tony Stark or Bruce Banner and instead Captain America enlists Falcon as his backup fighting these very vicious Neo Nazis. While I appreciate the cultural significance of Falcon as the first black superhero, the truth is he is second rate super hero and a total pussy compared to Iron Man or the Incredible Hulk.

Can someone explain to me why Iron Man and Mr. Hulk didn't even get a call for this job? Did I miss something?

Opinions seem to be shared on that one, but i can confirm i saw John Wick with Keanu Reeves and its awesome. Total old action action bad ass with a 2014 flavor. Must see for fans of action movies.

Venus in Fur

Or "Vénus en fourrure". A movie by Roman Polanski (his most recent movie). I have watched it last night on Netflix. Starring just a couple of actors Mathilde Seigner (Polanski's spouse) and Mathieu Amalric. It depicts a very complex relationship between Vanda Jordan (acting as Wanda von Dunayev) and Thomas Novachek (acting as Leopold von Sacher-Masoch). A relationship where domination, submission, intense love, erotism and weirdness are all mixed up. Definitely, not everybody's cup of tea and I would have not watched a movie featuring just a couple of actors a few years ago. I guess I am getting old. On the other hand, the end was puzzling/disappointing.

FURY. I don't really know why I went to see this movie. I had the feeling it might be...eh. It tries to be like Saving Private Ryan taking focus on a small unit vignette within the grand scale of war, this time with the men of a single tank. The story line was not as good, though the acting was fine. I would have said, give it a C or C+. But the ending was nonsense. For some reason the ending was turned into a video game shoot out...the profit motive I guess. The problem with that is it lost all the credibility that SPR had when it dumped the realism for an arcade experience.

Without giving away the ending, the kind of tank the Americans were using was known by the British as the "Ronson lighter"...named after a device for cigarettes that lit every time, or in this case the tank blew up every time it was hit. This movie tank was totally disabled from moving and the German attackers had cases of Panzerfaust, basically an RPG designed to destroy tanks at a fair distance and made in mass quantities because of it's simple handling and ease of use. Now ask, would you spend many lives against an immobile target or destroy this sitting duck with a huge reputation for exploding with one shot from relative safety. Maybe trying to see any reflection on reality in a real-life movie was my mistake. But turning into a senseless parody was too much.

Yeah maybe I'm too logical in a video game world.

I saw three movies recently: The Vow, Sex Tape and The November Man.

The Vow: It's a movie made in 2012. It stars Rachel McAdams & Channing Tatum. It's somewhat of a 'chick flick'. But i don't find anything wrong with watching a good 'chick flick' once in a while. One of my favorite movies is "The Notebook" and this movie reminded me a bit of that movie. It's about two young lovers who meet and get married, and then their lives are changed forever when a car accident causes her to wake up with amnesia. It's based on a true story. I recommend it! :thumb:

Sex Tape: It was released on dvd recently. It stars Cameron Diaz & it's about a couple who once had fantastic sex, but marriage & kids kind of made it go dry. One night, they decide to make a sex tape with their ipad and guess what, everyone they've given ipads to wind up having the movie on theirs & the couple scramble throughout the movie trying to locate all the ipads that carry the 'evidence'. Rob Lowe also has a supporting role in the movie & once again steals the scenes he's in. Several shots of a nude Cameron Diaz for her fans. She still has a great looking ass! If you like comedies, you may like this movie. I'm not a huge fan of comedies, so i found it so-so.

The November Man: This movie made a lot of money this past summer. It stars Pierce Brosnan as a former CIA agent, brought out of retirement to rescue a former lover, who happens to be spying in Russia & the government there is on to her. It co-stars Olga Kurylenko, as a girl both the CIA and the Russian bad guys are trying to find (and kill). Brosnan spends the movie acting as her protector while at the same time seeking revenge against both the Russian bad guys and the CIA. I really liked this movie and i do recommend it. :thumb:

Fading Gigolo with Woody Allen on Netflix. It was an OK movie, I was expecting more than W. Allen.
