What music do you love?

I think the only good album they had after Joshua Tree was Achtung Baby, but I agree that U2 peaked with the Joshua Tree album in 1987 and their career after was largely undistinguished. I remember the top 5 albums of 1987 which were Joshua Tree, Document by REM, the Smiths' Strangeways Here We Come, which was fantastic, Sign of the Times by Prince, and Kick by INXS. One could argue that each of those albums was the best by each of those artists.

Good memory. In 1987 I worked in a record store and those were indeed among the biggest sellers of the year except for maybe the Smiths. None were among my faves though. My 1987 top 5 would be:

2.Girls Girls Girls (Motley Crue)
3.Electric (the Cult)
4. Back For The Attack (Dokken)
5.Hysteria (Def Leppard)
PS Ya I know I left out the Guns N Roses debut so that would be #6.
Yes I had long hair and wore leather jackets and cowboy boots back then.

I just wanted to comment on the Smiths and one of the songs from that album. They are known as the "Kings of Mope Rock" and were an alternative band not really on my radar until 1987. Although "Strangeways Here We Come" wasn't a bestselling album (at least not here- was HUGE in Europe), it made all critics year end best of 1987 lists. That's not why I bought the album. At the time my best friend was the lead singer of a local band which mostly played weddings and local clubs. He had come under the artistic influence of Morrissey and revered Morrissey with God like reverence. At his recommendation I bought the album and played it all summer. It's a genuinely great album and is vastly superior to anything the Smiths did before or after in my opinion. Below is one of the better songs on the album, "Girlfriend in a Coma", this video of which I think well Illustrates the talent of Morrissey. While I don't revere him as much as my friend did, he is a very talented guy and was at his best here:

The only one of those I bought on vinyl back then was the Cult. Whitesnake and Leppard were CDs ( still have my original copies from 87) while Motley, GNR and Dokken were on cassette ( amazingly, I still have my original Dokken tape!). Ironically, the Cult LP wore out faster and got scratched and had to be replaced on Cd while my Dokken cassette still plays properly. Go figure.

I searched the entire thread and there is not a single mention of either Franki Valli or the Four Seasons. Not even from Sene. The State of New Jersey's greatest gift to the international music scene other than Bruce Springsteen (with apologies to Jon Bon Jovi LOL), the "Jersey Boys" had 29 Billboard Top 40 hits- 29! And they were international stars for a very long time. Below are 3 of their best known hits and my personal favorites from these guys, spanning the years 1964 (Rag Doll) to 1976 (December, 1963). Note that Franki Valli was their lead singer but on "December 1963", the lead singer was drummer Gerry Polci with Franki singing the fabulous bridge section and backing vocals:

They performed the very first concert I ever saw, March 1981 in Hartford, which was amazing, before a sold out crowd at the then Hartford Civic Center (16,000). My favorite Grateful Dead song is one that was designated a "national treasure" in 1997 by the United States Library of Congress. It features a legendary guitar lead by Jerry Garcia and tells the real life story of the drug bust on the band's New Orleans hotel lodgings in early 1970 during one of their many long tours:

Great song indeed. In fact the whole AMERICAN BEAUTY album is great.
As for your Four Seasons post...I think the best band to ever come out of New Jersey is Skid Row.
