Hush by Deep Purple is a classic, classic tune and is a quintessential staple of the psychedelic/hard rock revolution that was taking place in 1968, and a very appropriate posting here, although it should be noted that Deep Purple was covering a song written by American songwriter Joe South. But they did do something special with it, and I give credit where credit is due and that song may be the best song they ever did, IMHO. That song was released in September 1968, and went to #4 on the Billboard chart and #2 in Canada and remains an all time rock classic.
Earlier that year, however, in April 1968, an American band called the Amboy Dukes, led by their cocky young lead guitarist Ted Nugent, was laying down a track which would also become a classic of the psychedelic/hard rock revolution that was evolving in 1967 and 1968. I put this song in the same genre as "Hush", and Nugent's blistering guitar solo at the 2 minute mark is some of the best work he ever did. If you listen to Nugent's opening guitar lead early in the song, it sounds to me like the band Heart would somewhat copy it around 9 years later with their song "Barracuda":
It should be noted that Nugent's bandmates have had less than kind things to say about him recently, noting his enormous ego and frequently bragging in the 1960s that he was better than Jimi Hendrix. I would not go that far, but Nugent was pretty good and could play.
